The underlying cause of DeSantis’s staunch opposition is rooted in his belief that the Federal Reserve will exploit CBDCs to advocate an anti-cash, anti-crypto policy. The Florida Governor predicts a future where CBDCs usurp all other forms of legal tender, effectively granting the Fed the power to restrict purchases they deem unfavorable, such as fuel and ammunition.

The controversial issue of CBDCs has taken center stage as the 2024 electoral race intensifies. Many, especially within libertarian sections of the Republican Party, are apprehensive that such currencies might encroach upon the sacrosanct privacy rights of American citizens. There’s a growing chorus arguing that CBDCs could bestow governments with an unprecedented level of control over individual expenditure.

This should not be a bargaining chip.

It should be a flat out NO, we are not going to renew FISA

The bottom line is that not all of us see being controlled as a good thing and replacing currencies with their digital brethren is another tightening of that control. This again reinforces the idea that governments prefer big businesses over many smaller ones because they are easier to regulate and control. The best way to resist the war on cash is to insist on using cash, especially when doing small transactions with local businesses.

Idea: if you mod a community on a lemmy.somewhere you should be able to migrate it to lemmy.elsewhere which would include all post & comment links being forwarded and subbed users having their subscription updated to reflect the new location.

I'm aware this would be a way down the road as user account migration alone is still not great but it would be a great feature for the fediverse to have to avoid centralisation and mod/server admin wars.

Privacy is assaulted in broad daylight and everything we do is recorded with an unforgiving permanence. We trade away our private data for services and conveniences -- not realizing that the government has become party to every agreement we enter into. Due to the 3rd-Party Doctrine, we have no reasonable expectation of privacy in the digital age. The government uses this loophole to purchase data from brokers, completely evading the boundaries established by the 4th amendment.

This invasion into our lives has become completely normalized.

Even if we don't value privacy ourselves, by not standing up for privacy we actually hurt the most vulnerable in society.

Although these precrime programs are popping up all across the country, in small towns and big cities, they are not making us any safer but they are endangering individual freedoms.

A lawsuit against Cisco, accusing the California tech giant of aiding Beijing’s persecution of the spiritual group Falun Gong—which encourages people to live by the universal principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. Cisco allegedly gave the regime U.S. technology and components that allowed it to build a vast surveillance network. Over a dozen adherents, including one U.S. citizen, alleged that the resulting system tracked their Falun Gong-related activities online, leading to their arrest and torture in China.

Inactive Google Account Policy

A Google Account gives you Google-wide access to most Google products, such as Google Ads, Gmail, and YouTube, using the same username and password.

An inactive Google Account is an account that has not been used within a 2-year period. Google reserves the right to delete an inactive Google Account and its activity and data if you are inactive across Google for at least two years.

Google also reserves the right to delete data in a product if you are inactive in that product for at least two years. This is determined based on each product's inactivity policies.

How Google defines activity

A Google Account that is in use is considered active. Activity might include these actions you take when you sign in or while you’re signed in to your Google Account:

• Reading or sending an email
• Using Google Drive
• Watching a YouTube video
• Sharing a photo
• Downloading an app
• Using Google Search
• Using Sign in with Google to sign in to a third-party app or service

Google Account activity is demonstrated by account and not by device. You can take actions on any surface where you’re signed in to your Google Account, for example, on your phone.

If you have more than one Google Account set up on your device, you’ll want to make sure each account is used within a 2-year period.

What happens when your Google Account is inactive

When your Google Account has not been used within a 2-year period, your Google Account, that is then deemed inactive, and all of its content and data may be deleted. Before this happens, Google will give you an opportunity to take an action in your account by:

• Sending email notifications to your Google Account
• Sending notifications to your recovery email, if any exists

Google products reserve the right to delete your data when your account has not been used within that product for a 2-year period.

December 1, 2023 is the earliest a Google Account will be deleted due to this policy.

The heady days when one could log in and expect to exchange ideas with strangers while getting the thrill of new followers, likes, and shares are not coming back. Any newness has been deleted with the “empty trash” button.

When one logs on now, the expectation is mostly for mediocre thinking, jokes, vitriol, and cries for attention.

There are also the ingroups replete with their own rules, languages, and customs. The digital realm can never totally thwart human nature.

Google received subpoenas for private records and emails belonging to two Republican staffers on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) while the HPSCI was investigating the FBI’s misconduct.

“These subpoenas only came to light in 2022 due to Google’s policy of alerting customers five years after law enforcement takes such action,” Jim Jordan wrote. “The timing of these subpoenas raise questions about whether the subpoenas were in retaliation for HPSCI’s oversight of the FBI.”

XRP is NOT a security in and of itself even when offered through a securities transaction.

Ripple selling XRP directly pursuant to contracts was an investment contract, and thus a security. Ripple had fair notice that doing this without registration was illegal. And a jury will be needed to decide whether Ripple execs aided and abetted this unregistered issuance.
