For those who want to permanently migrate from Reddit I have created two communities that I will miss a lot starting June 30th: bearapp thingsapp Anyone who wants to help as a moderator is welcome!

After two weeks I visited reddit again. Holy shit the misogyny and lack of critical thinking in the comments is something else.
Eternal summer over there

Little stuff like this is how we're going to get the Fediverse from 0 to 1.

I wrote a quick manual for some friends trying to leave reddit and get their saved stuff, maybe it'll help someone else as well. Feel free to point out any mistakes, I'm by no means an expert.

The bad, although expected news is that according to Similarweb via Gizmodo Reddit traffic is back to pre-protest levels. The caveat is that some of the traffic might still indicate protests, (i.e. John Oliver pics). Most interesting:

However, Similarweb told Gizmodo traffic to the ads.reddit.com portal, where advertisers can buy ads and measure their impact, has dipped. Before the first blackout began, the ads site averaged about 14,900 visits per day. Beginning on June 13, though, the ads site averaged about 11,800 visits per day, a 20% decrease.

For June 20 and 21, the most recent days for which Similarweb has estimates, the ads site got in the range of 7,500 to 9,000 visits, Carr explained, meaning that ad-buying traffic has continued to drop.>>>

I'm sure many of us have had the problem of getting a link to a Lemmy/Kbin instance that isn't your own. But you want to subscribe to a magazine.

I created this JS bookmarklet (well no, GPT4 made it. But I helped xd)

If you are on the magazine's feed, click the JS bookmarklet and you'll be taken to your Lemmy/Kbin instance with that feeds url.

Step 1: create the JS bookmarklet by creating a new bookmark manually. You can name it whatever, but make sure that the url field is this entire section:

javascript:(function(){let prefix='https://kbin.social/m/';let url=window.location.href;let parts=url.split('/');let finalPart=parts[parts.length-1];let host=parts[2];let newURL=prefix+finalPart+'@'+host;window.open(newURL,'_blank');})();

(Github Gist)

Step 2: modify the 'prefix' to be whatever it is that your instance puts in front of a federated magazine.

With Kbin this is usually the url of your instance /m

With Lemmy it's the same but with /c

Step 3: Profit. Now you can visit a magazine from a different instance, click on the js bookmarklet and it should open a new tab where you can see the magazine in your own instance. And easily upvote/downvote or subscribe to it.

Fuck /u/spez and all of that. It would be my 13th cake-day on July 7th 💩and I won't be on Reddit to celebrate because the account will have been shredded and deleted.

I'm glad we finally have an alternative (seemingly)decided on. I guess there isn't much else to talk about until 7/1 when a lot of blissfully ignorant reddit users realize they can't post anymore on their favorite app, when I think we'll see the biggest surge of new users. It feels as though the lack of conversation and "low" userbase - compared to reddit, is prompting users to ask if they made the right choice...

"Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on >Lemmy than Reddit?"

"POLL - Will you stay on lemmy?"

"let’s cut the “Reddit” circle jerk and start actually making >content"

It's too early for those questions and of course people are going to be talking about Reddit, it's our old home. I was a user on Digg before Reddit, the big difference was that Digg V4 blindsided us, we knew a change was coming but had no idea it would be that bad. /u/spez was so nice as to tell us we were fucked a month or so in advance.

The point is, chill out, explore this community and others if you're inclined and don't stress, the rest will follow along in time:

I have tons of saved posts, some of which I've saved for the link, some for the actual post and some for the discussion in it that I'd love to somehow save locally. Often I'd just 'print to pdf' but going through hundreds of posts and comments manually is a bit much and most of all, very time consuming. There must be some kind of a way to do this surely?

Please help me save my stuff!

Edit: also a way to save a complete wiki with all linked posts and other links would be great too. This shit is taking ages manually.

Kbin: covering all the current news and rumours out of Russia about Wagner, a possible coup, etc. Reddit: crickets Make of it what you will. 🤷‍♀️

What tools are folks using to moderate and access kbin/lemmy?

Web visits to top 5 #Kbin and #Lemmy servers over last 30 days...

