There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

Let me start off by saying I’m not an instagram user my self but nearly everyone around me is seeing this and it’s very recent and sudden.

There have been videos on many of my friends’ instagram reel feeds that contain vulgar content like gore and death and other disgusting stuff.

I’ve asked around and out of 21 people, 12 had this happen to them, it was video after video after video of this stuff… they even seem to be getting the same videos of it.

Has this happened to anyone else? Info would be helpful. Also if you know anything about the algorithm causing this stuff to happen please don’t shy away from sharing info.

I'm looking to host a website for an organisation I run. I'm very familiar with WordPress and somewhat familiar with Drupal, but am highly technical and can learn other technologies. I do feel that a WordPress-type crm might be overkill, as I am not looking for user interaction on the site. I'm good with html, js, and css, so would not be opposed to a barebones provider.

Basically, who is everyone using, and what considerations went into that decision?

Edit: I have crossposted this question on .world, as well, but can't properly link each on the other.

Not trying to stoke fear for Americans. But I think it might be important for people that are vulnerable or at risk to start thinking about when might be a good time to find a safer place to live. Here's my list so far, curious what other people have on their list.

  • Only one party (maga/Republican) allowed
  • Public education is abolished
  • Interracial marriage is abolished
  • Use of militias to carry out official orders
  • No more term limits for elected office
  • No more freedom of the press
  • No more freedom of expression
  • Legislation without Congressional involvement
  • Extrajudicial killings of citizens becomes commonplace
  • Politicalization of the military
  • Federally enforced religious practices and teaching
  • Imprisonment of LGBTQ+ and other groups deemed "enemies within"

I want to go with my son during his winter break. Never been to any of these 2 but he really likes the beach so I’d like to take him to a proper tropical place this time.

Alright, so, something I've been talking about with my therapist a lot, but I thoughts folks out here could have interesting povs.

To sum it up, I'm constantly trying to act like a saint (figuratively, I'm an atheist). There's one exception to this, people holding power and making others miserable in any way.

But basically, you know, this whole mentality of banishing anger, jealousy, egoism, selfishness, greed, desire for power and authority and all that? That's me.

I don't mean I manage to do so constantly, but that's what I strive for.

One could think, and I did think, it was a desire for social praise. But really, when I get praised, which happen a lot, I don't care and that's more awkward that anything (like : woa dude, it's not the Oscars or something, chill out). And little by little, I started to think it didn't have much to do with being praised, that's just striving to live as I think it's better to live. To live a life I'll me content with when the grim reaper will come and all praises won't mean anything anymore.

My therapist thinks it's not really an issue as long as it doesn't cause myself pain (which it does because I'm deaf to my own needs 50% of the times).

But I don't see a satisfying way to live apart from that.

One potential misinterpretation I'd like to prevent. It's a very strong drive, but it doesn't make me blind. It really doesn't happen a lot but whenever I'm angry, I'm not feeling guilty. I know why I feel this, it's just that I didn't have any other way to manage a situation/feeling. I'll just strive to do better next time by trying to modify the situation so that anger will not be the most probable answer.

Do you find it weird? Anyone adopting this kind of behavior? Maybe everyone does. It may sound a bit megalomaniac, like hey I'm exceptional, but it really isn't what I mean. To my own eyes, I'm not a bad or a good person. I'm just trying to be what I want. If somebody tries to be someone different, it's all fine by me.

TL;DR : Is having high moral standards for one's self weird or toxic? Does my message actually sound megalomaniac?

I don't own decorations of any kind for any holiday. I live alone and I don't really celebrate much of anything. So my questions are:

  1. Do you decorate your home, office, automobile, etc. at all?
  2. If so which holidays?

I’ve always ment for it to be helpful, but I can see it being read rude or passive aggressive. Thank you in advance for your time and your thoughts!

Our university is hosting an AI summit with a student panel, a faculty panel, and attendee participation segments. It would be great to get panel questions, but we really need multiple choice, strongly agree/disagree, and yes/no style clicker questions for the attendees. Remembering they are primarily non-technical, with a wide range of exposure to the topic, what would you ask the crowd?

Lots of people are feeling hopeless and upset right now, and for good reason. It's normal to feel like no matter what you do, things are going to get much worse for a lot of people. Blame, despair and anger are natural reactions, but as the shock of the situation dulls, what's your plan going forward?

Call me naive, but seeing hate have a resurgence makes me want to do more to help the people that are going to suffer the most. I'm going to make a plan to volunteer more of my time and resources to help organizations that need it. I'm going to see if my friends can organize with me to sponsor a migrant family. I may not be able to do much, but my personal way of coping with shitty situations is to try to make the world a little less shitty.

I'm going to try to be kinder and more forgiving with people, and be a better role model for my kids. And I'm going to resist and fight back against hate when I see it.

Lastly, I'm going to be a more supportive friend to the people in my life. And to anyone reading this that feels like this world's gone insane, and you're all alone: you're not. We're still in this together, and I appreciate everything you're doing.

I'm working at this health company; it's my first IT job, and I've been here a little more than half a year so far. I do appreciate the opportunity I was given, but man, this place is kind of a wreck. The boss didn't want to upgrade the Windows 7 computer that's sitting on the network and utterly refused to do so. Even with everything that was shown that it could be upgraded, he was pissed, and it took six months to finally upgrade it to Windows 11 with the necessary software we have.

Another crucial issue is that literally the people who work on the floor have FULL ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS to install any programs they want. I brought this up to him, and he said, "We have bigger battles to fight." The computers are literally just "Password" or the start date of the employees. So literally all someone has to do is ask when they started working here, and boom—they have access to their account. We also had local accounts sitting on every computer. He does not want to change any of this.

I am capable of switching jobs. I have talked one-on-one with big figures in the field like Richard Stallman before. I do testing and help port hardware for coreboot/Libreboot. I am also looking into getting my Linux+ (currently only have my A+). What should I do?

(My boss and I are the only two IT people)

Hey Guys! Did anyone managed to save and has somewhere on their drive the old division by zero pirate artwork? The one with the pirate with glasses holding a guitar? I miss that one and want to show somebody. Thanks a lot in advance! Take care & God Bless!

One of my friends just attempted suicide like 30 minutes ago. Thankfully he's alive (I know bc he texted in the gc, and he didn't say it like a joke) but I'm not really sure what to do. I told him I'm free to talk if he needs to (I am not able to go see him in person) and another friend who lives near him said about the same. We also had another mutual friend commit suicide not that long ago. What do I do?

Recently started using mail merge.
Combined it with some vba scripting(didn't learn it well, just found some scripts on the net and modified them a bit) so that I could get pdf files for emailing by clicking a macro button from an excel sheet.

Also, go to use the info about the keyboard mouse right click button when someone's Right Mouse Button was not working. https://www.online-tech-tips.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Windows-Right-Click-Button.jpg

I mentioned only computer things because of recency, but please do share your experiences in other topics too.

I'm deeply concerned about the future, everyone I know is using non-free software and firmware, and relying on SaaS like ChatGPT. These companies are collecting and storing our thoughts and personal data, and I suspect they're sharing it with agencies like the NSA. Our cell phones track our every move, listen to our conversations, and record our activities. Google probably logs our search history forever, and Windows can access all of our files. Non-free firmware and the Intel Management Engine can even spy on us, capturing our screen activity and keystrokes. Cameras watch everywhere you move. It's a daunting battle to fight, and it's disheartening to see that even when we try to discuss these issues, many people are quick to dismiss our concerns. What are your thoughts on mass surviellence?
