c/vocabulary@reddthat.com: Vocabulary

Welcome to Vocabulary, a cozy corner for word lovers, learners, and creative thinkers.

Here we explore language not just through definitions, but through connections. Share memes, art, music, and cultural moments that bring words to life, like how a K-pop song captures the feeling of vocabulary word or how a public figure perfectly embodies vocab word.

Discuss etymology, revive old words, invent new ones, or show how language shapes thought. Whether you’re a linguist, a casual word enjoyer, or just someone who loves discovering the right word at the right time, you’re in good company here.

c/NoWireHangers@sh.itjust.works: Toxic family stories

Many of us have stories of incredibly toxic family members we’d like to share. The motivation doesn’t matter. Share your stories for comedy, therapy, screaming into the void, etc.

A few simple rules:

  • First names are fine, but try not to get more specific than that. We don’t need to know WHO these people are, just WHAT they said or did.
  • It doesn’t have to be your story but if it’s someone else’s, please cite your source. Don’t steal other people’s drama.
  • If them threatening someone is part of the story you can tell that. If you are threatening someone in the comments or your post, that’s an entirely different thing we will not excuse.
  • This is not a place of AI-generated content. That’s allowed to exist elsewhere but not here. Unless chatGPT starts bitching about Alan Turing it’s going to be removed.

c/SlowLibrarianship@chirp.social: SlowLibrarianship

Slow Librarianship is a practice that evolved in response to academic hustle culture but applies to all areas of library work. Julia Glassman coined the term in 2017, and Meredith Farkas, inspired by Julia’s work, has been speaking and writing on the topic since. The term grew at the same time as other social movements, largely in the context of the pandemic. The core idea of valuing quality over quantity is timeless and transcends states of emergency. These values are echoed in societal movements for a better mental health response in workplace culture and within libraries specifically push back against classist notions of service and emotionally- and economically-damaging vocational awe.
