I 've been slowly building out my smart home towards convenience and energy efficiency.

Right now, I'm using:

• Motion sensors in the hallway

• Smart plugs to automate appliances

• Smart light bulbs and switches

• A smart door camera

• An energy monitor that tracks power use

So I own a small smart tech store so i test a lot of stuff... but this is how i use myself.

What are your favorite smart home devices in 2025? Anything you 'd recommend I try?

For those of you that use Ikea Symfonisk speakers in your smart home for say playing Spotify playlists or TTS announcements, be aware that the partnership with Sonos is ending. Might be worth getting any you need before they go out of stock never to return!

I've been thinking about the concept of a wall mounted tablet and im curious how folks are locking the screen when not at home. Lets say someone does in fact break into your house and on the screen you have your family's location on there what is stopping someone from not seeing this info? On the flip side what do you do if you have someone staying at your house what info do you display to them that isnt as elaborate?

🚨 ConBee III Firmware 0x26550900 is Out – Major ZHA Improvements!

Hey everyone! Just a quick heads-up that a brand new stable firmware update for the ConBee III just dropped — version 0x26550900 (released 2025-04-14) — and it's a must-have, especially if you're using ZHA in Home Assistant.

⚠️ Full disclosure: We are affiliated with dresden elektronik, the makers of ConBee. We’re sharing this to help the community stay current with the latest updates!

✅ What’s Improved?

This firmware focuses heavily on network responsiveness and device compatibility:

  • 🔄 Improved source routing at the firmware level → faster, more reliable communication with distant or sleepy Zigbee devices.
  • 🔧 Reworked joining flow → Better support for a wider range of devices, with fewer failed pairings.
  • 🚀 Boosted performance across the board:
    • Larger APS and UART buffers
    • Improved UART command throughput
    • New watchdog features to ensure reliable communication

📝 TL;DR of the Changelog:

  • Buffers upgraded for smoother data flow (APS + UART)
  • Joining bugs fixed, especially for tricky devices

Location - USA

I want a smart lock that can:

  1. Integrate well with home assistant
  2. Has finger print reader
  3. Supports NFC/ apple key

What are some of your favorite locks?

I really like lockly visage, but lack of home assistant support is turning me off

I wanted to give me experiences so far of Voice PE. Also hoping to see if I'm doing anything wrong of missing anything.

I just don't see how people are able to use this as a replacement for something like Alexa. My biggest issues are:

  • Inability to simply say one single sentence. I have to say the Wake word, then wait, then start speaking. In Alexa, I can just say "Alexa what temperature is it?". Can't do that in Voice PE - which is a big issue in my opinion.

  • Trust that it will hear the wake word. Alexa will hear all of us 95% of the time. Voice PE is about 50% and only if the room is quiet.

  • Getting it to play music through my sonos speaker is near enough impossible. I am using Music Assistant. With Alexa, I can just say "Alexa, Play Coldplay". Trying to get that to work in Voice PE just doesn't work.

  • When playing music on my Sonos, which is next to the Voice PE, the wake word will never get heard as it doesn't lower the volume of the music when it detects someone talking to it, like Alexa will.

I have it hooked up to ChatGPT, which is waaaaay better for some things, but it's slow. I will consider running a local LLM, but am struggling to justify the cost of doing it properly to be able to compete with ChatGPT.

As it stands, there is simply no way I can replace Alexa. This is mainly due to other members of the house (wife and kids) simply can't use Voice PE.

Anyone have any tips?

I finally decided to share one of my personal coding projects publicly for the first time: SubSyncForPlex.

I built it to solve a small but annoying problem I kept running into with Plex. I use Bazarr to automatically download subtitles whenever I add new stuff to my library, but sometimes the timing would still be off. Plex’s built-in subtitle syncing helps a little, but it doesn’t always fix it either.

After getting tired of manually running subsync on my laptop every time my wife spotted out-of-sync subtitles, I built a simple Python service that handles it for me.

SubSyncForPlex:

  • Accepts a webhook request with a Plex media ID
  • Finds the media and matching subtitle files through the Plex API
  • Uses subsync to realign them
  • Can send status updates back to Home Assistant and refresh playback if you're still watching

I run it in Docker and tied it into Home Assistant so I can just tap a button on my dashboard to sync subtitles and reload the stream without getting off the couch.

I put together a blog post that walks through what it does and how to set it up: SubSyncForPlex + Home Assistant - Sync Plex Subtitles and Refresh Playback | ChrisHansen Tech

Would love to hear what you think or if you run into any issues setting it up.
