Spoiler warning for all of HK & Silksong.

I am very intrigued by the revelations about lifeblood in Silksong. While in Hollow Knight it was just a boon and something that seemed benevolent, in contrast Silksong showed that it can also be maleficent in excess just like Radiance's infection taking over its host. The lifeseeds in HK were pretty much colourswapped versions (but weren't exactly, so hats off to the commitment of drawing new sprites) of the lightseeds, so the similarity was foreshadowed.

It seems that our little ghost from the first game was indeed suitable to host another god's infection without being influenced by it. It didn't have any problem with plasmification as Hornet does.

But seeing how fast it overtakes the wormways is creepy and also puts Joni the heretic and her exile certainly in a new perspective. The buzzsaw king probably didn't want another infection in his kingdom and I certainly don't blame him any longer for that.

The fascinating part to me is that lifeblood and the connected god seem very parallel to the Radiance and her infection. But instead of wanting to be worshipped, this god seems to hate death itself and wants to make every being live eternally. The regeneration factor on plasmified Zango is showing how strong it can be, even reviving already dead bugs. But as the plasmified worms show, they aren't exactly friendly or peaceful like Joni implied, but rather exactly like the infected bugs, attacking everyone who isn't infected like them.

One thing I only thought about now that I reread the wiki entries to the lifeblood: Hornet doesn't know about the blue substance before, only referring to a similar infection, i.e. the Radiance's orange goo. Meaning that the whole heresy of Joni happened and was dealt with by the king in secrecy or before Hornet was even born. Since the lifeblood room is in the Abyss and I don't think they would have built the birth place around it, my head canon is that the king dealt with it secretly in order to stop the knowledge of another infection able to destroy his kingdom to proliferate. And the lifeblood god made their home then in the abyss, because all the suffering attracted it and also the proximity to the void made it maybe easy to hide.

Now with the knowledge that the lifeblood infection also overtakes its host and is pretty much the same as the Radiance's, it puts the king's handling of Joni's heresy in a bit better light. He was trying to protect the minds of his subjects, giving them conciousness instead of just another hivemind controlling them, be it orange or blue.

I really hope that a possible third Hollow Knight game (as teased by the "to be continued" after the mushroom ending in Silksong) deals with Lifeblood in more detail. I find what is revealed about it for now fascinating and would like to see it more explored. Since the connected god seems rather shy, my feeling is it doesn't exactly want another infection like the Radiance's, but doesn't know any other way and thinks, that this is still better than all the bugs simply dying. But hopefully we will see... in 10 years or so...

Long text, but what are your thoughts about it? did you like the bossfight against plasmified Zango? I found it interesting lorewise, but tiring gameplaywise.

Since the preview of Youtube in the apps often already shows the thumbnail, here is the link to hopefully spoil less people about the endboss

So from what we can find in game, I don't really see why Lace is the favourite child of granny while Phantom was all but banished. I think Phantom is the older sibling, hinted at by the rugged and dirty clothes instead of Laces perfect white attire. So is it just that? Lace is the new favourite toy till the next one would have been made?

Contrasting that are grandmas action in Act 3, they are a strong point that she genuinely cared for Lace. So I find it strange that she just abandoned one child for the other. If she really only cared about ANY of her own children caring for her, as revealed in the dream dialogue, she should have been happy after Phantoms creation, no?

Anyone got some good ideas about that?

Of all the things to put behind the flea games they chose the last needle upgrade? A mask shard I could understand, but the pale oil?

I could really do with that upgrade! A shard I could get on without, but I'm not getting much further without that upgrade.

Damn it!

Mask maker seems to be a job title, as there are now 2 different entities with that name. They are not higher beings, as the one in Silksong refers to Hornet as such and also makes it clear they are different from the mask maker themselves. But it seems long lived, as they know about the weavers and the one in Hallownest also remembers the kingdom before its fall.
The mask seems to force their behaviour, as the bug is behaving very different after knocking the mask off. As they say themselves:

to exist, a face is needed.

While on the one hand that references the way the health of the player is shown in masks and increased by mask shards, it gives also interesting implications.

Does that mean the step to being a bug with consciousness requires a face/mask for those without it? And if so, does the mask partially control the personality? That would fit to what happened to Brumm at the end of the Grimm Troupe DLC. The mask maker says their work is of necessity, so it seems connected. Especially how in act 3 they talk about how to die, a face is needed.

Maybe that was how the pale king also brought his kingdom into being? By bringing the mask maker with him, where before the faceless bugs didn't have higher cognition and were easily enthralled by the Radiance? Because the mask maker in Silksong refers to a contract that still remains and binds them to their work. This of course necessitates some other party that the contract is made with. Some entity of higher power.

Contrary evidence are e.g. the stilkin and burning bugs, who lack a visible mask but still are of high enough intellect to create a civilisation and have language capability. The cutscene after defeating the first sinner, where the weavers masks where shown to be created from a different source is kind of in the middle. It shows that masks can be changed but also shows how the result of that change is definitely a much different entity from before.

So I'm a bit stumped here. The dialogue of the mask maker implies some higher power, but I don't really see clear connections to other lore.

What is your interpretation of this enigmatic individuals?

I find the Wisp Thicket and its denizens interesting, since there are a lot of similarities between them and the Grimm Troupe.

Most noteworthy is of course the flame obsession of both and especially the self immolation. But the Wisp flame is a bit more orange, so its not exactly the same. And the nightmare flame didn`t have any wisp equivalent.

However other things also have parallels: the red cloth both wear are pretty much the same (pointy and same red tone), but the burning bugs are missing any masks. And both have a father obsession.

My headcanon is that the Grimm Troupe passed through Pharloom, but since the kingdom was not rotten enough, they then continued on. Their impact created the burning bugs and these bugs try and get on their level of flame mastery.

Since Brumm showed that the masks seem to have a special influence & connection to the troupe members, that could explain why the burning bugs are missing it. Since they aren't real members and don't have the power of the nightmare heart.

I missed it and needed a guide to even find it. I found the outside of the big bell and tried many things to get passed it, but I didn`t think the greymoor would be the entrance.

But what was your impression of the Wisp Thicket and its inhabitants?
