Am I thinking wrong here, pls tell? I don't understand what is exactly this gonna do to improve privacy? A portable version by its nature don't touch and mess with Windows system and remains sneaky while a default direct install is like asking for trouble.

I don't want to cast a doubt but this looks like the team is trying to become mainstream with this method as now Windows will acknowledge the presence of another browser and users can replace the default one and sure, good bravo now that default is Mullvad browser, but just why?

Portable install is all needed and reduces footprint significantly

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/mullvad-browser-135-released-with-letterboxing-improvements-and-new-installation-options

Mullvad Browser 13.5 is now available from the Mullvad Browser download page (https[://]mullvad[.]net/download/browser).

Following the changes introduced to new window sizes in Mullvad Browser 13.0 (https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/mullvad-browser-130-released-with-multilingual-support), this release features welcome design changes to letterboxing, including new options to remember the last used window size and adjust the alignment of the letterbox.

New installation options are available for Windows, Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora. Better integration with these operating systems now allows Mullvad Browser to be set as the default browser.

What's new

Introducing Betterboxing

Letterboxing was introduced in Tor Browser 9.0 to prevent scripts from using the browser window size (more specifically, the inner window or viewport) as a metric to create a unique browser fingerprint. This technique works by standardizing the possible sizes across Mullvad Browser users, making it harder to single out individual users based on this metric.

Although the existing implementation of letterboxing works excellently to protect from fingerprinting, its visual design would often be misinterpreted by new users either as a bug with the browser or rendering issue with the website they're browsing.

Based on user's feedback, the following improvements have been made:

  • The visual design of the letterbox has been subtly polished, so as to avoid distracting you from the content you're actually trying to view.
  • A new letterboxing section, in General Settings, allowing to remember the last known window size and choose whether to align the letterbox to the top or middle of the browser window.
  • Double-clicking within the letterbox margin will snap the window size to the page content.

Now available in our package repositories for Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora

Mullvad Browser is now available through our self-hosted repositories. Supported distributions and installation instructions can be found on our download page (https[://]mullvad[.]net/download/browser/linux).

Each time a new Mullvad Browser release is made, they will be made available in these repositories.

New Windows installer

The Windows installer has been reworked, and by default Mullvad Browser will now be installed and integrated as any other Windows apps.

It is now possible to set it as your default browser!

Note: the previous installation mode, where the whole browser is contained in a single folder, is still available by selecting “Advanced” in the installer. It is now named “standalone installation”.

Browser profile and uninstallation

When you use install Mullvad Browser, a profile containing your preferences and bookmarks is created.

If you use the standalone installation, the profile and the whole browser is contained in the same folder. Deleting this folder will delete your profile at the same time.

If you install Mullvad Browser using the standard Windows installation, on Linux through the packages repositories or in macOS, your profile is created in your operating system's standard location.

This means that when you uninstall Mullvad Browser, your profile will not be deleted.

If you wish to uninstall Mullvad Browser and completely delete your profile, follow these steps:

  • launch Mullvad Browser
  • go to about:profiles
  • write down the root directory and the local directory paths
  • uninstall Mullvad Browser
  • delete the root directories and the local directories
  • empty your trash folder

What's next

Since its release one year ago, Mullvad Browser has been received as one of the most privacy-focused browsers by the privacy community.

Going forward, we want to make it possible for everyone to adopt Mullvad Browser as their default browser, and we will keep pushing the field by showing it is possible to put privacy first.

I'm having trouble setting up Mullvad VPN with my new Asus router. I've tried to follow instructions on how to configure both so they're compatible. The instructions seem complicated and my attempts have failed. Anyone have any ideas how to go about doing this?

According to the changelog for 2024.2:

Security

  • Fix DNS leaks in blocking states or when no valid DNS has been configured due to an underlying OS issue. In these cases a dummy DNS will be set to prevent leaks.

I have tested with the current version and it appears to leak exactly like it did before. So any time a person is on an unreliable connection, it is likely to leak their DNS requests.

Procedure:

Always On VPN enabled.

Block connections with VPN enabled.

  1. Connect to VPN server.
  2. Verify at Mullvad website than VPN is connected and no DNS leaks.
  3. Go to ipleak website and verify no DNS leaks. Leave page open.
  4. Disconnect VPN
  5. Return to ipleak website open page and see that testing has paused due to disconnected.
  6. Reconnect VPN
  7. Return again to ipleak website open page and it will show 4 connections made to your local/ISPs DNS server.

Note I removed all the links as stupid Reddit filters kept blocking my post.

Hi guys, I started to learn Python one year ago,I am not a constant learner because I have other full time job.. so I still consider myself a noob, but time to time I like to build my own projects to brush my skills...

I noticed that Mullvad is lacking a GUI for the Linux version, so I created one.

As you can see the GUI is nothing special, for now there is only one feature, you can choose country, city and server on which you want to connect. But I have in mind to add more things.

I would be glad if you looked at the project and gave your opinion

Since updated to 2024-2, whenever I leave the house and my phone switches to mobile data, the connection is terrible. Basically unusable. Even switching to airplane mode doesn't fix the issue. Only rebooting the phone, makes the connection working properly. But I don't want to reboot every single time. Plus before the update, I never encountered this issue. Are there more people experiencing this?

sorry for not clarifying what I was referring to ws about the servers "owned" by Mullvad and not 'rented', I will create a new question if you want me to but this sums it up ig.

