I do this with games too. It takes literal years for me to beat games because I always reach a point where I get distracted by something else and then drop my current game for over a year and feel no motivation to continue once I've pivoted. These days if I want to beat a game I'll lock in and do nothing but play that game for days on end. New game came out? Nah, I gotta stay locked. Friends hanging out online playing games together? Nope. Locked in. I'll even turn off my phone and other monitors just to make sure I don't get distracted.
With TV shows it's almost impossible to lock in sometimes because they just take too long. I can keep my attention on one thing for a few weeks at a time but I can't do it for the amount of time a show requires unless I somehow habitualize it into my day like watching it when I eat dinner. And even then I'll often times switch shows about halfway through.
I've never seen the 3rd act of Shadow of War. One of my favorite game franchises of all time. AC4: Black Flag, too.
I stopped RDR2 somewhere in the middle on a relative high note. People say the plot is traumatizing so I think I accidentally made a good call.
You're doing yourself a disservice by not finishing rdr2, my bro
I played shadow of Mordor 3 times and always lost motivation as soon as you make it to the second area
Similar problem with Dying Light too.
Same for me but with Shadow of Mordor. I beat it eventually after a few years but now I wanna replay it before I go to Shadow of War even though I know I'll never get around to it. Such is life I guess. :)
I used to do this with JRPGSs all the time, I'd spend hours and hours grinding levels but when it finally got near the end I'd just stop playing.
I did that with Final Fantasy X twice before I finally beat it. I was literally two boss fights from the end of the game and just dropped it for no reason both times even though I absolutely love that game. Glad I finally beat it though because that game is amazing.
Haha yeah the Final Fantasy games were great to do that with because they had a lot of secrets and extra quests and then the ultra weapons/summons etc. of course you had to do all that so by the end came around I was like ok I think I get it lol. Maybe I subconsciously didn't want it to end and just have it an open ending I dunno. Agreed that's a fantastic game, initially I kinda ignored it because I really didn't like the blitzball lol, but glad I stuck it out.
I got distracted with blitz ball for many many hours and never finished the actual game.
I’m sitting on a scarlet nexus run.. turns out there’s some other media related to it so I’m debating re-starting it..
I love those super ultra long jrpgs… sometimes.. but man they are wicked difficult to finish sometimes. I think it’s around when the interpersonal dialogue starts getting redundant (because you might not watch/play through all of them, and if you do it’s repetitive), and I just get bored with the relationship building so the story isn’t holding me anymore.
Yeah I feel like they have gotten a lot more verbose with each generation haha, to be honest the latest generations have been a bit much for me because of all that extra dialogue and yeah the relationship building and a lot of other mechanics they throw in that detract from the game tbh.
I literally got to the final area in Tales of Berseria and Paper Mario: TTYD and just stopped lol...
It's even worse because I've played through everything before that in TTYD like four times.
Games are entertainment, not chores. You don't have to finish them, nothing wrong with enjoying a game for a time and then being done before the "end".
Well, yeah, I know that. The problem is that I do want to finish them, I just never do. I want to know the storyline, the lore, the ending, the plot twist, the emotional scenes, I love it all as an experience. I just know that if I don't lock in I'll never know the story and how it ends. And as long as I stay locked in I enjoy it thoroughly. If anything, taking breaks from the game makes it not my main focus and then it does become a chore which is when I lose interest. I'm grinding it out while I enjoy it specifically so it does not become a chore.
I personally find a lot of media has pacing problems. I hate it when the main questline is supposed to be super urgent, but it just turns into a grind halfway through. Like, I'm the Chosen One who's going to stop the looming apocalypse, but the farmer won't help you unless you find his lost sheep first. I can't just pay him to get a replacement sheep and get on with it, I gotta do a stupid buggy escort mission, and quite frankly, I'd rather do the dishes.
This has been me with Morrowind. I’ve been trying to play it for literal years, but I can’t ever finish a playthrough. Which sucks because I actually really like the game, I just can’t get hooked on it for some reason.
I didn't beat the main quest Skyrim, Oblivion, or Morrowind until at least a decade after I bought them. Didn't even beat Morrowind until just a couple years ago. :P
I sank a few hundred hours over many different characters into Skyrim. Still never finished the main quest line.
I’ve got over 5k hours and in the realm of 50-100 playthroughs and I’ve probably only beat the main quest 2 or 3 times.
Maybe I should just mess around the next time I play Morrowind. I’m currently playing Skyrim again, then I’ll probably play Oblivion for a while, and then I’ll try Morrowind again. Hopefully it’ll click this time. I really want to get hooked on it.
I definitely recommend heavily modding it. One I cannot live without when playing is the one that let's you increase the view distance further than two feet in front of your face. Its such a beautiful game and it's kind of a shame that the hardware limited the view distance in the first place.
Any other suggestions? I know of OpenMW but that’s it.
I mostly go for quality of life and stability ones. There are some decent guides on the Steam forums which I usually go through when I'm modding it. I usually just go for the unofficial patch, the view distance one, and a few more small ones. I'm kind of a purist so I don't like all the graphics update ones but there are some that are just essential. You'll have to get the MWSE (Morrowind Script Extender) in order to get some of them to work. I'll link one of the guides that I usually skim through to pick and choose which ones I want. The one for view distance is called Distant Land and requires the enhanced graphics mod.
It'll be a bit of work, but once your done you'll have a much better time.
