Just an appreciation post to say thanks to all the work being done by Colin, George and the NF devs team behind the scenes. They work tirelessly thinking about ways to improve and advocate for nano - and they're out there advocating in the real world. Thanks on behalf of the nano community!

On a per transaction basis, Nano is "orders of magnitude" more energy effiecient. You can see Nano's daily stats here:

When I send 1 Nano from account A to account B, a block hash is generated. Can this block hash be manipulated? Can it be pre-processed to, let’s say, end with a certain character? Follow up question, where (sender? Rep? Node? Receiver?) is this hash calculated and how?

Hey Nano Enthusiasts,

Great news! 🎉 We're embarking on an exciting experiment!

Dimitrios is rejoining us as protocol developer and pace-setter, made possible by an initial community fund we've raised.

With Dimitrios on board for the coming months, we are all set

  • to accelerate our development efforts ⚡
  • to improve the response times for contributions made by our C++ community developers. 👩‍💻👨‍💻

The spotlight is ours to highlight the incredible progress that our amazing community can achieve together. 🌟Let's learn as much as we can from this collective effort and showcase the influence of our united collaboration.

The initial funds are in place. To keep this experiment thriving, we need the ongoing community support. It's our continued participation that ensures the success over the long haul.

Dimitrios will be diving into our weekly dev space, sharing progress reports and discussing all nano things. His main role will be to review pull requests from core and community developers, assure a high code quality and reduce the work in progress.

Payouts are happening weekly, in sync with the dev space, at a rate of ~750Ӿ per working day at the current rate. This means anyone can follow the progress and decide if the journey is worth their contribution.

Let's prove there's a sustainable way to fund developers, one that doesn't involve messing with the supply. We've all been talking about community-funded developers for a long time, and now is our chance to make it last.

Let's craft a fresh path together!

Cheers to the adventure ahead!

How can I help ?

  • Donate 🙂 The fund is 100% community driven
  • Get active in C++ development and create pull requests to improve the node

Has anyone in US have any success in trying to collect? I sent an email over the weekend to see if the Italian contacts can get me in the loop.

It wasn't really out of negligence. I only got an email once from them, and it was filtered out. I had no idea we could actually get our money back.

I didn't have that much but traded my Nano for LTC before the hack went down so about 3 litecoins.

We originally had these for the giveaway, but since our auto-reply got killed by Reddit we unfortunately couldn't reply with them all. I think they're fun to share here anyway, so enjoy!

