A fediverse-centered watch party just got underway last week: of the classic bestselling sports comedy series "Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl!"

Brief instructions: at 10pm ET (6pm PT) on Mondays, look here: https://live.literalgrill.com/

Long instructions:

  • proceedings start around 9:40pm ET with a pre-show of "Little Prince Cedie" (apparently an anime adaptation of "Little Lord Fauntleroy"?) Yawara! starts around 10pm ET.
  • The link https://live.literalgrill.com/ is an owncast stream, which is like the free fediverse version of twitch. It includes a chat interface so you can discuss the stream with others.
  • edit: see the announcement here for more info: https://livetweety.wordpress.com/
  • last week we watched the first three episodes so you haven't missed much though if you want you can watch them on youtube: one, two, three.

The story centers around Yawara Inokuma, a seemingly ordinary high school girl, but her grandfather, a living judo legend, has been secretly training her since she was a child so that she can win the gold medal at the Olympic Games. But Yawara has only one desire, to have a normal life.

In 1990, the manga won the 35th Shogakukan Manga Award for the general category. Yawara! has over 30 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

The anime, produced by Kitty Film with animation by the Madhouse studio, aired on Japanese television contemporary with Kitty's Ranma ½, but achieved higher ratings than Ranma ½, despite the latter series' being more well known outside Japan.