For years I have had to pay another VPN to get fast-ish speeds - they were 6x the price per month.. Then I found these guys, If I may be so blunt Mullvad is totally f****** awesome!

on a 1Gbps uncontended line at any time this is what I get (total max line speed 945Mbps both ways and I just using regular MS Edge (every speed test site gives me similar results)

Mullvad Speed Test

Just can't be beat. I have vouchers on my desk for the next 5 years. I don't think i will ever use anyone else for as long as they are around. Very few people post the good, most post the bad but this is 10000% good!

Hi!

I was about to hire Mullvad.

I'm planning on watching free TV from other countries than mine from my current location in a third world country. That's it, for now, if anything else, nothing heavy like torrenting and such, I don't even have a Netflix subscription and don't plan on having one. "All other things", again, nothing heavy, just torrenting, streaming of movies and TV shows, I can do from my country without any need for a VPN.

I guess I could hire Mullvad connecting through TOR and giving a Tuta Email Address, but, I still would be using my real Bank Card Number. I do not want to mess or have to keep tabs on any PayPals, Bitcoins, Moneros, or *shady* hehe envelopes with cash. So, since I will be using my real Bank Card Number, why the bother with TOR and Tuta and etc and not just register under my real name?

Or should I? Just for watching TV make a real hustle out of the whole thing?

Thanks!

Does Mullvad VPN, Mullvad Browser, and or Ublock Origin protect against possible vulnerabilities on websites with HTTP, barebone or no security? And do the DNS content blockers or IPv6 need to be enabled?

Unfortunately, we moved and I had to switch from a small local fiber company to Comcast Xfinity (disgusting). I had zero issues with Mullvad when using the fiber company. Now, whenever I play a multiplayer game on steam it will work for a few minutes but will always end up disconnecting and reconnecting over and over, killing my matches in the process.

I turned off xfinitys advanced security garbage, so it shouldn’t be causing issues there. Any ideas? No other devices on the xfinity network are having issues, it’s only my desktop using Mullvad that is experiencing this.

My Mullvad settings:

Launch app on startup ✅

Auto-connect ✅

Local network sharing ❌

No DNS content blockers

Enable IPV6 ❌

Kill switch ✅

Lockdown mode ❌

Tunnel protocol: Wireguard

Port: Automatic

Obfuscation: Off

Quantum resistant tunnel: automatic

Enable multihop ❌

IP version: Automatic

MTU default

I'm not very savvy with vpns and I'm hoping somebody can help me answer a few questions about settings.

1.does configuring Quad9 as a custom DNS server do anything to improve my privacy? Is it better to use Mullvad's DNS servers?

  1. Does the Quantum-resistant tunnel do anything to improve security?
  2. I frequently have to connect to an unsecured wifi that blocks VPNs. Does using the UDP-over-TCP obfuscation protocol do anything to harm security? I read that Wireguard has some security flaws and I didn't fully understand what was being detailed.

Original Title: Mullvad says that I'm connected and secure but my real IP address and location is just out here freely visible. What's going on? I have killswitch and lockdown enabled but apparently they do not prevent this.

I am thinking Mullvad now have become more and more popular and thanks to that WG servers became saturated. I learned that Open VPN works better at censorship resistance and also provided more powerful bridge mode penetrating many firewalls.

As much as I love the lower overhead of WG, now I can't use it like before when it comes to using websites normally. This includes Reddit too.

I have a Xfinity WIFI Modem and a BE19000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Router.

Remote connection will work with VPN if connected (WIFI) to the Xfinity Modem but will not connect with BE19000 router

I have done this in mullvad

  • Tred Split Tunnel
  • Tried Local Network Sharing
  • Tried Changing the tunnel Protocall

In the BE19000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Router

  • Turned On UPnP
  • Tried to port forward. (not 100% sure if I did it right)

It will say it connects then not work. Any ideas on why my BE19000 would block this or how I can fix it?

Hello,

I have had a Mullvad VPN for about a year and have recently started using Malwarebytes with the Windows (10) firewall.

According to the connection log, port 53 is always blocked. I've tested it with different browsers and it's the same with all of them.

The blocking also remains active outside the VPN (via split tunneling).

And the strange thing is, I can allow svchost.exe in the firewall, but the effect is = 0 ?!

Does the port have to be blocked or do I have a bigger problem?

Unfortunately I am not a 'specialist' in this topic and am looking for professional help.

Klaus

I've been having the issue where on Android the VPN caps out on 200~300mbit, but won't get any higher. On desktop (LAN) and laptop (WiFi) it's perfect and goes to 900mbit. I tried many different settings and my ProtonVPN has the same issue on Android. Anyone any idea?

For a while I was connecting to Albania servers, and from my understanding it was a country that didn't allow ads on youtube. So like magic poof! No more ads for youtube mobile on my iphone. Lately though its no longer preventing ads. Probably for close to 2 weeks now. Anything I can do through Mullvad to prevent annoying youtube mobile ads?

So I noticed with iVPN, there's a menu in the settings that allows the user to change the rate that the encryption keys are re-generated. I also see a button there that allows the user to re-generate the keys on demand

I did some research and apparently, older versions of Mullvad gave you the option to click a button to re-generate the keys.

I saw that you can use windows terminal to change it to as often as every 24 hours, not CMD or powershell, but the windows terminal. That's all well and good, but having options like that on the GUI would be better and simpler for most users.

Vote in the comments down below, even if you'd never bother changing it from the default value, other people with different threat models might get a lot of use out of a feature that re-generates the quantum resistant keys in wireguard.
