My Spez comic is currently #3 on /r/funny and hoping the morning US crowd sends it up again. Thanks for all the support, I know this final comic is a bit spicy but here's the full rez if you didn't want to go to reddit to see it. I'm just glad my little Lemmy plug on the bottom is getting some attention. Take care everyone!

I don't know where to share/promote new communities, exactly, but if there are any musicians moving over from Reddit, feel free to come share what you're making/what you've made.

I'd really prefer not to be the only person posting!

The next 2 weeks...any predictions/bets on what it will be then?

This Apollo inspired Lemmy website can be installed as a webapp on any phone, and it works flawlessly and has a beautiful design. Currently, it's the best Lemmy app. I highly recommend it.

Does federation have a bit of a learning curve? No doubt.

Is Lemmy buggy as heck? Absolutely.

But I don’t think that really justifies a lot of the comments I’m seeing in Reddit alternatives threads that it’s hard to figure out. The front page feed and sort options are very similar to Reddit. Searching for same-instance communities is not too difficult. Posting, commenting, and voting are all quite intuitive. What’s the problem?

I was standing on the street today when a man and woman passed me. The man was heatedly explaining to the woman about the reddit strike. I overheard him say "It's the third largest subreddit...." and he was making hand gestures I could see as they walked past. (Which one is the third largest?)

I was half a mind to run after him and say "I want to talk to you about this! I understand!!" But I couldn't think of what would happen next, other than ruining their evening. They seemed to be on their way to go somewhere. Hopefully to talk about something other than reddit.

That's all. I usually never have IRL observations of reddit.

A message Thank you everyone for your support since 2009.

Thank you to /u/anon_smithsonian in particular for taking care of everyone on /r/redditisfun.

RIF, you’re quirky and rough around the edges, but you’ve always gotten the job done. You know how to get out of the way and show people the articles, discussions, pictures, and videos they came for.

You have the silliest name, but we love you all the more for it. RIF will always be fun in our hearts.

RIF has been so much of my life.

I’m honored that so many of you have felt the same way.

Thank you for sharing this journey with me. It’s been fun.

(This space will be updated on July 1.)

Hey Kbin-folk, I’ve recently published my take on the “threadiverse” in the form of a quasi-guide but with some other commentary. Appreciate any feedback, good or bad!

Here’s the message shown in the screenshot behind the link:

Dear BaconReader users,

We wanted to inform you with a heavy heart that, starting from July 1, 2023, BaconReader will be unable to function due to the recent API changes made by Reddit.

If you have any questions or would like to share your thoughts, we warmly invite you to visit r/baconreader, where our community continues to thrive.

We cannot express enough gratitude for your unwavering support throughout the incredible journey of the past 12 years. It has been an absolute privilege and honor to serve you.

With heartfelt appreciation,
The BaconReader Team ❤️

"I just released a really important Apollo update that adds the ability for users with remaining subscription time left to decline an automatic refund. Devs pay refunds out of pocket, and this will be about $250K, so I thank you for your consideration. ❤️ Also, this update includes an amazing "Goodbye Apollo Wallpaper Set” for your phone, tablet, or desktop, created by outrageously talented Apollo icon designers. You can unlock the pack with a donation that helps with refund costs. 🙂"

Narwhal developer believes they can keep the third party iOS Reddit app running with a subscription.

Copy and pasted from Reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/getnarwhal/comments/14kt9wj/narwhal_is_not_going_anywhere_subscriptions_and/?utm_name=ioscss

Hey all, I want to give you an update on what is happening with Narwhal. I've been talking with Reddit a lot about the API changes and what it will mean for Narwhal.

Narwhal is not going anywhere on July 1st. It will continue to operate as it has for many years (except it will not have ads anymore). Over the next few months, I am going to be adding subscriptions into Narwhal 2. The subscriptions will be there to cover the cost of using the Reddit API. I am still figuring out what to do for heavy power users, but there may be a base plan which includes X number of API requests/month and you can top up your balance with another purchase. The subscription will likely be in the $4-$7 range to start. It may change based on total usage of the app (either up or down) to cover the costs of using the reddit API.

Yes, this means Narwhal 2 is finally going to see the light of day. Is it perfect? No. Is it as finished as I wanted it to be before I released it? No. But it makes the most sense to put subscriptions in Narwhal 2 instead of the current app.

TLDR; Narwhal is not going anywhere on July 1st. Subscriptions will be coming over the next few months.

Ask me anything in the comments and I'll do my best to answer! Also, let me know if this is something that you actually want me to do. Are you willing to subscribe to continue using Narwhal?

Thank you everyone!

Hey all, I recently left reddit like many of you. I have a question regarding lemmy and the fediverse on the history of banning and defederation. I have noticed several posts calling for varying communities to be disconnected. were these removal requests as prevalent before the mass migration? Usually I am all for communities existsting in their own spaces, barring illegal content. I am hoping that the new users are coming here with the intent to learn how this community works, before we try to remake the community we just left.

What exactly are Reputation Points and how are they calculated? I've got mostly upvoted comments and a few boosts but I'm sitting at -3 and I'd like to know how it works and what it means.

Should we sticky some articles?

Followup to https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/84223/How-to-get-the-word-out-on-how-to-delete

Today I saw a handful of posts from folks who were trying to delete all their content from reddit, including another person who failed and now can't delete their content after their account was deleted.

I am thinking of two options here.

First, as per the title, we can sticky the best articles made in this magazine, so the first thing a new joiner sees is the warning about the 1000 index limit and the second on how to overcome it.

The other way would be to stick an article referring folks to a new magazine. If you look at the first article ever to this magazine from the owner, https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/12303/Welcome-to-RedditMigration , this magazine was meant to cover all things, news as well as technical questions.

However, I fear that the high volume of important news is drowning out the technical aspects. Therefore, it may make sense to copy or link some content into a separate magazine so it is easier to find and to refer to.

Not to split the magazine, more like a BestOfRedditMiggirationTechnicalAnswers if that makes sense.

Thoughts folks? Especially interested in hearing about this idea from the mods @tchambers & @Shortcake

I imagine that with the influx of new users, instances paid by volunteers will be stretched. Some I imagine are creating instances, to spread out the load, but some of us cannot / don't want to create and manage instances. For these efforts to be successful I imagine that monetary support would be helpful.

Is there a way to support instances / development?

BS, I say!

Looking for a way to deal with my comments and posts, limited and not-all-that-valuble as they are. (I mean, I'm no poop knife...)

has anyone used redact it? what was your experience on it- if not what else have you used?

372

I had been thinking about leaving Reddit for months before the API announcement came. I was tired of the toxic content, also tired of being drawn in by it.

I was never a power user, lurked a lot and only posted and commented in a few niche subs. I suppose I can still lurk, but so far I like it here at Lemmy.

My 3rd party app (RedReader) will apparently be allowed to stay for free (due to their high accesibility), but who knows how long that will last.

I deleted my account, didn't bother dealing with a comment deleting script. I just made my reasons very clear and hope they get the message.

Thanks to all who have been involved in creating these federated spaces!

So as july 1 is getting close, I’d like to get all my info off of reddit and saved locally. I’ve been looking for tools and found a few, but they all include coding wich I don’t understand. Is there an easy way to get all my saved posts, comments etc in a neat html like document saved on my pc? Other than requesting it from reddit that is.

374

I know there’s only a few days before 3rd party apps no longer function so this idea may be too late…

I’ve been reading about scripts that automatically delete all of your Reddit posts and comments. I would like to see one of those scripts written into the third party apps so that I can nuke the site from orbit upon my escape. It’s the only way to be sure.
