So, would anyone be interested in having a “competition” based around journal writing. My thought is that I always intend to start keeping a journal at the beginning of the year. And, I do it for a few days, before setting it aside as something that I just don’t have the time for.

If you are in a similar situation, how about having a competition starting on January 1st, 2026? This would be different from the Novel Writing competition. My proposed guidelines are fairly simple: 100 pages in 31 days.

What is a page? That’s somewhat subjective, but I’d say that should be at least an A5 sheet of paper (148 x 210 mm). Word count should be ~350 words per page.

You can use whatever you want: a paper journal, an eInk device, or any other note-taking device. (Phone, tablet, computer, whatever).

If there’s enough interest, I’ll set up a leader board in TrackBear where we can track our progress, and schedule an event for the community.

(Note: this is a re-post. I didn't realize that polls won't federate to Lemmy... So, please "vote" below with a comment.)

So, now that we are on the last leg of the competition, I wanted to put forward some thoughts I had on this first iteration of the competition, and ask for some input.

First : I think this month went well, overall. I enjoyed the daily posting and getting to chat with each of you throughout the competition. I think there is more to this than just a group of random people showing up. I think if we didn't have a core group that was committed to the spirit of the competition, this could have fallen apart quickly. So, for that, I applaud all of the participants.

Second : I've been really happy with how much the group has grown in this first month. Now, while the sidebar says we have 70 subscribers, there are about 20-30 of them that are bots that joined to promote "new/small communities". But that still means we have around 30-35 subscribers. (Including one that I was very surprised to see subscribing very early on...).

Third : The future. This is where I wanted to open things up. What should we do now that we have a community established? I have a bunch of thoughts and ideas, but I want to follow what the community wants to do. So, here's my idea:

  1. Post your ideas. And let's have a discussion about them.
  2. When the discussion has reached a point where there is a decision to make, I'll post a poll.
  3. If there is additional conversation to be had, we can have in the comments for the poll.

Hopefully this sounds like a good idea to everyone.

Exactly as described. I decided upon this particular passage from Chapter 7:

"As Katsumi and his horse arrived, he got off the horse, and hitched it to a specialized wagon. This wagon had a house hitch made by the fox folk, which was designed for transporting houses. These were all tiny houses, for which was the homesteading fox's house type of choice. Once everything was hitched together, and Katsumi placed everything he needed to keep his wealth in the wagon, he climbed onto his horse again and rode off. He then rode to meet up with Katso-kun and Misagi at the place of what was now their old homestead. Once everyone had everything they needed together, the three of them embarked on a journey only Methuselah could have even called for, knowing the prophecy that a leigon would be circling around them. Once that legion circled around, this was the Abomination of Ruin, of which they knew was coming. They prepared for this the night prior, so being able to do something like this on short notice was a small feat to these fox folk, but numerous humans would not understand as to why.

During the day, the three of them kept riding on their horses, single-file, with Katsumi at the front. Katso-kun and Misagi knew by now that Katsumi was a Silent Prophet, and that he seemingly knew the way. They did not realize, however, that Katsumi had to leave it to the Creator, and likely Methuselah, to lead the way. Katsumi would only go where he was called, and so would Misagi and Katso-kun. Within a short time frame, the three of them found a spot to stop for the night as the sun had set. A day always ended at sunset for the fox folk who followed a lunisolar calendar, of which Katsumi would always follow. Misagi and Katso-kun ended up following Katsumi's lead, as this was something they had missed when reading the set-apart texts for the fox folk. This was hard to do unless one knew who to go to for a teacher. Katsumi, to Katso-kun and Misagi, was that teacher they probably were incognizant of, whom they so desperately needed all those years ago. Katsumi, on the other hand, did not understand that yet, but he was starting to get the gist of it.

As the three of them rested for the night, Katsumi looked up at the moon to see what it was doing. Thankfully, it was waning, but not enough for it to be a waning half moon yet, which would be the twenty-second of the month using this calendar. Katsumi looked at Misagi and Katso-kun, and told them, "The moon is in a waning phase, though it is not at a half moon yet. We are not too close to the twenty-second day of the month on our holy calendar yet, but we are getting there." Katsumi checked his calendar, which he had handy, to ensure he had it correct. After taking a look, it was not too close to the twenty-second, but not too far either."

So, what's everyone doing now that the competition is over? Do you have plans for your novel?

