A lot of hated vehicles are always a result of “good on paper, but poor on execution”.

Take the Pontiac Aztek for instance. It was an overall great vehicle in terms of practicality, and would’ve sold like hotcakes if it wasn’t for the poor execution, showcased by its rather hideous design.

What were vehicles which were “poor on paper, but great on execution”?

The first vehicle that comes to mind is the Porsche Cayenne

Now, SUVs and performance vehicles don’t go hand in hand, but somehow, the Cayenne IIRC was the first proper performance SUV (in GTS form), and it also managed to save Porsche from bankruptcy, which helped Porsche give rise to some amazing beasts (like the 918 Spyder)

It's honestly better than I was expecting, seems like Nissan really tried on this one. The BOF SUV market is super competitive, will be curious to see how this does.

Maybe some of us were driving beaters. Others had dream cars before having to sell for one reason or another. Go back as far as you are able and let's us know what your transportation situation looked like.

In the early 2000s, Nissans actually had character. The Maxima was the most fun mid-size car in its price range. Nowhere else could you have 260hp and available 6-speed for under $27,000. Even the Altima came available with this engine if you liked the Maxima but wanted something less "sporty".

The XTerra was the fun off-roader. Even the Sentra SE-R Spec V was fun and had great looks. Perfect for the younger folk who wanted something fun and practical but couldn't afford a Maxima. It was often called the "baby Skyline" especially if you got one in blue.

Then the 2004 model year comes and everything starts falling to shit. The maxima became bloated and hideous. The Altima became an afterthought. The horrible CVT transmissions arrived. Nissan began marketing their shitty crossover Murano hard.

By 2010, Nissan had become a meme, especially the Altima. The cars remained soulless, but they were selling like hot-cakes to people with poor credit scores. If you drove an Altima or a Murano, it was assumed you were either dirt poor or just gave 0 fucks about the car they drive.

Did the execs at Nissan just say "fuck trying to engineer cars that people actually seek out and compare against other cars, lets just make our cars easy to finance for anyone with a pulse who just "needs a car"?
