A Watch-Only PeerTube instance would:

Allow users to create accounts, subscribe, like, comment, make playlists, and follow channels.

Not allow local video uploads or creators (no hosting load on the server).

Instead, it would simply fetch and display videos hosted across the wider PeerTube federation.

This would effectively create a "viewing portal" into PeerTube, without the cost and complexity of maintaining video storage.

Why this matters

Lower hosting barrier: An instance like this would cost far less to operate (no need to handle uploads and storage).

Accessibility for non-technical users: People who just want to watch and explore PeerTube without understanding federation or instance selection could have an easy entry point.

Appeal to older or casual users: A single, simple, “official-looking” watch-only portal would help people who might find the federated model confusing.

Good for outreach and discovery: Similar to how Mastodon has mastodon.social or Lemmy has lemmy.world, PeerTube could have a recognizable “main” watch-only instance—maybe something like peertube.video.

Potential benefits

Easier onboarding: people just sign up and start watching.

A familiar alternative for those coming from YouTube, where uploading isn’t the main goal.

Could help spread awareness of PeerTube by being a more “mainstream-ready” entry point

I can't seem to log in now find any information regarding this instance. It's also the same with lemmy.wtf. Is this happening for everyone else or just me?

!furbland_channel@cuddly.tube and !furblandalt@cuddly.tube are the two main channels I have. home to all the “content” I make. the main account is @groupnebula563@cuddly.tube though I don’t think you can follow accounts from Lemmy. just a warning: I know that older versions of Lemmy (aka not the absolute latest, basically) have trouble with PeerTube, though I’m not sure exactly what version the cutoff is. feel free to subscribe to the communities regardless in case it does work for you or your instance upgrades at some point. Mbin should work fine, as does PieFed and NodeBB. Not sure about Kbin, again worth a shot. enjoy!

Peertube is now popular than Lemmy according to Fedidb monthly user activity.

The peertube (463.8k) registered accounts is only 1893 users behind lemmy's (465.7k) Userbase.

I'm really glad more people are seeing the value of the video platform.

The recently released app on the playstore has 1k downloads.

The app store has 2 reviews while the play store has none. Thats funny as android users tend to review more often.

If I want to see more interesting videos on this great foss platform, I better learn more words and phrases to enjoy them more.

I’m also happy that there are Quebec instances.