Personally, I've set mine aside for a little bit. I am: (a) looking for a better software solution (Sokio - I'm looking at Obsidian + Longform now...), (b) doing some research before I move forward (while I don't want to do hard SciFi, I want my novel to feel like a potential reality), and (c) obviously there are the upcoming holidays which means other stuff going on.

I'm hoping to get back to my novel by the end of the year, and have a real draft written sometime early next year.

The milestone had been marked. 50,174 is the official word count for my novel, and all I did was write what turned out to be an epilogue, since I wanted a plot twist by the end of the final chapter (Chapter 13 for me here).

While there are still a few hours to go, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who participated in this first FediWriMo.

The image in this post is the certificate that participants are receiving upon completion of the competition.

(Aside: I would schedule this post to go out at midnight CST like have for all the others, but it appears that Lemmy instances were seeing the posts before they were scheduled...so no point in scheduling this one.)

I wanted to get some experiences from both sides, though I'll give my experience as a pantser.

I've always been a spontaneous kinda guy, though my producer tends to be very meticulous in his planning (he uses numerology to do plan releases of his major works). Despite our spontaneity, I tend to be more of a guy who just pulls a lot of shenanigans off in the first place. For me, personally speaking, it makes sesne for me to have something in my head and go off of that.

Pantsing tends to help me with a ton, and I mean a ton of plot twists that could help, and tiny plot armor if and/or when needed. For example, towards the end of my work, my protagonist is finally able to do what he was meant to do (which I won't spoil here). I will say, however, that he was meant to do this, but he was in an area he couldn't due to how persecuted he was to begin with. I can say similar with how Neigsendoig (my producer) writes, considering the fact that we tend to just have ideas that we want to make into reality (watch The Survival Podcast Ep. 3688 if you want to know where I got that from).

Regardless, that's my quick notes on my pantsing experience. What do y'all tend to do when writing? Pants or Plot? No competition is intended, just me wanting to know both sides of it out of curiosity.

I used to have cats. I miss when they interrupted me while I was working on writing a story, blog post, or whatever. The distraction was always worth it.

Hopefully, for those who are still going, there aren't any major ongoing distractions in your way. (But a cat distraction would be good.)

I know Thanksgiving is specific to the United States (although other countries have similar holidays), but this is a good point in the competition to take stock: you have a nearly completed novel. Only about 5K to go, if you are on target.

Personally, I am very thankful for this month. I am thankful for meeting all of you who have been participating in this competition. (I'm also thankful for those who have been lurking. 😀)

I don't know how much I've mentioned this, but for quite some time I was unable to partake in this annual ritual because of family issues. And, over the last five years, I haven't been able to find the motivation. But, this group has given me just enough of a push for me to actually do this again. Get me back into my love of writing.

Are you getting that "slow down" feeling? That feeling that comes from being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel? Knowing that your goal is within your reach?

Well, it's still time to keep the power flowing. Keep pouring in as much effort as you can so you don't miss by a few hairs. Better to overshoot your goal than to just miss it.

So, we have less than a week to go.

If you are trying to hit the word count goal: keep going. If you are already at or near your word count goal, you should be thinking about how to actually wrap things up in your novel.

So, how is your progress? Are you going to make the goal? Are you going to have a completed novel?

So, we're into the final full-week of FediWriMo, and only one person is behind.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the growth of this community. While we haven't heard from others, we started this month with single digit subscribers (heck, I started the community the night before the challenge began), and we've grown to 26 subscribers.

If any of the subscribers we haven't heard from are doing their own writing month challenge, we'd love to hear from you. If any of you have any other feedback, please feel free to post it. This community isn't just for those of us who've been psoting stats. It's for all subscribers.

Hiya all, working on my 50k for this year's writing month. You're welcome to add me here if you like: https://writingmonth.org/~miguel/

This year I won't be using my Royal Futura 800 for my first draft like I usually do, I'll be using that $40 macbook pro I bought and restored just for this purpose. The second draft will be going through the Royal, though.

This year's story is different from my usual. I was challenged to step out of my Sci-Fi comfort zone, so I'm doing something entirely different!

Just a thought: I created this community very quickly without giving much thought to the name...basically because I was basing it on the NaNoWriMo2 website.

However, maybe it would be better to break away from the NaNoWriMo branding? I could make it more specific to our corner of the internet. I'm thinking maybe FediWriMo.

Let me know what you think below. Suggest alternate names, and if there is a good one with a lot of up votes, we can maybe go with that one instead (but no Boaty McBoatface type meme names, please...).
