Image is of the Herðubreið tuya in northeast Iceland, formed when ice sheets covered Iceland thousands of years ago. It's not really relevant to the Grindavik situation but I think they look neat. The title also doesn't make much sense but I saw the pun and took it.

Off in Iceland, different kinds of tunnels are causing problems. Underneath the town of Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, not far from the capital of Reykjavik, tens of thousands of earthquakes are portending the movement of magma in tunnels underneath the peninsula, which could breach the surface and cause an eruption. The 4000 residents of the town have been evacuated as the magma has risen to less than a kilometer below the surface.^TRG^

Icelandic volcanism is pretty fascinating, with the country sitting on the mid-Atlantic ridge, the birthing line of new oceanic crustal rock running right down the Atlantic ocean for many thousands of kilometers, as well as a hotspot, an upwelling of mantle material of debated origin which also feeds otherwise-inexplicable volcanism in the middle of tectonic plates, like Yellowstone and Hawaii.

An additional factor here is the presence of glaciers. When a volcano erupts underneath a glacier, the melting water cools the lava rapidly, causing features usually seen in volcanoes that erupt under the sea like pillow basalts, but also unique features like tuyas, which are steep-sided but flat-topped volcanoes. The rapid melting of water can also cause glacial floods called jökulhlaups.

Icelandic volcanoes have had significant regional and even global impacts in the past. In 2010, the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which was a volcano covered by an ice cap, erupted and the ash cloud spread across Europe, causing airline disruption for about a month which caused nearly $2 billion in total losses for airline companies - though this seems pretty quaint compared to the pandemic's impact on airlines in retrospect. Back in the 1780s, the Laki volcano killed a quarter of the Icelandic population due to sulphur dioxide causing massive crop failure and cattle death. This eruption's impacts spread to Europe and beyond, causing notable worldwide temperature drops and thus crop failures and may well have been a contributing factor to the outbreak of the French Revolution, which obviously heralded the death of the feudal order and the eventual primacy of capitalism in its place. That being said, any eruption at Grindavik is very probably not going to have any significant worldwide impacts - there are over a hundred volcanoes already in Iceland, and regular climate change is doing a great job at causing mayhem right now anyway. It's also still possible that there won't be an eruption at all, at least not in the short to medium term.

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week's discussion post.

Abu Obeida:

In the name of God, most benelovent, most merciful. "So fight them, that God may punish them by your hands & put them to shame and grant you victory over them and soothe the hearts of a faithful people" [Qur'an 9:14]

Praise be to God, Lord of the universe who wrote: "I shall prevail, I and My messengers" [58:21], and blessings be upon our prophet, the mujahid, the martyr, and upon his kin and companions and those who fought his jihad thereafter. Oh sons of our mighty people, you who face the machine of murder and terror with immense faith; oh people of our Arab & Islamic Ummah & its mujahideen, oh free people of the world...

After 38 days since the beginning of Al-Aqsa Flood, our warriors continue to confront the intruding vehicles and forces of this enemy in the city of Gaza and Beit Hanoun on multiple axes, conducting operations against the enemy, destroying his tanks and vehicles. Attacking buildings his troops fortify in, and smashing the the gatherings of his soldiers, with mortars and guided missiles, causing great injuries and casualties in their ranks. Our warriors destroyed, partially or fully, 20 vehicles in the past 48 hours, between tanks & APCs. The invading forces shall remain, every step they take, under the fire of our fighters. The deeper they intrude, the worse the price they shall pay.

The sick dreams of the Zionist war-leaders, about ending our resistance in Gaza, are but an attempt to escape their resounding defeat and the bitter reality that they live. They, whose faces are covered in soot that is as black as the political and military fate that awaits them. We remind these delusional leaders that Isaac Shamir had the same ambitions, as did Rabin, who wished to wake up and find Gaza swallowed by the sea - and this was a time in which our fighters were but dozens, with light arms. Sharon, too, who promised to end the Intifada in but 100 days. These, all, have gone to the garbage heap of history with nothing but a record of slaughtering innocents - and our resistance remained, and grew greatly in might. You, murderers, will not be luckier than they were, and you will achieve nothing but disappointment and downall, by the will of God.

Our faith is absolute, in God's victory, and the justice of our struggle and the holiness of our battle, the Mother of Battles - but this does not absolve every member of our Ummah from their duty towards this war. The hysteria that the occupation and their masters live in, for fear of the movement of the resistance forces in our Ummah, is proof that this is a true nightmare for them. We see your actions, and the extent of its effect and the chaos it creates in the Zionist aggressor. Our martyrs, who ascend every hour in Gaza, shall be enshrined in history as the mightiest of martyrs in the holiest of battles. Blessed are you, our people and fighters, for this great honour. Each unmoving witness to the pain of our people shall be hounded by shame and disgrace. Under God there is only what God decrees, and the faith of our people, and their messages of loyalty and support from beneath the rubble, are the best evidence of their greatness and pride, and of their entitlement to the medal of honour in defense of the path of our prophet, and within the struggle in our holy and blessed land.

Victory is but patience for an hour, and God always prevails in His purpose, though most people do not realize it [12:21]. This is jihad: it is martyrdom or victory, and God's peace, mercy and blessings be upon you.

Ecologist: The peasant food web

I don't really have a strong take on this, but I think it raises some interesting points. While I am obviously pro-vegan, at the end of the day, the choice between vegetables harvested by slaves 8000 miles away and factory-farmed animal meat is no choice at all, so regardless we'd need to abolish the profit motive to actually achieve any of this, but agrarian localism is an attractive idea in that post-revolutionary context.

