I've tried countless servers. There's always a handful of websites and/or apps that refuse to work or are painfully slow to respond. The most problematic is Instagram — no matter what I do, how many profiles I create or servers I test, it will not work. I used to love Mullvad but it's becoming more and more impractical for daily usage across devices.

If anyone has any input or advice, feel free to share.

im done with Mullvad

with a group of friends we did a test ( 3 person )

we sent some cash to mullvad 2 weeks ago

and we sent some cash to friends with letter and tracking ( malmo , Gothenburg and Stockholm )

All letter arrived after max 1 week and the cash is ok

Only mullvad letter dont arrived at destination and account was not credited for our 3 letters after 2 weeks

So the problem is mullvad , tracking is not allowed , why ? and adress is " mullvad vpn " , so a bad guy can now there is cash and will open the letter

Mullvad accept a lot of payment method but cash is the worst , need to allow tracking ! and change this Fck adress

I'm currently in Vietnam and I've just purchased 1-month MullvadVPN to test.

Here is my scenario

  • Mullvad has no server in Vietnam so the nearest server are located in Singapore and Hongkong.
  • The problem always happens during night time till the next morning.
  • 200-300ms latency from Vietnam to Singapore regardless Wireguard or OpenVPN protocol.
  • 1-2mbps download/upload speed.
  • The problem happens with all Singapore servers.

without any vpn, my night time speed to Singapore servers is always 180mbps :(

Is there anything I can do to get the daytime's speed which normally 160-180mbps?

I've asked this question to several different VPN providers, including mullvad themselves and they refused to answer the question every time.

Like they explicitly declared that they wouldn't answer it for various dumb reasons, but now Mullvad is suggesting that setting a "dns provider" will prevent my location from getting found out through a DNS leak.

Does that mean setting a custom DNS inside mullvad? or does that mean setting a custom DNS inside android's private DNS settings?

If it's the latter that they're talking about, wouldn't that bypass the VPN for some stuff?

Also, what if I just disable "block connections without VPN" and then never disconnect from the VPN and only change locations?

I play Warzone in New Zealand with my friends from Brazil and usually get 330-360ms and I know some VPNs help with that but cant get it to work with Mullvad. Was wondering if anyone would know a bit more?

My friend uses ExitLag but it didnt work for me...

Goal is try to get 250ms I guess or any improvement, if possible.

Does anyone know why a GPG signature is the only way to validate downloads from Mullvad? Would it be possible to add SHA256 and/or SHA512 checksums to the Verifying Signatures page?

Hello, I am a ProtonVPN user, I really like the unlimited plan, with aliases, drive, etc. The problem is that my use of the VPN is 90% in Linux. I have given it many opportunities and I have been very patient. But I can not anymore.

Both applications (CLI, GUI) are a disaster. Memory leaks, hundreds of incomprehensible python scripts, absurd dependencies on widgetsets, keyrings, wallets, gnom(öö)s.

But there is still something but and alarming: Even though ProtonMail is the owner of ip.me, it does not self-check the connection, so even if you get a message "everything is correct, you are correctly connected to x server", you must do manual checks , because many times you are actually browsing with your original IP.

I have 5 Linux machines, only one Arch machine and another Debian after a hell of a hit-and-miss, they work apparently fine. The surprising thing is that the other 3 Debian machines, with exactly the same fresh configuration as the operational Debian machine, although they "connect successfully", browse with the original IP leaked.

The most amazing case I have experienced was a Debian machine that apparently connected correctly, then I realized that the http/https requests sent through chromium were correctly masked, but the requests made from Lynx/Dillo used the original leaked IP.

Note: I always use non-desktop-environment but usually i3wm. Maybe this is the reason of my hell.

For this reason I ask the community what the current status of Mullvad in Linux is like. Thank you.

I remember there was a post where someone mentioned that users do not usually report blocked websites so that Mullvad can possibly fix it. Is there a special link where this can be done?

I got this weird issue.

First time it is happening and I'm using Mullvad for more than a year.

Both devices are connected on the same router at my place.

MullvadVPN is enabled on my first device (an Android phone), and I'm browsing stuff online.

Second device (also a phone) is not connected to Mullvad or any VPN , run a search on Google and get the 'Unusal traffic' error with the CAPTCHA while running a google search, and the IP flagged by Google is my own public IP assigned by my ISP.

Disabling wifi on the second phone instantly solve the issue and after reconnecting back to wifi later the error is not there anymore.

I'm still wondering how it is possible? Does it means somehow my public IP as leaked and Google detected something?

I have found that the server speeds vary dramatically and it's very hit and miss if you find a good server or not. Is there anywhere you can find a list of server speeds or server ranking or anything like that.

Alternatively, if this doesn't exist, please share your favorite Mullvad servers to use if you don't mind. Thanks.

(I'm based in Asia if that matters).

Hi, I apologise for the nature of the question but I cannot see anywhere the technical explanation of casting and I would like to understand.

Imagine this, a pc with jellyfin server and mullvad vpn active......result = cannot cast to another device in this case a raspberry pi 5 with kodi (it doesn't even identify nothing to cast). But if the vpn is disconnected he can cast with no issues.

I do not have https or remote access to the server enabled on Jellyfin so I think this way it only runs on my private network.

The question is do we need vpn when casting from a pc to another device to protect our privacy or there is no need...technically can anybody explaining me how the packages are delivered. Thank you

Hi - This just started happening to me a couple of days ago.

When I enable Mullvad on my PC, my download speeds are fine, but my upload speeds are very, very slow - just a few kilobytes per second. The same issue occurs regardless of OS - I tried running an internet speed test in Windows and also Ubuntu, and the fast download/slow upload speeds were basically the same.

When I disable Mullvad, my upload speeds returned to normal.

What could be causing this?

So I would like to ask you some questions about VPN and security

  1. Is it beneficial to employ two layers of VPN protection, one on my computer and another within a virtual machine using VirtualBox or something similar, to enhance security?
  2. Does running a VPN within a virtual machine add an extra level of privacy and security compared to just using a VPN on the host machine?
  3. What are the potential risks or benefits of using a VPN on both my computer and within a virtual machine simultaneously?
  4. Will using a VPN within a virtual machine offer any additional protection against surveillance or data breaches?
  5. Can running a VPN within a virtual machine using VirtualBox or something similar help mitigate any vulnerabilities or weaknesses present in the VPN software on the host machine?

This is the first time I've used a VPN and I've never dealt with WiFi disconnection happening as badly as this. Mullvad completely made it impossible for me to reconnect to WiFi after I closed the program which prompted me to restart my computer. After restarting it and without Mullvad loading at startup, the application somehow was still affecting my WiFi as I moused over and saw "Mullvad" above "Internet Access" and in my Task Manager. The WiFi kept connecting and disconnecting over and over again until I uninstalled the application. What is going on here?

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/dns-traffic-can-leak-outside-the-vpn-tunnel-on-android

We were recently made aware of multiple potential DNS leaks on Android. They stem from bugs in Android itself, and only affect certain apps.

On Monday 22 of April we became aware of a user report on Reddit of a DNS leak. The report detailed how the user managed to leak DNS queries when disabling and enabling VPN while having “Block connections without VPN” on. We immediately started an internal investigation that could confirm the issue. The investigation also led to more findings of scenarios that can cause DNS leaks on Android.

Findings

Identified scenarios where the Android OS can leak DNS traffic:

  • If a VPN is active without any DNS server configured.
  • For a short period of time while a VPN app is re-configuring the tunnel or is being force stopped/crashes.

The leaks seem to be limited to direct calls to the C function getaddrinfo. Apps that use this way to resolve domain names cause leaks in the scenarios listed above. We have not found any leaks from apps that only use Android API:s such as DnsResolver. The Chrome browser is an example of an app that can use getaddrinfo directly.

The above applies regardless of whether Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN is enabled or not, which is not expected OS behavior and should therefore be fixed upstream in the OS.

We’ve been able to confirm that these leaks occur in multiple versions of Android, including the latest version (Android 14).

Improvements

Our app currently does not set any DNS server in its blocking state. When our app fails to set up a tunnel in a way that is not recoverable, it enters the blocking state. In this state it stops traffic from leaving the device. However, it does not set any DNS server in this state, and as a result the above described DNS leaks can happen. We will work around the OS bug by setting a bogus DNS server for now. You can expect a release with this fix soon.

The leak during tunnel reconnects is harder for us to mitigate in our app. We are still looking for solutions. We can potentially minimize the amount of times a tunnel re-configuration happens, but we currently don’t think this leak can be fully prevented.

