The tires floating around in our bins of Lego for decades called to me. They're so cool looking.
Yes! I had one of those in the early eighties. It was awesome.

Can confirm, this was one of the best sets I ever had.
Ohhhh shiiiii… I think I had this one too! Haven’t thought about this in literal decades! 😍
Phenomenal. I love the classic Technic sets - the modern ones just seem so unimaginative with all of the custom parts, and don't get me started on the new beams.
That set was from just before I got into Technic, so I never had the pleasure of making it, but now I need to find the parts I don't have in inventory and fix that.
It was a pleasure to build, so I'm looking to buy the 8860 test car chassis now that I'm aware of it. Hopefully prices are reasonable, especially since I don't need box or instructions - I just want to build and see the set IRL!
And this set came with a complete alt build for a jeep:

It had space to install the electric motor in the back to drive the wheels.
hell yeah that is slick. I've never built the second instructions, it's really cool to see the pictures. Thanks for sharing!
Very nice, I remember that being on the Christmas list.
Oh that brings back a lot of souvenirs!! Thank you!
That's a classic awesome set. I only ever had two technic sets. The first was the smaller version of what you have, so the only technic ability was steering. Then later I got a fork lift track that used air pneumatics to operate the lifting forks at the front.
Then I got annoyed as my mum chucked it all in the big box my other "normal" Lego was in, and I wanted to keep them separate.
However, I remember using those really long single stud red beams to build the chassis for an ECTO1 I built. They were often the base for my larger builds.
Man, I remember that forklift set - I didn't end up getting any of the pneumatic stuff, but it's so cool.
Mixing up sets with our general Lego was one of my mom's specialities and how 8865 disappeared in the first place.
I'm considering which of my childhood sets to attempt a resurrection from my tubs of Lego next - pirate or castle (I think Knight's Castle is in there), or there was a fire station with a garage door, a raceway with a bunch of cars, I also vaguely remember a Shell gas station.
Very nice build!!
