BOSTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Friday granted the Trump administration’s emergency appeal to temporarily block a court order to fully fund SNAP food aid payments amid the government shutdown.

A judge had given the Republican administration until Friday to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But the administration asked the appeals court to suspend any court orders requiring it to spend more money than is available in a contingency fund, and instead allow it to continue with planned partial SNAP payments for the month.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

BOSTON (AP) — Residents in some U.S. states began to receive their full SNAP food aid Friday as an appeals court left in place, for now, an order requiring President Donald Trump’s administration to fund the monthly benefits amid a U.S. government shutdown.

Usually emergency orders are to help people

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

Lol! The citizens united decision should have shown you that capital>>people.

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

At the very least to keep the status quo and mitigate irreversible harm. This seems like an order to push forward the agenda of their god king and barrel through with the harm.

And now we have Democrats talking about bills to reopen with a vote in ACA in December. I doubt SNAP will even come back to fill strength if the government opens back up

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 16 points 2 days ago

The cruelty is the point!

[–] Sundiata@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago

Supreme Court issues emergency order...

me: YESSS, FINALLY!!!!

...to block full SNAP food aid payments

me: motherfucking goddamnit.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Could you imagine arguing in FAVOR of denying people food? What has happened to this world?

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

The argument is that they can't pay because the democrats want to also maintain the evil bad socialist disastrous healthcare system. Instead of paying the insurance companies through Obamacare, we should give people the money directly ~~so healthcare providers can gouge the fuck out of prices even more effectively~~.

Also, remember that communism is evil and that the islamists and marxists are now emboldened by the brown guy being elected in NY. And while we're at it, isn't this whole "waiting for the government to pay for your food" thing socialism anyway? Look where voting Dem got you!

Really, this shutdown is what the dems wanted. They're the bad guys who don't want people to have food!

Now excuse me while I try to wash off the disgusting feeling this dive into their cesspools has left me with. It probably won't work, but I have to try.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 295 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Emergency. To stop citizens from getting food.

This is what you voted for republikkkans. I sure as shit hope you enjoy what you've done. Have a glass of water for dinner.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 64 points 3 days ago

Anything they can do to lower taxes for people with more money than God.

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 34 points 3 days ago (1 children)

One thing I did not see coming was the judge who put the ruling out. I would have guessed Roberts or basically any one of 6 possible choices other than Brown.

The Government's argument, I shit you not, "Congress has not given explicit permission to do this."

Invade cities with ICE, bomb boats in the body of water formerly know as the Gulf of Mexico, literally start a war with a sovereign nation, tariff the fuck out of everyone... BUT OH NO! Feeding kids, that's Executive overreach.

Man, I'm not religious, but holy fuck I really do hope there is a hell.

It’s going to be wild to see 1890’s bombings in the 2020’s. Remember what happened when anarchists used to bomb government officials? I expect the same to happen when parents start losing their children. To starvation.

I’m just making an assessment. Not calling for it or saying it should happen.

[–] RudeDuner@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Also, the bombs can fly now.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

They fly now!?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

OH! NO!. There are americans that might not go hungry. Quick uncle justice thomas summon the supreme court action force to stop this travesty! Everyone should do searche google about if historically starving populaces have ever killed their leaders or judges till its the top search on google.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's even worse than that. They did it not because it's unconstitutional in any way but because they felt that it was dangerous to cause more debt by using these funds which were specifically set aside for this exact purpose.

They're not even pretending anymore.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Funny how debt becomes a thing to care about only when it serves the purpose of taking literal food out of the literal mouths of the poor.

[–] Sundiata@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

meanwhile we continue to stuff argentina and israel's mouth full of money.

[–] mycatscool@lemmy.world 106 points 4 days ago (9 children)

Americans should be rioting already. There seems to be no end to the corruption and madness of their sham Supreme Court and fascist government. What will it take?

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 64 points 4 days ago (2 children)

"I'm okay taking a few hits. They gotta weed out the leeches who just drain the system" <- actual reasoning I've heard.

When half the country is willing to starve to death and armed to the teeth, the other half is not quick to riot and provoke them

Soon. When the safety nets start failing.

However, Trump will likely be removed by his own people in a matter of months, and Republicans will pretend to be victims of an elaborate scheme. It'll probably work too, because anyone who is a supporter of Republicans today is a literal moron, or psychopath.

Almost every revolution in history was caused by people that got too hungry while rich people were oblivious.

Give it a bit more time.

We are officially in the "Let them eat cake" stage of this MAGA government. Enormous ballrooms, foreign jet bribes, bailouts for foreign dictators, and now they're going to deliberately starve poor people because they think it will make people vote for them.

When we take back this government, this will be the exact reason that there should be at least three seats added to the Supreme Court, and Clarence Thomas should be impeached, prosecuted and imprisoned, along with his treasonous bulldog wife.

They are actively STARVING their own citizens! There will be no punishment too severe for these monsters.

Oh GOD!! Quick somebody stop kids from eating so Trump can have more women in martini glasses!!!

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Weird definition of “emergency.”

Let’s starve the supremes for a month and see what’s an emergency.

[–] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 33 points 3 days ago

America! Fuck yeah! This is winning! Fuck the poor!

Oh. And Trump is a pedophile and most likely human trafficker. In addition to his other felonies and rape charges. He also sleeps in meetings and has no idea who he pardons. Clearly he is sundowning. But hey, the GOP is here to protect all your diddlers and white collar criminals. They really care.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 70 points 4 days ago (8 children)

So this is how you know you're the fucking bad guys, if any MAGAs are lurking around here.

They are either starving people for leverage, or starving people out of malice. That's it. Those are your only options.

If you support a government that starves people for leverage, you're a fucking asshole.

If you support a government that starves people out of malice, you're a fucking asshole, and you're a complete failure of a human being.

I'm very, VERY thankful Trump and MAGA are finally collapsing. 3 months from today Trump will not be the president. 3 years from now, most of these people will be dead or in prison.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 38 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I admire your optimism, and sincerely hope you’re right.

I’m so tired of this evil clown show.

WWJD? Oh yeah, exactly this, and probably sign a few 155mm shells destined to create more democracy in the Middle East.

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 days ago

First, if have you try an imagine being the type of person that would vote for someone that would hold food as hostage in an effort to extort the government into agreeing to stop paying for healthcare…

And then I’d have you imagine the type of person that would chose to not voting against it.

Got it?

Great! Now you’ll never again have to wonder how we got here.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

Next level evilness.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"Emergency"

More like vetoing the actual emergency order.

I was baffled reading elsewhere today that Justice Jackson did it, due to her jurisdiction or something. That's a Biden appointee. I'm sure there's some procedural bullshit, but still... I am lost.

Edit: yup, it's in OP's article too.

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued an order late Friday pausing the requirement

Biden-appointed Supreme Court Justice is the one who took the action. I seriously would love more info from her.

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Its almost like the monopoly on power transcends party lines. We need to come together and organize as the people. We are more alike than different.

[–] BingBong@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

Took me a bit to dredge this up but it has the reasoning.

Once all this bullshit is finally over with, we need a constitutional amendment banning the fucking shadow docket this is insane

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 14 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I know the news keeps saying they were going hard against the tariffs. I have zero doubt they will do anything but capitulate tonight him again; it’s why they are there.

If every paper in the U.S. and news channel isn't saying "President Donald Trump orders ~1/8 of Americans to go hungry!". They should should face enough backlash that they should be off the air or fear they will be burned down for lying to the public.

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

This is like fucking pennies, dude. Fuck off with this shit. Go ride your Qatari jet and contract with Raytheon and approve another massive defenses (excuse me, War) budget