It should be made clear that these workarounds should not be needed in any VPN app. Nor is it wrong for an app to use getaddrinfo to resolve domain names. Instead, these issues should be addressed in the OS in order to protect all Android users regardless of which apps they use.

We have reported the issues and suggested improvements to Google and hope that they will address this quickly.

Steps to reproduce

The following steps reproduce the second scenario above, where a VPN user changes the tunnel configuration, e.g. switching to another server or changing DNS server.

Here we use the WireGuard app since it has become a reference Android VPN implementation. It should be noted that the leaks can probably be reproduced with any other Android VPN app also. We use Chrome to trigger the leaks since it is one of the apps we have confirmed uses getaddrinfo.

  1. Download spam_get_requests.html (https[://]mullvad[.]net/media/uploads/2024/05/03/spam_get_requests.html)
  2. Install the WireGuard app & Chrome
  3. Import wg1.conf (https[://]mullvad[.]net/media/uploads/2024/05/03/wg1.conf), wg2.conf (https[://]mullvad[.]net/media/uploads/2024/05/03/wg2.conf) into WireGuard
  4. Enable the wg1 tunnel in the WireGuard app and allow the VPN permission
  5. In Android VPN Settings enable “Always-on VPN” & “Block connections without VPN” for WireGuard
  6. Start capturing data on your router by using e.g tcpdump $ tcpdump -i <INTERFACE> host <IP of android device>
  7. Split the screen to show both WireGuard & Chrome side by side
  8. Open spam_get_requests.html with Chrome & press “Start”
  9. Toggle back and fourth between wg1 and wg2 in the WireGuard app until you see the leaks in the next step.
  10. Observe DNS traffic similar to this on the router:
11:50:27.816359 IP Pixel-Tablet.lan.53353 > OpenWrt.lan.53: 11200+ A? 307lf5rgn6-19282-11-50-27-519z.mullvad.test.lan. (65) 11:50:27.816359 IP Pixel-Tablet.lan.48267 > OpenWrt.lan.53: 44347+ A? 307lf5rgn6-19284-11-50-27-579z.mullvad.test.lan. (65) 11:50:27.816396 IP Pixel-Tablet.lan.16747 > OpenWrt.lan.53: 44584+ A? 307lf5rgn6-19289-11-50-27-729z.mullvad.test. (61) 11:50:27.816458 IP OpenWrt.lan.53 > Pixel-Tablet.lan.53353: 11200 NXDomain 0/0/0 (65) 11:50:27.816476 IP Pixel-Tablet.lan.45727 > OpenWrt.lan.53: 40503+ A? 307lf5rgn6-19290-11-50-27-759z.mullvad.test. (61) 11:50:27.816542 IP OpenWrt.lan.53 > Pixel-Tablet.lan.48267: 44347 NXDomain 0/0/0 (65) 11:50:27.816588 IP Pixel-Tablet.lan.43821 > OpenWrt.lan.53: 36295+ A? 307lf5rgn6-19291-11-50-27-789z.mullvad.test. (61) 11:50:27.816625 IP OpenWrt.lan.53 > Pixel-Tablet.lan.16747: 44584 NXDomain 0/0/0 (61)

Since “Block connections without VPN” was active, nothing except encrypted WireGuard traffic should have left the device, but here we see plaintext DNS leaving the device.

Conclusions and recommendations

DNS leaks may have serious privacy implications for users, and can be used to derive users' approximate location or find out what websites and services a user uses.

These finding also shows once again that “Block connections without VPN” does not live up to its name (or documentation) and that it has multiple flaws. Apps may still leak DNS traffic during the conditions mentioned above, and as previously reported (https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/android-leaks-connectivity-check-traffic) it still leaks connection check traffic.

Depending on your threat model this might mean that you should avoid using Android altogether for anything sensitive, or employ other mitigations to prevent the leaks. We aim to partially mitigate these problems in our app, so make sure to keep the app up-to-date.

Hi,

not sure about the "legal" side of this, but I presume using the same key for 2 apps would be ok in this scenario as there is no possible way both systems would be up at once, it's either linux or w11, but thought I'd ask to be sure.

Thanks for any advice!

Hi, when Netflix removed the feature for multiple people to use the same account from different locations, it always seemed to work for me when Mullvad was on. But for the past week, on my chromecast tv, netflix isn't working even when the vpn is on.

Any ideas?
