been reading alot about old alfettas and gtvs with a bit of porsche from that era(928s,944s and 968s) and so far i've read that they either grind the gears or oil starve and grenade themselves. i haven't read much more into it other than that since theres so many but were there any cars with the front engine rear transaxle layout that were reliable enough with proper maintenance

EDIT: whats the aftermarket transaxle scene like, i rarely see videos of these transaxles from companies like pfitzner or weddle in videos or have them being used or shown in videos other than marketing material.

Its only after 2019 that record attempts have been properly regulated, mandating the full length of the track with a flying start, before that everyone settled on the 20.6km lap

Just seeing a lot of folks who were comparing times from Porsche & Mercedes for 20,600m laps against the ZR1/X and GTD, saying that the 3RS was faster and/or that e.g. it compares to the performante – to add insult to injury until now wikipedia was mixing-and-matching the short and long times.

Both could have done better but the times to compare are as follows:

  • 6:29 - AMG One
  • 6:43 - 2RS Manthey
  • 6:48 - GT Black Series
  • 6:49.275 - ZR1X
  • 6:49.328 - 992.1 3RS
  • 6:49.42 - SVJ
  • 6:50.763 - ZR1
  • 6:51.45 - 2RS non-manthey
  • 6:52.072 - GTD

...

  • 6:56.45 - Huracan Performante

Can't tell if a lot of the folks talking about a 6:40, 6:30 were discussing the shorter or the longer lap. This is also why the 7m Viper ACR lap, as impressive as it is, isn't comparable to the old or new GTD lap, its several more seconds slower comparing apples to apples.

Incredible even considering that how much of a differential the Manthey has, especially over the stock car, some of that down to the tyre (2 vs. 2R) but also had a chance to try a manthey car a good while back and its staggering how much of a difference a few changes made

And tidbit, huracan lap was perfectly legal (much to the dismay of keyboard warriors everywhere at the time) but lamborghini did shave the tires! Mercedes also needed to use a larger front splitter, than retroactively added an extendable version to the production car, not for road use. SVJ lap had a full cage and gutted interior.

But point is, none of this matters too much, they are all fantastic cars, some a bit sketchy, and are on the spectrum of unobtainable, obviously some more than others

Thank you to the one user that fixed the issue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Lostinthecode

The car is great so far! I bought a hatchback hybrid Sport 10 days ago. I had a road trip planned to the Finger Lakes this week. I drove over 500 miles with a mix of highway, country roads and small city stop and go traffic. I returned a measured at-the-gas-pump 48mpg. The hatchback cargo space is cavernous and fit all of my girlfriend’s and my luggage, antiques, and wine we purchased. The car felt competent and safe in wet weather, and fun, responsive, and sporty on dry roads. It rips a 0-60 in just about 6.5 seconds loaded for a road trip and the cabin looks refined and well thought out. A lot of people say the seats aren’t great, but I guess it’s different for everyone they were fine for us. Over all it’s the best all around daily driver I have owned and I have had a lot of cars. It’s a superb combination of refinement, efficiency, practicality, and fun for just over $30k. So far I’m loving it. My only complaint is not having wireless CarPlay so I’ll probably be purchasing an adapter moving forward. I’ll report back with more reviews and any issues I encounter. less

Savagegeese is apparently relaunching their deep-dive series into the automotive industry. As a layperson who's interested in understanding the car industry, it's cool to see such a deep look into the process of making a car.

Btw, this video is 41 minutes long. I think it's worth the watch or listen.

EDIT: This video's core subject is about developing the body structure of a car. So they discuss factors related to it like crash structures, NVH, etc.

Long story (honestly not a long article) short, Subaru's plans for a 3rd generation BRZ is under debate and going EV is a consideration, but their options are "open" so nothing is set in stone yet. The GR86 was sold in Europe for a bit, but was discontinued there due to emissions and safety regs.

The timing for an electric BRZ is also dependent on their relationship with Toyota, so getting a win-win between them is important. An "electrified powertrain" (hybrid) may be more complicated to package than going pure EV.

Also:

Subaru is currently on an all-out offensive in the family car market with a line-up that consists of the Crosstrek, Outback and Forester, as well as the new electric Uncharted, E-Outback, and updated Solterra.

Stritto said for any sports-focused models to come to Europe, these need to first perform – especially the Uncharted. “We feel very positively about Subaru enthusiasts, but we need to see how Uncharted does first,” he said.

This Review was posted by Throttle House on instagram, written by James Engelsman

"Above Toyota there is Lexus. Above Lexus there is Toyota - again - for one model only, the Century. But nipping at the heels of that, is another Luxury Mover. Or for short, the Lexus LM. On a recent UK trip, I had the distinct pleasure of driving and riding in one for hundreds of miles.

Welcome to the most wonderfully inefficient vehicle in the world.

Not the engine, that’s a little CVT-controlled 4 pot hybrid that does great mileage. No, it’s the volume that earns it that title.

Longer than the longest ID Buzz, the Lexus LM looks like it can fit a family of 12. Inside though, hidden behind that moveable and electrochromatically frosted partition, live only two seats.

It’s a disgusting waste of space. And I absolutely love it.

An almost full vehicle-width set of screens stare back at you, whilst the seat massages, the sunroofs close and the window blinds descend as you lay pretty much flat in a Japanese business class suite at 70mph.

“It feels genuinely special in here,” says one of my passengers.

The leathers and materials are a flower petal’s throw from Range Rover quality, including the weighted tables that fold out of the armrests. There’s a little fridge, of course, and a Mark Levinson sound system too. Introverts get their own AUX plug-in to the system and wireless phone charger(/warmer).

This is it, this is the new way to be carted around. All for half of the price of a Maybach GLS.

And for that price…fine, I’ll concede it’s not all perfect. The media tech already feels 20 years old (How are those giant screens not capable of Smart TV function?). The ride is good but it’s no Rolls-Royce in that department and the CVT is less than inspiring, but passengers won’t care because you can’t hear it at all in the back.

This vehicle became the envy of everyone that went near it. It is a cocoon of isolation that makes you feel like a f**king butterfly every time you emerge from it. You get out feeling genuinely spoiled and undeserving. Which apparently, North America is…? ‘Tis a shame.

I must, must bring the team to the UK to film it soon, because man, what a way to travel. If only the seats came in wool"

GM finally released the C8 Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X times this morning.

From description:

“With nothing but our own team, we took the Corvette ZR1X to the Nürburgring to test its speed on the world’s most demanding racetrack. Watch Drew Cattell, a Vehicle Dynamics Engineer, break seven minutes with a lap time of 6:49:275 through the ZR1X’s Performance Data Recorder.”
