Photos: How pie-shaped build near Atlantic Station turned out, from high above Josh Green Mon, 03/24/2025 - 15:42 Here’s proof that even oddly shaped lots with active railroad lines as neighbors can become hundreds of new Atlanta homes.

With its unique flatiron design, this infill project by Charleston-based Middle Street Partners—officially christened Westside Union—took shape on a previously vacant, 1.4-acre site just north of Atlantic Station’s Target in the Loring Heights neighborhood.

It was several years in the making and came together where other developments had failed to take off. And it’s an interesting enough case to warrant drone photography for the latest installment of our Aerial Tours series.

The 400 Bishop St. development stands 11 stories on land formerly zoned for heavy industrial uses, next to active Norfolk Southern railroad lines. It started construction in September 2022 and includes 274 units, ranging from one to three-bedroom apartments, according to Middle Street.

The 274-unit building's unique stance along Bishop Street in Loring Heights.

Current rents at Westside Union start at $1,535. That gets a studio in 535 square feet. Elsewhere, the largest and priciest rental option currently listed is a three-bedroom, three-bathroom space in 1,709 square feet that’s going for $4,910 monthly (and up).

Ten weeks of free rent is now being dangled as an incentive.

Several outdoor amenities areas extend from Westside Union’s north and east faces, and units along Bishop Street at ground level function as live-work properties, according to plans approved by the city in 2021.

Westside Union amenities are listed as coworking space, a two-story gym, a club room with a gaming area, and a resort-style pool, among other perks. Skyline views from the rooftop amenity spaces, meanwhile, span across Midtown to downtown and around toward Buckhead.

Other ideas hatched for the 400 Bishop St. site failed to move forward. (Ditto for a pedestrian bridge that would have been built over the adjacent railroad tracks for quicker access between Loring Heights and Atlantic Station.) Plans that emerged in 2019 by another development group, Track West Partners, called for 130,000 square feet of creative offices above retail in a shorter building. Other concepts have called for just 26,000 square feet of offices in four stories, with a “post-COVID-era wellness plan” and emphasis on city views.

The project marks the third for Middle Street in Atlanta, in addition to The Boulevard at Grant Park and the two-tower The Juniper/The Reserve at Juniper development.

Poll: Atlanta's official World Cup '26 poster is here. How's it look? Josh Green Mon, 03/24/2025 - 13:56 The Atlanta-centric poster soon to be seen around the world has officially arrived!

Atlanta World Cup Host Committee leaders and their FIFA partners today revealed a skyline-heavy, surrealist work that aims to capture local landmarks and traditions—and the “unifying power” of soccer, like 15 other posters for host cities next year.

It’s called the Official FIFA World Cup 26™ Atlanta Host City Poster.

The artist—Atlanta-based Jose Hadathy, who moved to the metro from Ecuador as a child—is a Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta graduate who works as creative design manager for Atlanta United today. His poster is one of 16 slated to be rolled out in FIFA-chosen cities over the few weeks.

With a peach meant to represent Southern hospitality as its focal point, the poster puts downtown and Midtown skylines (and MARTA) front and center. Also featured is a leafy depiction of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and city landmarks ranging the Georgia State Capitol to Krog Street Tunnel, the Martin Luther King Jr. Birth Home, a station soccer pitch, and Midtown’s Rainbow Crosswalks.

Hadathy said in today’s announcement the poster was inspired by Atlanta’s culture, history, and “profound connection” to soccer. Starting in June next year, the eight World Cup matches slated for Atlanta “will shine a global spotlight on [the city] and the state of Georgia,” added the artist. “I wanted to create something that captures the energy and excitement of the world’s greatest sporting event, while authentically connecting with locals and inspiring visitors to explore our wonderful city and state.”

Official posters for each North American host city will continue to be unveiled on FIFA’s website through April 17.

As of this writing, three posters had been uncloaked, and Atlanta’s certainly stands out so far.

With the first ATL World Cup match just 447 days away, and in the spirit of competition, it’s time for a reader poll asking your thoughts on how this important piece of Atlanta PR turned out. Have a look at the full high-res poster below, and please take a second to vote beneath that:
