For me it's been communities like /r/buildapc, /r/buildapcforme, /r/buildapcsales, /r/gamedeals, and /r/consoledeals have been useful throughout the years.

DIY music making using DAWs (digital audio workstations). My personal preference being Reaper for its flexibility and low cost.

lemmy.studio might be of interest? That instance is still growing for sure!

Scuba diving! 🤿

Or just diving / water sports in general (although probably more thought should go into picking the name...). Specifically scuba is probably too niche to make an active community at this point in time, but it feels a little out of place in a more general sports community.

r/scuba was always a fun place to go and see people's cool videos of marine life and underwater selfies, as well as being a good place to ask questions and discuss gear.

Travel-focused communities would be lovely, akin to r/travel and r/solotravel among others.

  • More vinyl record collector communities. Always loved finding new music and seeing what interesting things people are picking up.
  • Communities for specific, niche genres of music. Synthwave, mallcore, house music, jazz, etc.
  • Archery! Love seeing the kind of things people are shooting, how people are shooting, getting advice, giving advice and learning new things about the sport.
  • Geographically centered communities. I like having communities for my local state and cities to see what's going on in the area. Way more informative than local news.

I’ve setup an instance focused on some niche topics and hobbies, there’s much there yet but here they are if anyone wants!

Videos/mealtimevideos was a big thing for me. They kept me entertained while I ate lunch, lol.

Hmmm ...

Archery Motorcycles Old Photos in Real Life Spanish as a Second Language

I'm missing a lot of more specialised things, but these are pretty broad I think

Also wanted to add that a comics equivalent would be nice if there isn't one already. I doubt many of the longtime artists would migrate fully, but it would at least be another platform that could get them greater reach.

Any and all of the sports subreddits. Nothing brings more user engagement (positive and negative) than game threads for sporting events. The sooner we can get a thriving sports community going, the faster Lemmy or any social media app will grow.

I'd love to see communities about:

  • crafting (fibre crafts like knitting and spinning in particular)
  • classical music
  • photography
  • Latin
  • history (r/askhistorians?)
  • cats
  • art
  • cooking
  • writing
  • Star Trek
  • menopause
  • AuDHD
  • birdwatching
  • gardening
  • reading

A knitting and crochet community, regardless if its separated or together as a unified fiber arts community would be a godsend

[–] otsana@lemmy.one 1 points 2 years ago

I found !knitting@lemmy.world trying to get off the ground. (hope I got that link formatting right)

[–] leftylibra@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Glad to report that r/menopause has moved to c/menopause@lemmy.world

[–] fiberandcolor@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago
