Image is of the Herðubreið tuya in northeast Iceland, formed when ice sheets covered Iceland thousands of years ago. It's not really relevant to the Grindavik situation but I think they look neat. The title also doesn't make much sense but I saw the pun and took it.

Off in Iceland, different kinds of tunnels are causing problems. Underneath the town of Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, not far from the capital of Reykjavik, tens of thousands of earthquakes are portending the movement of magma in tunnels underneath the peninsula, which could breach the surface and cause an eruption. The 4000 residents of the town have been evacuated as the magma has risen to less than a kilometer below the surface.^TRG^

Icelandic volcanism is pretty fascinating, with the country sitting on the mid-Atlantic ridge, the birthing line of new oceanic crustal rock running right down the Atlantic ocean for many thousands of kilometers, as well as a hotspot, an upwelling of mantle material of debated origin which also feeds otherwise-inexplicable volcanism in the middle of tectonic plates, like Yellowstone and Hawaii.

An additional factor here is the presence of glaciers. When a volcano erupts underneath a glacier, the melting water cools the lava rapidly, causing features usually seen in volcanoes that erupt under the sea like pillow basalts, but also unique features like tuyas, which are steep-sided but flat-topped volcanoes. The rapid melting of water can also cause glacial floods called jökulhlaups.

Icelandic volcanoes have had significant regional and even global impacts in the past. In 2010, the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which was a volcano covered by an ice cap, erupted and the ash cloud spread across Europe, causing airline disruption for about a month which caused nearly $2 billion in total losses for airline companies - though this seems pretty quaint compared to the pandemic's impact on airlines in retrospect. Back in the 1780s, the Laki volcano killed a quarter of the Icelandic population due to sulphur dioxide causing massive crop failure and cattle death. This eruption's impacts spread to Europe and beyond, causing notable worldwide temperature drops and thus crop failures and may well have been a contributing factor to the outbreak of the French Revolution, which obviously heralded the death of the feudal order and the eventual primacy of capitalism in its place. That being said, any eruption at Grindavik is very probably not going to have any significant worldwide impacts - there are over a hundred volcanoes already in Iceland, and regular climate change is doing a great job at causing mayhem right now anyway. It's also still possible that there won't be an eruption at all, at least not in the short to medium term.

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

::: spoiler 🟢 Hamas press conference held today to "discuss the findings of investigations into the massacre at the music festival in the Gaza envelope on October 7th and the escalation of the Nazi terrorist aggression against the Gaza Strip":

— The pace of the occupation's massacres has intensified in recent days, to the point where hardly a day goes by without a horrific massacre broadcasted to the world on television screens. From the Al-Fallah School massacre, Al-Fahkoura School massacre, and yesterday's massacre in Tal Al-Zaatar in Jabalia, to today's Sheikh Radwan massacre, which claimed the lives of hundreds of martyrs. This is in addition to the continuous killing around the clock of unarmed children and civilians, from the north to the south of the Strip.

Despite the pain we endure from today's Nazi massacres against our people, we wish to discuss the occupation's narrative, which formed the basis for its aggression and genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip.

We all followed the results of the occupation police's investigation, which many occupation media outlets reported on regarding the targeting of celebrants in the "Ra'im" settlement in the Gaza Envelope on October 7th. The investigation indicated that Apache warplanes bombed the participants of the music festival, and the charred bodies were the result of incendiary missiles from a zionist warplane.

Moreover, Benjamin Netanyahu's advisor stated that out of 1,400 killed on October 7th, 200 were Palestinians.

This celebration, attended by about 4,000 settlers and foreigners, was held with the occupation's knowledge, particularly since the occupation police had approved extending the festival to Saturday.

All of this confirms beyond doubt that the occupation, in the face of its security, intelligence, and military failure on October 7th, committed a massacre against those attending the festival, due to the confusion and chaos within the leadership of the entity and its security and military apparatuses.

It does not stop there. The occupation bombed many settlers' homes, suspecting the presence of captives, increasing the number of settler casualties by the occupation's aircraft, which took off and bombed many areas in the Gaza Envelope from the first hour of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, which directly targeted the [IOF] Gaza Brigade and its military bases.

This approach of lies, adopted by the occupation in all its operations and movements, was also seen in the play at Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital and Al-Shifa Medical Complex, which the occupation claimed to be using as a military base for Hamas and a hiding place for its captured [IOF] officers and soldiers.

In addition to exposing the occupation’s story and its lies regarding hospitals, after the Nazi occupation army killed dozens of premature children in cold blood due to cutting off water, electricity, and denying medicine and food, it transformed Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital, Al-Nasr Complex, and Al-Shifa Medical Complex into military bases, after evacuating hundreds of critically ill patients, expelling medical teams and thousands of displaced people by force of arms and tanks stationed in the hospital courtyards.

In contrast, the world witnessed the ethics of the resistance fighters, derived from the noble teachings of our religion and its enduring values in peace and war. They did not target settlers, as one settler woman recounted how Al-Qassam fighters refused to harm her and her children on the first day of the Al-Aqsa Flood battle, allowing her to return. Other settlers in the "Ofakim" settlement spoke to the Hebrew media about the ethics and humanity of Al-Qassam Brigades fighters, the most evident proof being the Al-Qassam elements preparing milk for children, while the Nazi criminal occupation army deprived premature children in Al-Shifa of milk, watched by the entire world on television, and continued to deny all essentials of life to 2.3 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

🟢 Hamas press conference held today to "discuss the findings of investigations into the massacre at the music festival in the Gaza envelope on October 7th and the escalation of the Nazi terrorist aggression against the Gaza Strip" (2/2):

— In the face of this undeniable truth, we affirm the following:

  • First: The U.S. administration and President Biden must retract their support for the occupation in its aggression and genocide against our Palestinian people and apologize for adopting the false zionist narrative.

  • Second: The U.S. administration and President Biden bear direct responsibility for the continuation of the Nazi occupation's aggression on our people with American weapons and support. Therefore, we demand they take responsibility also in stopping the aggression and genocide against children and unarmed civilians.

  • Third: We also demand that all European countries, which have adopted the occupation's narrative, apologize and stop all forms of support for the occupation, or else they are considered complicit in this fascist aggression.

  • Fourth: We call on the UN Security Council and the General Assembly to convene and take a responsible decision to immediately stop the Nazi occupation's aggression on the Gaza Strip.

  • Fifth: We call on the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to condemn the zionist entity and hold it fully accountable politically, legally, and materially for the genocide and destruction witnessed in the Gaza Strip.

  • Sixth: We urge the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to immediately open the Rafah crossing and humanitarian corridors in accordance with the decision of the emergency Arab and Islamic summit a week ago. Every hour that passes costs the lives of dozens of children and civilians.

  • Seventh: We demand that the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation actively work with the United Nations to establish a special court to hold the leaders of the occupation, the new Nazis, accountable for the crimes they have committed against our people, including the killing of about 13,000 martyrs, most of them children and women. If there is any remaining credibility, everyone must take responsibility and not allow these new Nazis to escape punishment.