  • It takes ~133ms to circle the Earth at lightspeed. Nano transactions are fully confirmed in ~426ms.
  • Someone once created a spot on WeNano (a location-based faucet) that paid out $50 in Nano.. on an island in the middle of a lake. A few people canoed out to get it!
  • All Nano was given away for free via faucets. Faucets still exist today, but pay out far less than those original faucets did! There's a list of faucets here.
  • Nano used to be called RaiBlocks, after the Rai stones used as currency on the Micronesian Island of Yap.
  • The Twitter/X AI (Grok) seems to be very fond of Nano, so much so that Nano Twitter enthusiasts have set up the #GrokChoosesXNO tag.
  • Nano is extremely divisible, up to 30 decimals. This means that you could run the entire world economy and have everyone able to do microtransactions on just 1 Nano. The total supply is 133248297920938463463374607431768211455 raw!
  • The original faucets that Nano was distributed from (for free, to anyone) featured a paywall. If you paid 1000 Nano, you would get... a picture of a panda.
  • There is a conspiracy theory posted on Reddit that Colin LeMahieu (who started Nano) is Satoshi Nakamoto.
  • We've done a similar giveaway in the past, doing over 20k transactions while paying a total of $0 in fees!
  • Nano has an original design and is one of a small number of crypto that is not derived from or based on Bitcoin or Ethereum.
  • Nano is one of the few cryptocurrencies that is fully distributed. There is 0% inflation, no additional Nano can ever be created.
  • New versions of the Nano node software are generally named after ancient coins (Lydia, Daric, Follis).
  • Nano is extremely energy-efficient. 15 million Nano transactions use about as much electricity as one Bitcoin transaction.
  • The first-ever crypto transaction inside the British Houses of Parliament was done using Nano, during the launch of the Centre of Fintech.
  • Nano has been flying with the International Space Station on a WeNano spot. People can collect small amounts of Nano when the ISS overflies their location!
  • ISO standards dictate that supranational currencies must start with an X. Hence Nano's ticker being XNO and its currency symbol being Ӿ.
  • Nano has its own NFTs in NyanoCats.
  • NanoBrowserQuest is a MMORPG that uses Nano as its currency. You can try it out for free, and even get some Nano for beating the final boss!
  • It takes about 15 seconds between posting your reply and receiving Nano. 14 of those seconds are Reddit processing your comment and making it available via API!
  • The Nano community sponsors a Nigerian youth football team called Fc Espada, also known as the SwordBoys.
  • Perseeve is a streaming app that uses Nano. You can set up a stream and decide how much it will cost people to watch you per second!
  • The Nano Foundation is a completely unpaid, volunteer organisation dedicated to the development of Nano. We're very grateful to them.
  • There is a Nano around the globe video where community members transfer a single Nano across 11 countries in 6 continents in under a minute.
  • Nano's initial distribution was done through free faucets. These got so popular that they captured a significant amount of total captcha traffic after which Google reached out to Colin LeMahieu!
  • Nano is pseudo-anonymous like Bitcoin and Ethereum, but has privacy solutions like Nanonymous that allow you to obfuscate funds.
  • Nano's node software is written in C++, but a developer is currently also porting it to Rust. He does coding livestreams where you can follow along!
  • The Nano developers host weekly developer Spaces on Twitter where anyone can join in. Transcripts and summaries are posted on r/nanocurrency by community members.
  • It's possible to earn Nano by mining Monero. Nanswap uses your computer's CPU to mine, auto-converts to Nano, then pays out after just a few seconds.
  • PlayNano Earn lets you do small tasks and surveys while being paid out in Nano.
  • Nano.to offers cloud wallets. These allow you to start sending Nano programmatically with just a few lines of code!
  • Nano has no inbuilt limits. Its throughput is dependent on the hardware and bandwidth of the nodes running the network. If they get stronger, the network's throughput increases.
  • Cake Wallet not only allows you to buy Nano in the app, but is integrated to Twitter. Pin your nano address in a tweet, and people can send to your username on Cake Wallet!
  • Nano is one of very few crypto where there is no 'dust'. Even if you have 0.00000000000000001 Nano, you will always still be able to move it due to Nano being feeless.
  • It's recently become possible to add the Nano Ӿ symbol (its currency symbol) into AI generated images!
  • Nano's V26 version will soon be released, which should increase throughput even more, make bootstrapping faster, and make Nano even more spam resistant.
  • Redeemfor.me is a website that lets you swap Nano for gift cards. Payments are completely feeless!.
  • Diva's Kitchen, a Nigerian catering service, started accepting Nano payments. Seeing some success, they hosted a fundraiser and fed over 300 people in Ibadan in Nigeria!
  • Nano confirms transactions asynchronously. In Nano's block-lattice architecture, each account has its own blockchain. This allows for parallel processing, where user A does not have to wait for user B's transaction to confirm!
  • Nano's consensus mechanism is called Open Representative Voting. In contrast to adversarial consensus mechanisms like Proof of Work and Proof of Stake where nodes compete over the next block, in ORV nodes cooperate to vote on valid transactions.
  • This giveaway is completely community-sourced. The Nano community came up with the idea, successfully raised funds, and built a bot to do this giveaway!
  • The anti-spam mechanism in Nano is the 'bucketing system'. Nodes put transactions in buckets based on account balance and prioritises by how long ago the account did their previous transaction.
  • Each user can vote for a Representative (or run one themselves) who checks and confirms transactions. Users have an incentive to choose representatives with low voting weight, to increase decentralization.
  • The incentives to run a Nano node are similar to running a non-mining Bitcoin node. Nano has no monetary incentives to run a node since there are 0 fees and 0% supply inflation. This increases decentralization of the network.
  • The vegetable mascot of Nano is broccoli. A user in r/nanotrade once tried to start a reply chain to spell B-U-L-L-I-S-H, but it turned into B-R-O-C-C-O-L-I-S-H. The meme stuck, and the community adopted the broccoli as its very own.
  • There is a WeNano spot that pays out Nano at every university in the world (~9000 universities) so that every student can try Nano. Since being launched, WeNano has paid out over 40,000 Nano!

After the recent giveaway in the CC sub, it's probably a good idea to remind every Nano holder about the importance of self custody and also of delegating the voting weight their nano carries to a good representative in the network, to help further decentralize it.

Why is self-custody important? The "not your keys, not your crypto" phrase can't be repeated enough. If you hold your hard earned nano in an exchange, you will lose it if the exchange gets hacked, shutdown, etc.

Withdraw your nano to a wallet ensuring you (and only you) get and retain access to the seed phrase you are given during the setup.

There is a list of wallets that support nano here:

Now that your nano is in your custody, the next step is to select a good representative.

What is a good representative and how do I find it? A good representative is typically one that:

  • Is ran by a known, trusted member of the community.
  • Has had little/no downtime in the last few weeks/months
  • Is updated to the latest version (Now V 25.1.0)
  • Currently holds less than 1% of the voting weight.