In Saying NO, I argue for low-energy input, job-rich, local agricultures – what I call ‘agrarian localism’, and others refer to as ‘the peasant food web’. Ultimately, this goes hand in hand with a less urbanised world than now. I see this not as cruel fantasy but the most benign reality now achievable.

...

The spectre of ‘mass death’ haunts arguments for ruralism. Often, the underlying idea is that the peasant food web simply can’t produce enough food compared to modern industrial methods. This isn’t well supported by the evidence.

There’s currently a dispute in the research literature concerning the proportion of all food globally produced by the peasant food web, but even the low-end estimates concede that per hectare productivities are higher than in the industrial system.

One recent study found that farms up to 10ha in size are currently producing 55 per cent of the food supply calorically on 40 per cent of the agricultural land, consistent with the well-established ‘inverse productivity’ relationship with farm size. The underlying complexities are numerous, but it’s not true on the face of it that small-scale local farming can’t feed the world.

Food analyst Jim Thomas has shown that it’s not quite as difficult to transition the rest of the global food economy towards local peasant food webs as it might seem from George’s claim that the average minimum distance the world’s people can be supplied with staple foods is 2,200km. But it is difficult. All the more reason to get on with it.

Contrary to claims about the need to produce more food at higher yields to combat hunger (claims persuasively critiqued long ago by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen), the reality of the present industrial food chain is the overproduction of low-price food at high cost to people and nature.

Rybar video summary of the events of November 11-13

https://streamable.com/rmtcan

spoiler❗️🇮🇱🇵🇸🎞 Chronicles of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: November 11-13, 2023

The Israel Defense Forces have completed an operation to blockade Gaza City. They advanced along the al-Rashid coast road in the north and along the valley in Wadi Gaza, south of the city. In the north, the Israelis made progress in the al-Shati camp. On the western border of Gaza, Israel Defense Forces units successfully took control of the area near Al-Quds and Al-Shifa hospitals and approached al-Wafa Hospital in the Tell al-Hawa neighborhood. It is clear that the Israelis have transitioned from encircling the city to conducting raids within its limits.

At the same time, the satellite towns in Gaza have not yet been captured. Fighting continues fiercely in Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya in the north of the enclave. The urban fighting began with intensive bombardment by the Israeli Air Force.

Amidst the bombardment and ongoing fighting, the Israelis have opened humanitarian corridors along the main al-Rashid and Salah al-Din roads on a daily basis. This has resulted in the population being forced out of the enclave's capital, while the IDF tries to avoid responsibility for civilian deaths by pointing to the possibility of rescue.

Despite the events in the Gaza Strip, Israeli security forces continue their daily raids in the West Bank. The situation is gradually escalating on Israel's northern borders, with increased shelling by Lebanon's Hezbollah. Pro-Iranian groups from other territories are also active. For instance, the Yemeni Houthis recently attempted to attack Israel with rockets and drones. However, Saudi air defense systems shot down the launched missiles over the Red Sea. On Saturday, strikes were launched from Syrian territory on the southern part of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. In response, the Israeli Air Force targeted Syrian localities in the province of Daraa.

Rybar video summary 16-17

https://streamable.com/ct23q1

spoiler❗️🇮🇱🇵🇸🎞 Israeli-Palestinian conflict chronicles: November 16-17, 2023

▪️ The Israeli army continues to clear positions around Gaza. Palestinian groups in the northern outskirts periodically counterattack, using anti-tank guided missiles and small arms against the IDF.

▪️ To the south, near the Mediterranean coast, the IDF has cleared the vicinity of Al-Shifa Hospital. The hospital itself has been used as a military stronghold, and Israeli media has provided evidence of Hamas' use of the facility.

▪️ Clashes are also occurring near Al-Wafa Hospital to the east. Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants are attacking Israeli equipment from the flanks, causing harm to the IDF but failing to regain control of territory.

▪️ Local Palestinian sources, although unconfirmed, are reporting that the IDF has allegedly broken through towards the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital. With the northern part of the enclave already sealed off, such sorties are a logical continuation of the operation.

▪️ Meanwhile, raids and mass clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians continue throughout the West Bank. The most violent clashes are happening in Jenin Camp, Nablus, Tulkarm, Hebron, and Qalqilya.

▪️ In the northern area, Hezbollah militants and the IDF are exchanging strikes along the entire Israeli-Lebanese border. Over the past two days, Hezbollah has attacked IDF strongholds and Israeli settlements at least 15 times, resulting in several injured soldiers.

▪️ At night, the Israel Defense Forces launched rocket strikes on the southern suburbs of Damascus. Some of the missiles were intercepted, but others hit their intended targets.

Rybar Summary of November 18, 2023:

spoiler❗️🇮🇱🇵🇸 Escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone - events leading up to November 18, 2023

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are currently conducting operations in the Gaza Strip. Fighting is taking place in the northern regions of Gaza, including Jabaliya, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun. While there have been no significant changes to the front line, hostilities have not ceased. Instead, the IDF is preparing for further urban development.

Clashes between Hezbollah and the IDF also persist along the northern border. Lebanese forces have launched attacks on border posts using anti-tank systems and mortars. In response, the Israelis have carried out numerous attacks in the southern regions of Lebanon.

In the West Bank, mass arrests and clashes with Israeli security forces continue. Several doctors from the Ibn Sina hospital in Jenin have been detained, and detentions in Tulkarm and Hebron have escalated into clashes.
