For those of you here who think the prime directive is flawed, or could be adjusted.

What do you agree with, how would you change what you disagree with, and why?

1702

What it says on the tin, really. I think this is going to be an issue when they get around to the smaller communities... It's going to suck majorly, as most people's default will remain with reddit for community discussion like this...

1703

Long story short: Collect/crosspost all episode discussions in /c/watchparty (or similar).

With a lot of shows I watch (not just Trek) I always found myself reading and sometimes engaging with the episode discussion, however, the meme and speculation and everything stream that came with the show-associated subreddit always was a bit much for me -- my interest waxes and wanes with things actually being on air, so I never subscribed.

A dedicated stream for that kind of stuff would be very much welcomed, also a low-churn news feed (such as "Show has been announced/renewed" etc).

So I CAN follow @startrek on my Mastodon feed but I am not sure how sustainable this will be in one feed when I really start finding interesting communities.

I've watched a lot of ST over my life and I swear this whole first contact but it's actually a warp bomb, DNA altering disguises.. Thing has been done in some previous ST series or movie but I have terrible memory? Or am I just crazy?

At the end of The Way of the Warrior, Bashir offers to make Odo’s face look like any species he wants. He defines. It seems like a wasted opportunity for Odo not to have explored his identity within the confines of being a solid. I would have loved for him to realize he could change his appearance and explore being different people without having to be a changing, instead of keeping the same face and uniform. Similarly, it would have been great for his experience of being a solid to have improved his ability to shape shift in some way. They always talk about how he has these glimmers of what it’s like to really be a rock or a hawk when he holds a shape for a long time. Was him being a solid for a long period ever addressed in that way?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this idea.

I, for one, am happy to be here.

While it was possibly just for the sake of naturalistic dialogue, the Una/Pike scene was definitely written in such a way that it hyped up their ideal lawyer - intentionally circling but not stating their identity - a she, who is avoiding their calls.

"Did you manage to contact her?" "She's avoiding my calls." "Mine too."

Is this going to be some kind of deep cut cameo? Can anyone recall a TOS era (or ENT depending on species) female character who was or could now logically be a lawyer?

This is a bit of an ad, but I swear I don't sponsor H&I. I just use them a lot. My wife and I bought "bunny ears"/an antenna for our TV when we lived in the Midwest. We also watch H&I on the west coast. Almost every night they play one episode from each popular, live-action, series in order of production: TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise. The start time depends on your location, but I believe it starts around 7pm Central Time.

It has commercials, but I don't mind since the shows are "free" over the airwaves. I haven't tested in the east coast but I bet a lot of the country has some coverage.

Our antenna also has some MacGuyver, Stargate, Baywatch, and some other popular old shows. I just think it's cool that we can have access to such great shows with a one-time cost (and commercials). It's also great because it works during internet issues (as a backup if streaming is failing). My wife and I often just left it on in the background while we worked or made dinner!

What are your favorite time travel episodes? Also what are your least favorite?

In April, the Roddenberry Archives and OTOY published virtual bridges you could walk around for most main ships we see on screen. But now, when I follow old links to the site, I get redirected to the Roddenberry Archives new frontpage, and I can't find the virtual bridges anywhere. Google finds several news articles of the publication, but nothing on them being taken down (except a link to r/StarTrek, but I can't read that because the sub is private).

So, why were the virtual bridges taken down, or are they just hosted elsewhere?

LoglineA distress call from Lt. Noonien-Singh compels Spock to disobey orders and take the USS Enterprise and its crew into disputed space, risking renewed hostilities with the Klingons in a bid to aid their shipmate.

A note about episode discussions on startrek.website

Right now, the plan is to post the /c/startrek discussion when the episode drops on Thursdays. Once the global community has had some time to watch and digest what they've seen, the /c/daystrominstitute discussion will go live on Sundays for a more in-depth analysis. This is subject to change as we evaluate what works best for the community as a whole.

Editor's Note: Apologies if this has been discussed to death, but I figured covering old territory may be necessary as we regenerate.

