Basically what happens is this:

• There's a significant fixed cost associated with maintaining gas infrastructure
• When there are fewer ratepayers, that cost is spread over fewer people
• So once more than a certain percentage of the population quits gas, it kicks off a spiral of increasing prices that push everybody who can afford to get off gas off it
• The few that are left are in real trouble financially.

This is why there has been a push in places like Ithaca to do it block-by-block, allowing for distribution shutdown in conjunction with individual building improvements.

NEW YORK (AP) — Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations.

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday said the state would launch a portal for residents to provide pictures and videos of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents operating in New York City and the rest of the state.

The wikipedia article has an “Israeli-Palestinian Conflict” section.

It basically goes a couple paragraphs about his pro-Palestine stance, then this paragraph:

Mamdani did not sponsor an annual Assembly resolution for Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2025, one of eleven Assembly members not to do so. He was last listed as a sponsor in 2021, his first year in office. [49] Mamdani voted in favor of the resolution each year.[50]

Which is misleading. Someone skimming this paragraph or reading the first sentence will get the false impression he is anti-semetic. It serves as a sort of dogwhistle.

When clearly the main relevant fact is he voted in favour of the holocaust remembrance day every year and sponsored it some years…

Ie. a neutral paragraph would be written like this:

Mamdani has voted in favour of the annual Assembly resolution for Holocaust Remembrance Day each year since entering office. In 2025, he was not listed among the resolution’s sponsors, though he continued to support the measure.
