So many enlightened centrists both-sidesing in this thread.

I don't think a lot of westerners realize how highly propagandized and pro-colonialist their media is.

The US deemed the African National Congress (ANC, the main group resisting apartheid south africa) a terrorist group just like they do hamas now, and only removed Mandela from the US terrorist watchlist in 2008.

US media is saying all the same things about Palestine's resistance that they did in the 80s w/ to south african apartheid.

This is correct, the US takes the threat of a good example very seriously, and has meddled in every single attempt at building any state, not only communist ones, that refuse to be controlled by US capitalists.

What does your both-sidesing accomplish here? Are you trying to say that Palestine's resistance to colonialism isn't justified?

If so, then you're doing this gandhi quote, but for the palestinian resistance.

Truly one of the best movies ever made.

I remember watching a documentary about it, and I think even tetris was based on one of those physical puzzle games with the same pieces, that you had to fit correctly into a square.

Its the "pull up the ladder" phenomenon. You even see it in places you wouldn't expect, like US workers opposing student loan forgiveness proposals because they had to pay, and want to make damn sure everyone else has to go through the pain that they did.

The brits set up a giant military garrison in northern Ireland called the Plantation of Ulster in the 1600s, and used it to turn nearly the entire population of Ireland into slaves, and project english military might onto Ireland and colonize it for hundreds of years. They have always labelled resistance to their imperialist project as "terrorism".

The british army should absolutely be the ones labelled as terrorists, not the ones opposing them.

Israel and its settler garrison are carrying out the standard colonialist formula throughout history (epitomized by the US model in its conquest) : eviction and genocide of the indigenous inhabitants, and theft of their lands.

This is defended under many premises, a "religious" calling, a "civilizing" venture (with orientalist undertones), and many others, but the goal is the same as all imperialist ventures: theft of land, labor, and natural resources. People from around the world, no matter how rich or poor, are invited to join in this colonial project, and many do, because of the promise of cheap land.

Predictably, Israel calls anyone who opposes this genocide as "terrorists", even though by all reasonable definition of terrorism, its the settler garrison who are the real terrorists: murdering innocent civilians, stealing their towns, and erasing the old names. In Palestine, the largest of this event was called the Nakba, whereas in the US, the entire 1800s was a westward-expanding colonial war defeating hundreds of native tribes and killing anyone who resisted.

The US is the primary supporter of this project, because Israel is for them, a giant, unsinkable aircraft carrier / military base in the middle east, which can be used to project western military power on the resource-rich middle east. As Joe Biden said: "If Israel didn't exist, it would be necessary for the US to invent one herself."

I suggest watching this video, as its the best short introduction: How Palestine became Colonized.

This is the only map I can find where Israel disagrees with the US.

They don't test their weapons on people, like the US does:

  • Between 1946 and 1958, the US tested 23 nuclear devices at Bikini Atoll, using the native islanders and their land as guinea pigs for the effects of nuclear fallout. Significant fallout caused widespread radiological contamination in the area, and killed many islanders. A survivor stated, "What the Americans did was no accident. They came here and destroyed our land. They came to test the effects of a nuclear bomb on us. It was no accident." Many of the islanders exposed were brought to the US Argonne National laboratory, to study the effects. Afterwards the islands proved unsuitable to sustaining life, resulting in starvation and requiring the residents to receive ongoing aid. Virtually all of the inhabitants showed acute symptoms of radiation syndrome, many developing thyroid cancers, Leukimia, miscarriages, stillborn and "jellyfish babies" (highly deformed) along with symptoms like hair falling out, and diahrrea. A handful were brought to the US for medical research and later returned, while others were evacuated to neighboring Islands. The US under LBJ prematurely returned the majority returned 3 years later, to further test how human beings absorb radiation from their food and environment. The islanders pleaded with the US to move them away from the islands, as it became clear that their children were developing deformities and radiation sickness. Radion levels were still unacceptable. The United States later paid the islanders and their descendants 25 million in compensation for damage caused by the nuclear testing program. A 2016 investigation found radiation levels on Bikini Atoll as high as 639 mrem yr−1, well above the established safety standard threshold for habitation of 100 mrem yr−1. Similar tests occurred elsewhere in the Marshall Islands during this time period. Due to the destruction of natural wealth, Kwajalein Atoll's military installation and dislocation, the majority of natives currently live in extreme poverty, making less than 1$ a day. Those that have jobs, mostly work at the US military installation and resorts. Much of this is detailed in the documentary, The Coming War on China (2016). 1,2

JULY 25, 2024

Statement by Vice President Kamala Harris

Yesterday, at Union Station in Washington, D.C. we saw despicable acts by unpatriotic protestors and dangerous hate-fueled rhetoric.

I condemn any individuals associating with the brutal terrorist organization Hamas, which has vowed to annihilate the State of Israel and kill Jews. Pro-Hamas graffiti and rhetoric is abhorrent and we must not tolerate it in our nation.

I condemn the burning of the American flag. That flag is a symbol of our highest ideals as a nation and represents the promise of America. It should never be desecrated in that way.

I support the right to peacefully protest, but let’s be clear: Antisemitism, hate and violence of any kind have no place in our nation.

Do you keep lists of your favorite things, such as movies, books, recipes, or music albums? You might keep list(s) that looks like this:

  • Network (1976)
  • Lone Star (1996)
  • Devils (1971)
  • The Seventh Seal (1957)
  • ... Many more films

But how do you rank these?

You might be tempted to order them by preference, but this could quickly get overwhelming for long lists.

A much easier method is to use pairwise comparisons, which shows you single head-to-head pairs, and has you choose which one you like best.

After doing a small number of these matchups, Rank-My-Favs can confidently create a ranked list for you.

Under the hood, Rank-My-Favs uses the advanced Glicko rating system, to determine how many matches are necessary, and for ranking.

This would entail:

  • Pulling in the ClearUrls rules as a git submodule.
  • Reading / transforming the json there into Rust structs.
  • Creating a Rust crate that runs a .clean(input_url) -> String