According to The Information, Reddit’s revenues were up 38 percent in 2022, but that’s down from the “more than doubling of revenue” it saw from 2020 to 2021. That said, The Information says Reddit still earned “about $670 million” in revenues last year. I don’t know if getting back the $10 million in “pure infrastructure costs” CEO Steve Huffman told me that it takes to support third-party apps is going to make all that much of a difference.

Hi all,

I'm a developer that has an interest in online communities, fediverse software and, at a point in the very recent past, consuming and creating a lot of Reddit content. Discontented with regards to the direction Reddit has taken, I've taken it upon myself to start a small, general-purpose instance to give back to the /kbin community and help reduce load. The instance is hosted on a secure, well-equipped dedicated server and should support a large influx of users and communities. I will be regularly administrating it (and may even seek fellow admins); but ideally, administration will be hands-off and moderators will take onus for their magazines.

Come check us out at kbin.cafe. I'll be happy to answer any lingering questions in this thread.

Please be sure to report any issues by messaging me or emailing us at the address found in the linked post. Currently some avatars for some federated magazines are missing, but this will be resolved soon.

Thanks for reading!

Shout-out to my sisters and brothers-in-arms!

Report here if you got permabanned ("permanently suspended") while protesting Reddit, participating in the blackout, or for any related reason.

443

As the social media site matures, its users and moderators have made their displeasure about corporate changes known, putting the company into a bind.

444

I have to say, well written article (too bad they only mentioned Beehaw and not Lemmin). Reddit cannot exist without user content and more importantly the moderators who do a hard job for free.

Without moderators, subreddits simply become a free for all, the far west.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. What’s the best iOS app for Lemmy? I’m a long time Apollo user.

446

😂 amazing act of malicious compliance! fuck spez

447

User visits and time spent on the social media platform normalize after traffic to Reddit briefly dipped last week during the blackout, according to SimilarWeb.

Edit: but also see https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/88139/Reddit-traffic-returning-normal-sort-of which explains that ad visits are still waaay down - and continue going downhill.

Hi, I'm the operator of this bot that has been crossposting from Reddit directly into lemmy/kbin communities every hour.

You can check this account post history, it has been posting every hour to various communities and I wanted to know if you guys have noticed. So far only a couple of users have mentioned in the comments that this account is a bot, other than that, on engaging posts, users seems to participate in discussions organically.

Why am I making this post? I wanted to know your opinions, should this bot continue running? Should I adjust the criteria that's used for the posts? Should I increase or decrease frequency of posting? I want to know what you think about crossposting in smaller communities that need help with content.

So far the bot takes posts no older than 3 hours and in some cases where the sub is smaller 5 hours.

The intent to which I made this bot is to help moderators of communities that are moving here from reddit or for any user that wants to mirror content here that he previously saw on reddit to spend less time there.

So, what do you guys think? Check the bio for the GitHub link, as the bot is open source. Thank you for participating!

I didn't believe that reddit would "undeleted" comments. Well, now, I know that it's true.

I deleted everything (Posts, Comments) using Shreddit a few day ago (Shreddit edits the comments with a Lorem ipsum, then delete it), but yesterday I noticed some were not deleted, trying to run Shreddit again didn't work, they weren't detected by Shreddit, so I thought of it as a small bug.

So I deleted every comment left manually, editing and deleting them. This was yesterday.

Now it's tomorrow and some comment were back online. But this time Shreddit was able to delete them.

Feel free to check my profile today and come back in a few days to see if comments are coming back (I'll monitor this closely):

https://www.reddit.com/user/Kraftingg/comments/

I'm glad we can have a thriving platform on the fediverse now, it feel more like home here!

Edit: some comment might be from reopened subreddits afterr the blackout. So maybe not totally right after all.

Looking to see if I am welcom on kbin to express the viewpoint that it is not possible to be "trans."

I assert that it is not possible to transition and that gender is the same as sex.

Is this an acceptable viewpoint on kbin, or will I be banned for expressing this?

Not looking to start a fight, just want to know if such speech is tolerated here.
