On the 7th of january in 1919, the "Semana Trágica" began in Argentina when police attacked striking metalworkers in Buenos Aires, killing five, after workers set the police chief's car on fire. The city was quickly placed under martial law.

The "Semana Trágica" (Tragic Week in English, not to be confused with the Spanish Tragic Week) was the violent supression of a general workers' uprising, beginning with the attack on January 7th. In addition to the actions of the police and military, right-wing vigilantes launched pogroms against the city's Jews, many of whom were not involved, in order to suppress the rebellion.

The conflict began as a strike at the Vasena metal works, an English Argentine-owned plant in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. On January 7th, workers overturned and set fire to the car of the police chief Elpidio González. Militant workers also shot and killed the commander of the Army detachment protecting González. Following this, police attacked, killing five workers and wounding twenty more.

On the same day, maritime workers of the port of Buenos Aires voted in favor of a general strike for better hours and wages. After the police attack at Vasena, a waterfront strike began: all ship movements, and all loading and unloading, came to a halt.

Rioting soon spread throughout Buenos Aires, and workers battled with both state and right-wing paramilitary forces. Police utilized members of the far-right Argentine "Patriotic League", who targeted the city's working class Russian Jewish population, which they associated with the rebellion, beating and murdering many uninvolved civilians.

On the 11th, the city was placed under martial law, and the military restored control over the city over the next several days. Estimates of the death toll range from between 141 to over 700. The United States embassy reported that 1,500 people were killed in total, "mostly Russians and generally Jews"

I just saw the worst movie adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream ever made. It's set in the modern day, but that's not at all what I hate about it. I actually kinda like Shakespeare adaptations that vary up the time and place. No, what I hate are the other, for lack of a better term, artistic choices.

First, Bottom's head was indeed changed to that of an ass - but not ass in the donkey sense. Ass in the human posterior sense. Yes, you're looking at a mercifully-not-too-detailed butt for a big chunk of the run time.

But the worst culprit is about 15 minutes in. An attempt at a Shakespeare meta-joke that's more irritating than funny. Bottom is at a college, and looking for a specific classroom. He pokes his head into a dark classroom, and sees a man doing the steepled-fingers thing while sitting and watching an old black-and-white adaptation of Midsummer being projected from filmstock. He's wearing the most stereotypical film-school outfit ever, everything black including the turtleneck shirt. Red rimmed glasses.

Bottom points to his printed class schedule and nervously asks the man, "Uh, 2-B?"

The man stands up, and says in a highly refined but not unfriendly manner of speech...

"Not 2-B."

Typed a basic real analysis problem into chatgpt. Basically everything in the solution was wrong. At one point it opened up the proof that set is closed with the definition of an open set and proceeded to use that definition wrong.

"well the baby couldn't say granny but they could say goopso so now the whole family calls me that"

My sibling in Christ, they are developing language. Just wait and keep teaching them, you do not have to resign yourself to a lifetime of this misery

wrong, the child will learn language anyways and goopso is a fun unique family name

sometimes i wonder if i should have just tried to work things out with my partner. i look at the relationships around me and its really clear no one is a perfect 1:1 fit for you and there's no such thing as a relationship that's friction-free. and they were a special person in a lot of ways and we did share a real emotional and intellectual bond. but we also had pretty much all the same problems from the very start of the relationship which i didn't really feel much progress on and they didn't really seem like they could hear my needs to the extent they claimed, would often shut them down and get dismissive. and we'd gotten to a point where feeling anxious and tense around her had become the default, which is really not what you want in a relationship. idk. communing with the other is hard folxxx. sometimes comparably hard to the bottomless well of loneliness that is the alternative.

What if we made weird misogynists and people who think fictional characters actually exist fight over an instagram poll? Wouldn't that be funny?