You can explore the network's representatives here:

If you don't have the time, here are a few representatives that fulfill the criteria above:

  • Nano Germany: nano_34zuxqdsucurhjrmpc4aixzbgaa4wjzz6bn5ryn56emc9tmd3pnxjoxfzyb6
  • Flying Amigos: nano_1xckpezrhg56nuokqh6t1stjca67h37jmrp9qnejjkfgimx1msm9ehuaieuq
  • Nanovert: nano_375pi67f4i4ag5rudoziza86z715bepsmp1r6ri4domt7ct6tk67mjsxtebm

If you are holding your nano in Natrium and have never changed your representative, it would be specially helpful if you change it because the Natrium rep (which is set up by default) currently holds over 7% of the voting weight, which is way above the recommended 1%.

More info on how to change your representative in Natrium here:

These are very simple but important steps you can take to contribute to improve the network!

EDIT: Typo

As far as i understand, people do a small pow in order to send a nano transaction. This is next to nothing, but for users who spam the network it can get a lot. What if this pow becomes somehow a incentive for nodes? Instead of requiring energy wasted to nothing, a currency like xmr or whatever is mined, then converted into nano and send to nodes? From there, we could distribute it to nodes who have higher bandwidth and/or uptime etc.

Just some wild thoughts, but could maybe improve the network.

The difficult part is how to utilise the small energy usage per transaction towards nodes.

I mean, it may seem like a trivial statement but it actually is useful.

I use free GPT models to understand better what's taught in university and sometimes I deal with problems that are way too much for gpt3/bing(4)/bard like advanced integer linear programming.

Today I had to deal with quite an intricate problem I couldn't solve completely and instead of paying for a whole month I used Nano gpt for chatgpt 4. I sent a little amount (0.5 Nano), queried the model multiple times and then withdrew instantly what remained without paying a single fraction of a penny for transactions.

So yeah, it may seem obvious but darn, it actually is useful and efficient.

Well, been in nano since almost the very beginning and have always believed that it deserves much better love from the markets. Don't you think it would be much easier for the general public to use it if there was a metamask/phantom like wallet to manage it? Despite not having smart contracts there is a lot of utilities that can be created around it if it is easier to use. I know nault/natrium are top tier wallets, but having a wallet to directly interact with websites would give it a full new set of use cases. What do you think?

For those who are new, on behalf of the community, I wish you a warm welcome.

NANO is a decentralized protocol, the particularity of which is to have no transaction fees, nor to have any inflation (no NANO can ever be issued) and to be completely eco-responsible. You send 1 NANO, you receive exactly 1 NANO: the purchasing power is not diluted by the issuance of other coins or by transaction fees which serve to “secure” the protocol; and from an energy point of view, your transaction almost equal zero. Oh and…. The transaction is confirmed in record time (0.4 seconds if I remember correctly).

The protocol has been running for several years now, and there has never been any double spending. Attacks have taken place against the protocol (...as on any protocol), and issues have been fixed, making NANO spam resistant for two years now. I encourage users to read about the solutions provided for NANO's particular case, called the bucket system (fascinating solution, and read - ).

More recently, some progress was made and there's still promises ahead : V26 is at the gates; some speculations are taking place regarding the possible integration of NANO on “X” while Grök, the AI of the X application, constantly refers to the protocol as the best protocol among all cryptocurrencies (see the image down below , one example among multiple). It become more and more real that NANO could make a real come back in the top 100, quicker than we can think.

The relevance of NANO ?

In a world where inflation is galloping, where the centralization of States threatens individual freedoms, where environmental problems threaten humanity, in an interconnected world requiring speed and reliability, NANO offers an original solution, which does not base its mechanisms on no human intervention, and which meets all of these challenges: hyper-fast, secure, eco-responsible, decentralized and without any inflation. Oh, and... the community is awesome.

Again, let me wish you a great welcome and a great discovery !

Nano is currently featured as the seventh most trending word in the cryptocurrency market, according to *Santiment'*s social trends.

Connected words are: Node, Watch, Learn, Questions, Use, Faucets, Paid.

Moreover, it shows a 7-day social dominance of 3.13%, only challenged by "Bitcoin ETF" related words.

Interestingly, nano also features as a connected word to "spot" in the 4th position.

Source:

EDIT 1 (21:40 UTC) - An increased social activity continues fuelling XNO on Santiment's 24-hour trending words. Notably, #nano is the third most trending cryptocurrency-related word of the day, losing only to both etf and etfs. Connected words are learn, node, watch, and questions.

EDIT 2 (January 11, 00:03 UTC): Nano is currently in second place, with nearly 4% social dominance (7d).

2024 brings an american election expected to draw many interfering actors. Bot swarms can be directed to overwhelm systems as a w ay of blocking legitimate processes. If there were a proven effective counter to this, like Time As A Currency it could contribute to a smooth legitimate election process and cast a good light on XNO as well.

Go do that.

Go on now...
