Many are turning to Lemmy as a viable Reddit alternative. Here is how to use your existing Mastodon account with Lemmy.

One thing that annoyed me about moving to Lemmy was that I'd lose my subreddits and that looking for and joining communities on Lemmy would be tedious. So (logically) I spent 2 days writing a script, that gets a list of your subreddits from your reddit account and looks for communities with the same name on Lemmy. It also joins those communites. So all you have to do is download, enter your credentials and you're done.

A few weeks ago I submitted a request to Reddit for a copy of my data. In the meantime I got bored of waiting and deleted my account. I thought I would not receive my data, but yesterday I woke up to an email with a link to a file with all my data in!

So to all those who are waiting to receive your data before deleting your account, as long as you have a verified email address associated with your account, you can go ahead and delete your account and you’ll still receive your data!

Just wanted to say that I love how people are using the upvote and downvote feature here as they don't seem to be used as agreement/disagreement but rather valuable or hindering to the conversation.

I really feel like I can express any opinion on here and start controversial discussions as long as I'm not malicious to anyone.
Disagreements are mostly stated in replies which promotes conversation and growth. There is currently no reason to be scared about being wrong.
I hope that this is not just a product of the smaller userbase compared to reddit but rather how upvotes/downvotes/boosts are laid out to the user.

So I got used to the new Reddit UI, but I want to move to Kbin because Reddit is slowly dying. But I have a hard time adapting to the Kbin UI. Is it a third-party Kbin UI that looks like the new Reddit UI?

When I first started the timeline thread for reddit GDPR/CCPA requests, https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/50981/Reddit-Data-Retrieval-Request-timeline-thread it seemed virtually no one got theirs.

Now, 11 out of 15 have received it. I even got mine via email, despite being permabanned and then deleting my account afterwards. Also, they are really pushing it, but so far no one seems to have gone over the deadline.

I do note that I seem to have gotten mine later than some others who put in requests later than I but got theirs earlier. In my case they were just one day shy of 30 days - but I did a request under 'Other' rather than GDPR or CCPA.

Hopefully this provides hope for others who want to grab their archive from reddit.

I ran into the profile limit so no more comments show up, but they are still on reddit with the csv file having links to the ones that haven't been deleted. There's too much for me to do it manually so would appreciate help if there's some tool to automate the process.

Reddit account.....deleted. Kbin seems to have a better "signal to noise" ratio IYKWIM

I don't know if Reddit is just trying to be a dick or what, but as I started to delete some comments, I'm not able to see any comments in my profile "hasn't commented on anything", but if I visit actual posts where I've commented, I can clearly see my comments there.

Does anyone know what's going on? Not even Redact or Power Delete Suite can see those comments, either :/

When the whole Reddit fiasco started happening, I saw a lot of people wiping and deleting their Reddit accounts and moving elsewhere, like here on Lemmy.

Now that it's starting to die down a little bit, does anyone regret doing that? Or are you glad that you took that step?

If I try to log into https://lemmy.ml/c/todayilearned with @ancientweasel@social.fossware.space it doesn't work.

If I search for !todayilearned@lemmy.ml from social.fossware.space it doesn't show up.

If I browse to lemmy.ml from federated instances on this lemmy there is no federated login that transits to a session on lemmy.ml .

What and I missing? What is a feasible way to have a useful user experience? It seams like this stuff is less than half baked. Please assist.

Is there some script, addon or something that will take data from GDPR request and delete content, especially comments, one by one? redact had this capability, but it's not working now

TL;DR: even if your delete script confirms a full wipe and your Reddit profile page shows zero comment, there may still be comments left over (that you can find through a search engine and delete manually on Reddit).

Weeks ago, I used redact.dev to delete all my Reddit comments (thousands of them over 10+ years). Redact.dev confirmed a full wipe, and my Profile > Comments page on Reddit confirmed I had no comment left.

Yet, as of today, Google still returns dozens of results for “$myredditusername site:reddit.com”. It’s not just Google’s crawler lagging; when I follow those links, those comments are still visible on the Reddit website, under my username, where I have the ability to manually delete them.

Thankfully, I hadn't yet nuked my account, because I knew of other users whose deleted comments got reinstated (although that was thought to be caused by the deletion script exceeding the API rate limit; supposedly a different case, as those missed comments would still show in the Profile page).

A problem many have realized is that there are many /tech, /gaming etc. communities in different instances/servers. There is already https://fediverse.observer/ , so I think it wouldn't be too hard to make a service that periodically roams the fediverse, checks for example the last 100,000 submissions of each (or top 100 active servers or something) server/instance, and gets info on all the communities/subs involved. Users could search communities, and if they write "gaming" they would get a list of all the active /gaming communities and info about them: subscriping users, total submissions, instance location (geographical) etc.

This could be used to find suitable /gaming communities for your needs.

A desireable future feature for both kbin and Lemmy would be to find and subscribe to multiple communities with the same name from the fediverse, and manage them to a single feed if the user so desires.

Ideas, thoughts?

I don't think many people understand that if they use Lemmy or kbin, they are posting to the fediverse. There are other platforms and will be more to come. Referring to a post on "Lemmy" or "kbin" is like saying you saw a post on your Windows or Mac computer.

We should be referring to it as...

• I saw it on the fediverse.
• Hey fediverse users ...
• A thread on the fediverse...

New terms may emerge but referring to the platform seems weird, almost ignorant.

edit: A better example is email. You wouldn't assume everyone is on Hotmail because that is the email provider you use. You say I'm sendingan eamail, not I'm sending a Hotmail.

It seems like it would help further prevent censorship, given how each instance of the Fediverse is run by people who can unilaterally decide what their users see. I'm beginning to feel like federation is but a half-step toward a solution.

Threads vs microblogs?

Does anyone have any advice on whether to use #threads or #microblogs when you're looking to say, start a discussion about a topic on #kbin? Is there an etiquette for what option is best? Or do people just pick depending on their mood (having a Twitter vs a Reddit sort of a day)?
