Rules and miscellaneous:

  1. We take for granted that if you engage in this community, you understand that veganism is about the animals. You either are vegan for the animals, or you are not (this is not to say that discussions about climate/environment/health are not allowed, of course)
  2. No omni/carnist apologists. This is not a place where to ask to be hand-holded into veganims. Omnis coddling/backpatting is not tolerated, nor are /r/DebateAVegan-like threads
  3. Use content warnings and NSFW tags for triggering content

Vegan patties!

For about two months, every weekday I made myself a burger for lunch. The active part of the research was what can I find within a ten minute drive, how the patties cooked on the stove, and how they tasted. The rest of the research is pure data from the back of the boxes as seen in the spreadsheet below.

Note: Data collected summer of 2023 in Colorado

Summary: They're pretty much all the same! Ta-da~. Seriously though, if you're not picky, just grab whatever is available and cheapest at the store you go to. Except for Gardein which glues itself to your stainless steel pot no matter how oil and shuffling you give it.

The most interesting finding was that there are two main types and they're all fairly similar within those types. And even more interesting (to me at least), the type can be inferred purely from the weight of the patty. 113g = meat-like, 71g = veggie mush. Surprisingly consistent across multiple brands. The most obvious outlier is Field Roast, who never follows the rules and makes the weirdest product. Their weight and flavor line up with a hybrid: kinda-meaty but obviously vegetables smashed together.

Other findings:

  • Gardein brands are a PITA to cook, they ooze superglue and I have to use the steel wool to clean up char every time
  • TJ's Masala is the tastiest and cheapest, but it's junkfood (amazing with peri-peri style hot sauce)
  • Good Catch's salmon burgers were the next tastiest, and get extra points for uniqueness
  • King Soopers (Kroger) had a summer long sale on the Beyond Cookout Classic, making them the next cheapest per patty. Since they have the highest caloric content, this also made them the best cal/$ by a wide margin

Been looking for a canvas bag and just wanted to share my frustration with bag makers feeling the need to slap a needless leather patch onto an otherwise vegan product. WHY?

When picking avacados to buy, aim for the ones that are longer than they are round. If it's as round as an orange, you're going to get this kind of all-pit bullshit.

Does anyone have any favorite tofu marinades they’d like to share? I just discovered freezing tofu as a method of getting the water out of it, and it’s the first tofu I’ve actually enjoyed the texture of . It could use a little flavor though!

My spouse loves these "ultimate" gardien chikun patties. And I beat the system by getting 4 in the bag. Not sure if this is appropriate to post here though, let me know if its not!

This is my favorite vegan baked beans recipe. For extra flavor I add about 2 1/2 tablespoons of the vegan chicken bullion I just posted about. I also add the optional molasses (makes a big difference imo) and a dried Chile.

Below is a recipe I've been using for a while now that I lifted from this old reddit thread. I've found it works great as an addition to most soups, sauces or gravies either alone or as a flavor booster (honestly, nutritional yeast by itself will do that to a large extent and is seriously underutilized).

Vegan Chicken Bouillon Based on this recipe

  • 1 cup nutritional yeast flakes
  • 3 tablespoons onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon celery seeds
  • 1 tablespoon table salt
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay (or paprika)*
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

Blend all ingredients to a powder. Dissolve 2 teaspoons per cup of boiling water, then adjust ingredients and ratios to taste. Poultry Seasoning can also be a good addition. Store in an airtight container.

*I'm not a fan of paprika, because it always seems to disappear when combined with other ingredients. Old Bay, on the other hand, complements whatever it's added to without overpowering.

The words of Greta Thunberg this week

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Pyi0L7_vwo

Activists are being systemically targeted with repression and are paying the price for defending life and the right to protest.

We are seeing now extremely worrying developments where activists all over the world are experiencing increased repressions just for fighting for our present and our future.

There is extreme hypocrisy when it comes to this. All over the world we're experiencing this. Not the least, for example, here in France. Just the other day - that activists are being systemically targeted with repression and are paying the price for defending life and the right to protest.

We're still speeding in the wrong direction

We are now at an extremely critical point. The emissions of greenhouse gasses are at an all-time-high, and the concentration of Co2 in the atmosphere hasn't been this high in the entire history of humanity.

And we're still speeding in the wrong direction. The emissions are on the rise, and science has been very clear on this. And the people living on the front-lines of the climate emergency have been sounding the alarm for a long time

I found this recipe recently and I love it!

It’s super easy to make, very tasty, fills you up quickly and is also quite healthy! I often make it for breakfast but you can also serve it as a lunch.

It takes me 30-45 minutes time to make them but it’s well worth the effort :)

I just made this last night. Actually tastes like mayonnaise. Well, what I remember it tasing like anyways. With how pricey store bought vegan mayonnaise can be, even buying an emersion blender for this can save you loads of money in the long run. Plus you have the benefit of not tormenting chickens for no good reason!

I am new to the federated universe after leaving reddit last week. The subs I miss most are both r/veganfoodporn and r/shittyveganfoodporn. I loved seeing all the different vegan dishes from around the world and getting ideas for new recipes. Is there a comparable community anyone knows about here? When I search my community (Instance? Server? Not sure the correct term) I don't see any, but understand if it's there hasn't been a prior connection, it won't show up. Suggestions much appreciated.

Pls downvote me so I can experience the public shaming I feel I need.

Why? I always only own one pair and wear it down. My pair at the time decided the top wanted to part ways with the sole so it did so I needed a new pair. The one I bought looked normal on the small photo I saw online on the website with a major sale (I paid 20 euros for the shoes, the normal price was 150 I reckon). I didn't filter by material and didn't see it saying it's not not body parts. They make my feet hurt so I need to buy new anyway. I feel bad and need therapeutic downvotes. I will appreciate your cooperation.
