My ISP is Comcast (1.2 gbps) and I'm using Asus routers. I using an ethernet connection & the Comcast connection is hard wired.

I've noticed that using the VPN cuts my internet speed by half. Can you tell me what your experience is regarding this? I've contacted support and sent them the logs they've asked for. But they didn't respond after I sent them.

I've searched far and wide but I can't seem to find this issue documented anywhere.

My issue is the following: on a fresh restart, I can start Mullvad and use Firefox with no issues. However, if I disconnect and quit Mullvad, then reopen it and reconnect (without restarting my computer), something weird happens. Some sites (like duckduckgo) work just fine; some sites (like gmail) don't load at all and show the http icon in the url bar (slashed lock icon); but the weirdest thing is that most sites (like ookla—but I could name pretty much any site and this would apply) only load the basic HTML without any js or CSS (???). (ETA: Firefox works fine whenever I quit Mullvad.)

Changing servers and/or protocols doesn't fix the issue. Using custom DNS servers doesn't fix the issue. Changing parameters (port, MTU, etc.) doesn't fix the issue. Disabling Firefox extensions doesn't fix the issue. Creating a fresh Firefox profile doesn't fix the issue. Restarting Mullvad and/or Firefox doesn't fix the issue.

I've followed many guides on using Firefox with Mullvad, including trying DoH+https, proxy settings, you name it. Nothing fixes the issue.

Chromium browsers work just fine.

OS: macOS Ventura 13.6.7

Browser: Firefox 127.0.2

VPN: Mullvad 2024.3

Thanks in advance <3

Hello, I’m pretty new to mullvard and my first month is about to expire in 2 days. I just purchased a month of credit about 20 mins ago and it still hasn’t updated. It still says “2 days left” how long does it take to process?

Btw I used a credit card

***UPDATE I’ve restarted my pc and it seemed to fix everything. Shout out Malvad 🔥

Does anyone know if it’s normal that the vpn keeps switching to different servers every few minutes or so. I’m in China and thought it was a safety measure but it keeps happening even with my roaming

(Sorry if this question is kind of dumb btw, I'm pretty new at all this stuff) But if your ISP knows that you're using a VPN and what VPN you're using anyways, what's the point of paying anonymously? Just to make less sources be able to connect your identity to using the VPN? IDK if I'm misunderstanding something about how it works or if this is really obvious lmao

Hello!

If I want to enter Reddit and Mullvad is activated, then it tells me

*You've been blocked by network security.*

And as Mullvad runs from Windows Startup, it means I always have to turn it off, which is annoying as hell.

Anything I can do?

I have tried multiple times to uninstall Mullvad VPN and each time, none of my internet browsers can access the internet from my ethernet port. I can access internet from my wifi connection without the vpn. When I use my ethernet cable, I can access discord, download steam games etc, but using a browser does not connect to the internet.

When I use my wifi connection, everything is normal and I can load web pages. I have factory reset my computer, flushed my dns settings, reinstalled drivers, etc...what settings could have been altered by the vpn that makes the ethernet port talk differently than the WIFI?

Hi everybody. Is there any way to install the Mullvad VPN app on Nvidia Shield without using the Google Play Store? I avoid it like the plague.

Also, has anybody tried using Mullvad VPN with The TVApp.to? Does it work? Thanks!

Hey y'all. Basically what it says on the tin. Mullvad works on my desktop and phone, but as soon as I connect it on my chromebook, I no longer have internet access.

I've done some tentative googling, but it either wasn't relative or too technical for me to understand if it was. I haven't touched any settings, but I checked to ensure the servers I connected to were online and working.

Any ideas would be helpful!

Would be really great to have access to this feature as there are millions of us residing outside and in my case I have limited option left with me when it comes to access Indian websites whether these are for entertainment or for paying out bills of parents back home.

Bridge mode works to bypass my universities WiFi network censorship on my Mac, but it isn’t a feature for iOS. Any custom OpenVPN or WireGuard configuration files I could try? I’ve tried all the Mullvad app settings and one WireGuard configuration file already, no luck.

How does the Mullvad browser work in terms of it's connection to the internet. Does it provide you with different VPN server locations via the browser in addition to the underlying Mullvad connection that I have?

So if my main PC is connected to a Netherlands server will the Mullvad browser be able to connect to another Mullvad connection via the browser which could be a Norwegian server for example meaning the connection involves two separate Mullvad servers?

What does it mean when the Mullvad browser shows that you've connected to a "Proxy Server"? What's the difference between a proxy server and a VPN server from Mullvad?

I love Mullvad. Never had an issue. However, I have noticed for the past couple of weeks there has been a significant slow down. This is on all devices and different network locations.

In the past, if i was connected to mullvad, I couldn’t tell the difference. Now, I immediately notice. Anyone else noticing a slowdown?

What is the best affordable VPN? I'm on the hunt for a cheap VPN and would love to hear your recommendations. I'm not looking for a free option, but rather the best cheap VPN that offers good value for money. I've seen a lot of discussions about affordable VPNs on Reddit, and I’m hoping to get some updated insights for 2024.

Which VPN do you think is the best cheap VPN right now? I'm interested in finding a VPN that's reliable, secure, and doesn't break the bank. What are your top picks for the cheapest VPN that still provides decent service?

I've come across a few names like Surfshark, Private Internet Access (PIA), and CyberGhost, which seem to be popular. But I'd like to know which VPN you think is the best and cheapest, and if there are any other low-cost VPNs worth considering.

