I just found that it sounds like from Google's video on developer verification that MDM's will be able to install unverified apps:

https://reddit.com/link/1ouxrzo/video/b057248rrr0g1/player

If that's true, we should be able to install unverified apps via Dhizuku.

Dhizuku is like Shizuku, but for MDM APIs. It exposes an API for apps to use device owner privileges without being set as device owner.

Dhizuku is a lot newer, and right now, there are a grand total of three apps that make use of Dhizuku, but it shouldn't be a big to make APK installers and app stores that utilize Dhizuku.

Fossify became the successor to Simple Mobile Tools, but I’d like to know if there are any other open source options for the dialer and contacts apps. Preferably something that’s still being updated and actively maintained.

Thanks!

I have been working on this update for the past 2 weeks and after a lot of struggle it's finally out and functioning, feel free to check it out! If you have any suggestions or issues with the extension you're welcome to create an issue on our GitHub page :)

The project is licensed under GNU GPL v3 or any later version

TL;DR: Pixel phones aren't sold in my country (details bellow) S25 is the only flagship I can actually buy. (Not a fan) I'm wondering, can it be meaningfully de-Googled, or turned into something less of a data vacuum? Is there a way to flash it to something like GrapheneOS (any open-source ROM)? Sorry for the essay. Thank you in advance! :)

I’ve been running the same phone for 6–7 years. It’s a miracle it still boots, but it's slowly reaching the point where apps are dropping support, and I’ve been putting off an upgrade for the better part of two years. Unfortunately for me, Pixel phones, which I've been desperately eyeing are not sold in my country. Not in stores, not through carriers, not even gray-market with sane pricing.

The only options I have here are iPhones, Samsung devices, or some low-spec Chinese brands like basic Redmi or Realme models (not talking about their flagships or middle range phones).

The only semi-reliable workaround is hopping on a plane, skipping two borders, and buying it in person (and praying the clerk doesn’t tack on hidden fees or quietly void the warranty once they realize I don’t speak their language and can’t understand a word in the contract). Then it’s just a matter of hoping the device survives the trip home. Pixel warranty support in the region is notoriously bad; even if you manage to ship a broken unit that far, you’ll bleed cash on shipping and almost certainly get a polite “warranty not valid here” email in return. That’s $800 for the phone and another $600-700 to learn it’s unfixable (more on that here).

That leaves the S25 series as the only high-end phone I can actually purchase. My real question: Can it actually be meaningfully de-Googled, or turned into something less of a data vacuum? And on a bigger note, is there any realistic way to flash it, can you install something like GrapheneOS on it, like you can on any Pixel?

Bit of a rant, I know. Thanks for reading and for any tips!

Hey everyone 👋

I’m looking for a free and open-source Android app that can automatically generate walking routes ideally one where I just set my starting point and preferred distance, and it creates a nice loop or out-and-back route for me.

Most apps I’ve found (like Komoot, Outdooractive, or Footpath) require manual planning or are closed-source with heavy tracking/subscriptions. I’d prefer something that:

works offline (bonus)

uses OpenStreetMap data

lets me pick distance or duration

and automatically picks a scenic or pedestrian-friendly route

Does anything like that exist in the FOSS ecosystem? Maybe something similar to Trail Router, but open source?

Thanks in advance! 🙏

A few weeks ago, I started a project that began as a small personal tool. Later, I shared it with my students to teach modern Android development : Compose, testing, CI/CD, dependency injection, and GitHub collaboration... I even created a few issues so they could practice contributing and reviewing pull requests.

To my surprise, I started receiving PRs from people I didn’t even know!

Watching something that began as a small classroom example grow into a collaborative project has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had as a developer.

Just wanted to say a genuine thank you to everyone who contributes, reports bugs, or simply shares feedback.

First of all i am strictly talking about certified Android devices and OEM's,

Let's use Sony as an example if sony wanted to go against Google's wishes and allow their users to install any APK they wanted verified developer or not on Sony phones do you think that would be possible?

With recent news of Android closing up the support for installing apps from third-party sources - I also dug up one interesting thing - ADB installations do NOT require identification, and essentially - work like installations usually do on Android without Dev verification, so, with Dev verification rolling out - are we entering a world where F-droid will exist as separate app on PC - which utilizes ADB to install, and update our apps? (BTW, it was Google who stated that ADB is not going to verify any installation, essentially - leaving a loop-hole for devices even if they are verified, at least, that is what they stated)

Hey, Hola, Hello

I don't know if this is allowed to post here but I got frustrated about the amount of Todo and Notes Apps which are coming from the US or China e.g. so I wanted to create my own one.

I live in Europe and it's fully european, private and secure. There are no ads or anything. If you think now "If the product is free, you are the product", i can say that I don't care about your data and so on.

The only thing I might gain from the App is that I have something to show in my own portfolio.

If you are interested to try my app out the link is this: Trudido which is also the name.

As is said the app is private and secure, fully offline, no account and so on. So maybe it fits in this sub, maybe not and then I'm sorry.

Thanks for reading :) Trudido

Hey everyone,

I recently came across the "Keep Android Open" website, and it really motivated me to try and get the word out and help more people see how Google's Developer Registration Decree is not just bad for developers but also bad for users, in the hope that more people would try to stop this.

I believe that there is a good chance that if enough people contact their respective national regulator, this mandate will get cancelled, as this policy is arguably illegal in more than one way: it potentially breaks antitrust and anti-competition laws. It also can be seen as a direct violation of a permanent injunction that was issued by a federal court against Google.

I made a video explaining why this mandate is bad news and in what ways it potentially breaks the law. I tried to make it simple to understand so anyone would be able to follow and understand the issue.

The video covers:

  • Why Google's mandate is a threat to both developers and consumers.
  • How it could destroy amazing projects like F-Droid.
  • A breakdown of the laws it potentially violates in the US and Europe.
  • How we can take action.

I hope you find it useful. Let me know your thoughts and if you have hope that we can actually stop this.

Made an Android firewall app that uses Shizuku to block internet access to any other app on your phone.

Most other firewall apps use a V.PN (had to write it this way, cause otherwise wouldn't let me post it) method as a firewall, but in this app, you can use the Shizuku method and block apps you want from accessing internet.

(some notes: the app doesn't need to be constantly running, and after one time setup, you can just even unistall it, but rebooting phone would just reverse the effects, so after rebooting run the app again, alongside Shizuku, also app is in early stages of development so there're bugs.)

Keep Android Open

In August 2025, Google announced that starting next year, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google.

This registration will involve:

  • Paying a fee to Google
  • Agreeing to Google’s Terms and Conditions
  • Providing government identification
  • Uploading evidence of an app’s private signing key
  • Listing all current and future application identifiers

Take action: https://keepandroidopen.org/
