Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

I thought I could take this down after the election, apparently not.

Please review the sidebar.

  1. No self posts.
  2. No meme/image/shitposting.
  3. No video links.
  4. No social media. This includes Substack and Medium blogposts.
  5. Doxing people, even Nazis, gets you banned.

Those posts are better directed to Political Discussion or Political Memes.

Articles from trusted sources are absolutely welcome.

Items 1-4 can be used in comments, they just can't be submitted as posts.

The usual lemmy.world rules apply too:

No calls for violence. Full stop.

We're seeing an uptick in trolling already, trolls will be banhammered without warning.

He huffed about how the question wasn't "appropriate" even though his bill would result in kids being asked that same question.

A Republican state rep from Michigan testifying about his anti-trans sports bill on Monday was left speechless after an out Democratic colleague began his questioning by asking, “Representative, can you tell me: are you trans?”

A long beat staring down out gay Democratic state Rep. Mike McFall followed, before state Rep. Jason Woolford (R) managed to reply, “Are you?”

“I’m actually going somewhere with this,” he said to lawmakers in the small chamber.

“Because I want to know, how does a 14-year-old girl prove whether or not she’s trans to a 50-year-old coach?”

"Things he can't actually do for $800?"

OTOH, lets say he could.

Taking a bunch of money from one elite college and distributing it to dozens (hundreds?) of working class schools all over the country?

I thought he hated socialism...

I truly believe Fox News and the likes are one of the greatest evils in America. Think about how much hurt they've caused, how much they've torn families apart and how much they're destroyed our country.

The reason I feel this way has nothing to do with the fact they have a different opinion than I have. It's because they spread hate, division and lies.

We have the power to fight back against Fox News and other propaganda media with the following actions:

  1. Contact their advertisers and demand they stop advertising on Fox. Say you'll boycott them if they continue advertising on Fox.

  2. If you see Fox "News" on a TV in public take action! Depending on the situation you have the following options:

  • Contact the location and demand they change the channel.
  • Ask the receptionist to change the station.
  • Change the channel yourself with a device capable of acting as a universal remote such as your smartphone (use a USB-C or 3.5mm headphone jack IR blaster if your phone doesn't have a built in IR light), certain graphing calculators like the HP 48 series have IR, almost all old PDAs have IR, an actual universal remote if you have one of those (you can even buy some keychain sized ones), or a Flipper Zero. It might even be possible to remove Fox from the channel listing if you're comfortable doing that.
  1. If you have satellite or cable say you don't like the fact that your bill is subsidizing Fox News through carrier fees and that you'd like a way to not have Fox be part of your TV package. Or maybe it's time to cancel your TV subscription with prices being so high nowadays. If you cancel tell them that Fox News was part of the reason you canceled.

  2. Try educating current Fox Views. Consider using the method mentioned in the article or just convince them to stop watching political news all together until they heal from the fear cycle mentioned in the article (process can take a year or two but if can work).

The documents the New York Times acquired argue the US share of global power plant pollution has fallen, and that even if US power plants cut all of their emissions and pollution, it would not “meaningfully” improve public health in the US

Lawmakers can override the governor’s vetoes only during the session in which the bills are rejected, according to experts’ interpretation of the law. But typically, governors veto bills after sine die – the last day of session.

In 2023, Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed a nearly record-breaking 76 bills and one budget item— widely seen as his way to punish members for failing to pass his priority bills. Just two bills were vetoed during the session, in the window that lawmakers could have voted to override them.

Now, some lawmakers want to change that process. A proposal by Sen. Brian Birdwell would amend the Texas Constitution to allow legislators to briefly meet after the regular session ends to reconsider bills that passed by more than two-thirds of members.

“For years, we lived in a world where there was basically zero risk premium on U.S. debt,” Jared Bernstein, the former head of Joe Biden’s Council of Economic Advisers, told me.

“In four short months, Team Trump has squandered that advantage.”
