If you're running a car (with a turbo) around an on-road circuit, I get that you're not constantly switching between throttle and braking the way you are in rally. But you still have zones of long deceleration where you lose a lot of your proverbial steam. When you're inevitably ready to get back on the gas, wouldn't you ideally want that turbo to be all spooled-up already and delivering boost instantly as opposed to building it up organically again?

Totally appreciate that the likely answer to any question that starts with "Why don't" or "Why isn't" is because the negatives outweigh the positives. I guess I'm just wondering more specifically what those negatives are when it comes to racing disciplines outside of rally. And I don't need to ask/ get into why it isn't a common feature on production cars that drive civilian roads...mpg, maintenance, longevity, etc.

Tried doing some general searching and the only answer that felt significantly satisfactory is that turbo-lag is becoming less and less of a thing with overall/ other advancements in automotive engineering. Fair enough, if that's the main reason.

This might be the first time ever the Indy 500 pace car had more power than cars it's pacing - over 250 more horsepower.

For example, I was absolutely shocked that the new WRX in Canada doesnt have TPMS, but does in the US.

Or cars in Germany not having remote start.

Living in the US, where we have a lot of regulations that require things like TPMS, or backup cameras, it is weird to see a country so close to us just not coming standard with TPMS.

Around a month ago the 35 year smog exemption was placed in suspense while the appropriations committee spent more time on it. On Friday it successfully made it out of the appropriations committee, and should (hopefully) get a full vote by the CA senate.

But in the appropriations committee they made some modifications that make it somewhat less useful. The important part of the current amended text now reads:

(c)  For purposes of subdivision (a), a collector motor vehicle, as defined in Section 259 of the Vehicle Code, is exempt from those portions of the test required by subdivision (f) of Section 44012 if the collector motor vehicle meets all of the following criteria:

  • (1) Submission of proof that the motor vehicle is insured as a collector motor vehicle, as shall be required by regulation of the bureau.
  • (2) The motor vehicle is at least 35 model years old.
  • (3) The motor vehicle complies with the exhaust emissions standards for that motor vehicle’s class and model year as prescribed by the department, and the motor vehicle passes a functional inspection of the fuel cap and a visual inspection for liquid fuel leaks.

Both (1) and (3) represent a significant modification from the previous text. It looks like you'll have to submit some paperwork to do.

(3) Makes it unclear to me what actual benefit this bill will have if it gets passed. This gives the department (DMV) significant leeway to prescribe emissions standards that could really moot the whole point of the bill. We may not have a good idea what those will be until this is actually implemented, but I'm not overwhelmingly hopeful given the history of this kind of thing.

Since the previous subject was blocked, I chose an article with a title that would’ve caused too much work for the mods, I’m doing another post about the Alpine A390. As I had some time I wrote a lengthy presentation of this new car, with a small comparison with the Porsche Macan at the end.

Alpine revealed the A390 yesterday. Described as a « sport fastback », it displays unusual proportions : 1,53m tall (5ft, 2cm/0.8in more than a BMW 5-series), 4,615m long (15.1ft, 17cm/6.7în less than a Macan), 1,885m wide (about 6.2ft).

It has 3 electric motors, available in a 400 or 470hp version delivering 650 and 808nm of torque (394 or 464 imperial hp, 479 or 596lb-ft). 0-100km/h is achieved in 4,8s and 3,9s respectively. It’s as fast as an Alpine A110 R.

Thanks to the two rear motors, Alpine Torque Vectoring allows to indepedently accelerate one of the wheels to improve agility around the corner. Alpine claims that the car is as nimble as the A110 while weighing 2.121 tons (4676lbs or around two A110s). Despite the two rear motors, it has a fairly good boot, 532l (18.79 cubic inches). However, it doesn’t have a frunk.

It’s 89kWh battery, developped with French company Verkor and assembled in Douai, allows for 190kW DC charging (15-80% in less than 25min) and 520 to 555km of range (323 to 345 miles). A 776km trip on the motorway (Paris to Marseille, 482 miles) requires two 25min stops (I guess the consumption at around 130km/h or 81mph is between 24 and 25kWh/100km or 62 miles).

The interior is partially taken from Renault’s other models, these elements are the L-shaped screens, powered by Google Automotive (one of the best in the western market), the dashboard, the door panels and the buttons. However, the materials are different and there are new decorative elements. The centre console, between the front seats, is new, as are the seats and some equipments such as the Devialet sound system. It’s available in 6 colours at launch : white, light grey, matte medium grey, black, light blue and dark blue.

Though not precisely revealed yet, prices should start at 65 000€ and end at 76 000€ (20%VAT included) or between $74,000 and $86,000. In France, the 400hp GT version is around 18 000€ cheaper than a base 360hp Macan, 21 000€ cheaper than a 408hp Macan 4 or, comparing the 470hp GTS version to the 516hp Macan 4S, 17 000€ cheaper. And it’s not even taking options the Macan might need to match the Alpine into account. The A390 is around 200kg (441lbs) lighter but has a 89 to 58km deficit in range (55 to 36 miles).

Is there an engine that exists today (4, 6, 8 cylinder) that with decent maintenance could be considered “bullet-proof”? Along the lines of Mercedes diesels of the 80s. Not regarding in the least, things like hp, torque, etc.

Cars keep getting faster & stronger, but also more complicated with all the turbos. I’m guessing there isn’t an engine as robust as the old Mercedes diesels, but if something were to come close, what would it be? I’d take a car right now that was slow if I knew it was overengineered and “bulletproof” with normal maintenance.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a64892824/toyota-moving-gr-corolla-production/

While more GR Corolla production is certainly welcome, I was surprised to see this article claiming “wait times” and high demand in the US. I test drove a GR Corolla yesterday (it’s SO FUN) - the dealer had 8 on the lot and were advertising $2.5k discounts. I wonder if this is region specific?

I really dig the looks of this car. I just wish it was a bit lower, and cheaper lol. It'll probably be a bargain second hand.