Any advice on features to look for or potential drawbacks with these budget-friendly VPNs would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

I can't connect to any UK server, I connect but nothing is going through. Not changed a thing and my router is still connected although I have no data at all and it's using my usual IP address. My account is all paid up. This is happening across all my devices.

Anyone else?

I want the history to persist. Will this mess with the anti fingerprinting?

I tried running it on coveryourtracks, and it didn't show any difference.

Is there any other ways to allow the history to persist?

I've connected my Mullvad VPN to my new Asus Zen router (via Wiregard). But the speed decreases from 550mbps w/o VPN to 220sbps with it. That's pretty substantial speed decline. Any way to address this to get higher speed? Will it make a difference if I use OpenVPN?

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/fourth-infrastructure-audit-completed-by-cure53

We contracted Cure53 with performing a security audit towards our VPN infrastructure between 3rd June 2024 and 14th June 2024, this is our fourth audit in total, second with Cure53.

We asked Cure53 to focus solely on one OpenVPN and one WireGuard server. The scope included paying attention to anything that would impact privacy alongside their regular white-box security testing. Cure53 were given access to both servers, as well as the Ansible code used to deploy them.

For this audit we deployed two VPN servers in our staging environment. Our staging environment is configured identically to production, bar that no customers connect to it, and the servers are virtual on hardware we own.

Cure53 found two issues, with one rated low, and one rated medium. The remainder were rated info. In the days following a debrief with Cure53, these issues were marked as resolved as they had been deployed to our customer-facing production environment. This has been reflected in their report.

Quoting the report

Cure53 concluded the audit by expressing that their “..overall verdict on the current security posture of the assessed items within the scope is very positive. The attention to detail and deliberate application of security concepts clearly indicate that the infrastructure team is highly knowledgeable about, and committed to sound security practices and awareness.“

Read the full audit report on Cure53’s website here.

Report notes and comments

MUL-04-004 WP1/2: LPE for user mullvad-local-checks to root (Low)

Cure53 recommended: aligning file ownership and process ownership, thereby preventing any owner boundaries from being breached.

Mullvad: the file permissions have been tightened, and the owner and group memberships have been changed appropriately.

MUL-04-005 WP1/2: User can hide from check-unauthorized-logins (Medium)

Cure53 recommended: adjusting the username regex to avoid matching substrings.

Mullvad: A change was applied to match exact usernames.

MUL-04-001 WP1/2 Superfluous sudo configuration for nonexistent group (Info)

Cure53 recommended: removing unnecessary sudo rules will fully mitigate this issue. Keeping the number of sudo rules to a minimum helps maintain optimal oversight of systems, particularly security-critical subsystems like sudo configuration.

Mullvad: This leftover configuration was removed.

MUL-04-002 WP1/2 Ansible hardening suggestions (Info)

Cure53 recommended: “It is recommended to remove the Ansible playbooks and roles from the local system, and to ensure they are not cached during deployment.”

Mullvad: We clarified to Cure53 during our debrief session and in writing that our method of using Ansible is not to cache push-based deployments but rather so we can have a system to deal with scaling out our deployments.

The main two issues that it solves for us are deployment time and continuosly asserting configuration state. We have modified the principles that ansible-pull is built on, to use a bespoke per-host configuration, similar to how other pull-based configuration management tools work. This ensures we only have secrets for the host itself, rather than for the entire inventory, which ansible-pull would store.

We accepted the risk during development regarding extra playbooks and roles. When migrating certain configurations on servers we apply a pre-deployment playbook, which runs migration tasks aimed at many server types. This playbook imports the roles associated with all applicable server types, and our ansible-local scripts will transfer all the roles listed in here, whether they are for the server in question or not.

Cure53 concluded their report by stating that they “..attempted to identify any potential methods by which a user's VPN traffic anonymity or integrity could be compromised. No such issues were found, and no vulnerabilities affecting the core product were detected.”

They also praised our security, by stating that “Mullvad's system includes a multitude of hardening features, and this is extremely positive. It also contributes to a robust security posture that mitigates many attack vectors.“

All changes have been applied, verified and deployed to our production servers. We will perform another audit on our VPN infrastructure in 2025.

For the universal right to privacy,

Mullvad

I want to get the service and try it out but when I enter their webpage which includes pricing, it shows 5€ for the year, month and decade? I think its just a monthly payment, like I have to pay every month like a one time deal not like Nord where we can pay monthly. I'm trying to go for a less cheaper option for the time being like paying 5€ since Im low on cash(jobless) and need to get through for the time being. Looking at the reviews its great, worth a try.

So, it goes without saying google chrome is terrible and shouldn't be used anymore

But there's Brave and Vivaldi to consider. Maybe the user might have to download and install it without the chrome webstore but I would get a lot of use out of a mullvad extension that works the same way as the firefox-based one does.

So in the comments of my post a few days ago, someone talked about how rotating the keys too often would eat up a lot of processing power.

I still think the default number of hours it gets rotated should be less than a whole 2 weeks, but maybe I was asking for too much when I was saying the default should be once every 24 hours.

What could the default key rotation rate be lowered to without eating up too much processing power?

If you are connected to Mullvad VPN with a double-hop:

Client => Entry Server => Exit Server => Internet

Then you use the Mullvad browser extension to connect to their proxy. Are you connecting from the exit server to the SOCKS5 proxy server acting like a third-hop?

Device => Entry Server => Exit Server => Proxy Server => Internet

Or directly from your device skipping the VPN connection

Device => Proxy Server => Internet

Do VPNs protect you when connecting to all types of connections? I mean things like HTTP, DNS, FTP, SSH, and SOCKS5 (this is where the question above arises).

What if there is software on your device that uses a connection not passing through your VPN?
