MODERATORS

A shitty admin works with a shitty propaganda machine to produce shitty bullshit.

George Washington would be super happy to see what we’ve become. Sorta like how Jesus would be stoked by the Prosperity Gospel.

(Jesus was not a historical figure. He was originally a figure in heaven. Now let me really blow your mind: Washington also wasn’t a historical figure. He was originally the devil in hell! I’m joking of course, shut up, I need gallows humor to not be depressed by this shit. The bit about Jesus was not a joke, however.)

USA! USA! USA!

George Washington was a slave owning pedophile, so yeah, be wouldn't be upset with where the US is now.

It's time to stop worshipping the founding fathers.

Thomas Paine being the exception

George Washington would be super happy to see what we’ve become.

Washington was the wealthiest man in America at the time of his death. He might abhor the low rent crassness of this particular iteration of benediction. But I don't think he'd mind the 250 years of dogmatic ass-kissing that brought us to this moment.

Dude would be quite happy to hear his face is on money and his name is branded into the country he helped plunder, from sea to shining sea.

According to his will, he also owned 124 slaves at the time of his death.

[–] motor_spirit@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

It's so fucking jarring to consider such a thing. Imagine being told somebody you know owned over 100 other humans just like yourself and that being factual.

I didn't realize pragerU was a fucking non-profit... They are so fucking gross

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago

That just means that the organization doesn’t profit. The people working there are making a killing.

I mean, we don't have any particular reason to doubt that a young carpenter from Bethlehem named Yeshua decided one day that he was the son of god and started preaching in the streets and eventualy cobbled together a small following of various misfits. Anything beyond that of course is implausible, to say the least.

Frankly, that much is better attested in the record than most individuals. Yes, with extraordinary claims comes extraordinary scrutiny, but we lose the plot a bit if we hold religious figures to a higher standard for historical verification of their mere existence because their particular creepy cult happened to be the one that had a moment, got entrenched, and inspired millennia of assholes via survivorship bias.

I thought there was some evidence that the story of Jesus may have been written as Roman propaganda.

Jesus was a legitimate historical figure. There are a number of accounts of people contemporary to him who knew him personally. Some of the overarching details of his life are uncertain, but 2 things are mostly universally agreed upon as historical fact.

  1. He was baptized by John the Baptist.
  2. He was crucified in or around Jerusalem during the Governorship of Pontius Pilate.

Those two things are the only things about him that hold a high degree of certainty as historical fact. Everything else is subject to a fair degree of skepticism.

[–] GojuRyu@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Which accounts are those? I haven’t heard of any accounts that aren’t separated by at least a few decades, so I’m unsure if I’ve missed earlier accounts or if I misunderstood what you meant with contemporary with him.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

"Many details of?" Sure, but there are near-contemporary accounts of an itinerant preacher by that name who assembled a following and got himself executed. One of things they don't mention is that this sort of thing was pretty common, specifically apocalyptic preachers in Judea who were not fans of the existing political status quo. Monty Python's Life of Brian is more correct in its vibes than one might imagine.

See if any of the founding fathers’ estates will sue.

Just pump out more AI video of the founding fathers saying countering arguments. Maybe quotes from the constitution that counter things that the Trump admin is saying or doing.

You fight fire with fire at this point. There is no decorum or any legal repercussions.

Two wrongs stiil dont make a right.

I was convinced that Jesus was a real person when I found out the Romans wrote about him. Of course, I'm an atheist.