I was too cool in middle school for Magic the Gathering (or maybe my Mom wouldn't let me player because of demons or something) so my trading card experience was fixated on Star Trek: The Next Generation Customizable Card Game, released originally by Decipher in 1994. At the time, I had no job and no allowance so I only had a few starter decks I got for birthdays or saving up whatever I made from mowing my neighbor's yard. I remember making a very of-the-times custom box from a shoebox covered in duct tape to hold my precious collection--I still have that if anyone wants a photo, haha.

Fast forward to a few years ago when I discovered a new coworker was also a big Trek fan! He also played the game, and he was actually good enough to win some tournaments! That is when I discovered the resell market and websites like The Continuing Committee and the wonderful people that have kept the game alive all these years. I spent more money on eBay (and a few semi-sketchy websites I had never heard of before) than I am prepared to admit, but it was all worth it to fulfill a childhood dream: I now own the entire TNG bridge crew and Enterprise D cards, something I could only salivate over as a kid.

We played a ton of great games over lunch breaks and I learned that all of my favorite cards are weaklings compared to the later expansions, as appears to be true of all long running card games. Eventually he moved on and I had nobody left to play with, but I still occasionally pull out the collection and go through it to relive the nostalgia.

The only major downside is that the popularity had dropped off pretty hard by the time DS9 and Voyager expansions came out, so while the market is flooded with affordable copies of the original run and the few early expansions I remembered, trying to collect the equivalent primary-ship-and-main-crew cards from my other favorite franchises appears to be completely beyond my financial range.

So, that's my story. Did anyone else play and/or collect? Anyone still involved in the modern incarnation?

nuqneH!

Welcome to our new home in the Fed~~eration~~iverse. First of all- WOW we did not expect to surpass 300 users on this instance (and over 1K fediverse subscribers) within our first 48 hours and with little promotional effort. We are all excited to see where this long road goes.

Coming from Reddit and confused about Lemmy?

I had some stuff typed out, but honestly, this thread sums it up better. Check it out! It has infographics.

If you're still stressed out, remember that Lemmy is still new. Yes, it's ugly, but people said Reddit was ugly too (both are correct). As Lemmy grows, and #Rexxit continues, more tools will get made. Decentralization opens up a lot of possibilities we didn't have before. The future is bright.

Will other communities be setting up shop besides StarTrek, DaystromInstitute and Risa?

Yes! Eventually. Right now our focus is staying online, fast, and reliable which means keeping things focused while we find our footing. Daystrom, StarTrek and Risa were chosen to start off with because the three of them cover the "srs bsns ↔ shitposting" spread quite well.

If you are part of a community interested in being hosted on startrek.website, send me a DM and we can try to work something out.

Qapla'! How can I support?

We've started a Patreon here: Patreon.com/treksite. There's only one plan and it's just $4. If our growth continues like it has, we're going to need to upgrade our hosting very soon.

What's up with the "unencrypted DMs" warning?

I feel like I'm not seeing everything. What gives?

Lemmy is weird with languages. In your user settings, make sure “Language” is set to both “English” and “Undetermined”. You can select additional languages as well, but they aren’t currently allowed on this server. On desktop, you can use CTRL+click to select both options. This will allow you to see content for which the author has not set a language, and content which has been set to “English”.

This will hopefully be made more clear with future updates.

Thumbnails acting weird/not showing up (for users on another instance)?

Add this exception to your adblocker (replace "lemmy.world" with your instance):

Where can I find official server updates?

Follow us on Mastodon for updates, scheduled maintenance, etc.

Where can I talk with Trekkies about non-Trek stuff?

We've just opened a new "offtopic" community, welcome to !quarks@startrek.website, Quarks is fun!

Ok, so I'm trial following @startrek and I'm getting a torrent(<a bit of hyperbole) posts in my home page. How do you people that follow hundreds/thousands handle this? Just ignore most of what flows down the page?

I've tried to be careful curating the people I follow, and it was fairly manageable til today. Trying to avoid setting up a lemmy acct, but StarTrek is only gonna get more active, and there's more to life than StarTrek :^O How to manage?

Hello friends! Friendly neighbor over at sh.itjust.works popping in to lend a hand. Here's a very useful set of instructions and tips that have been floating about, I hope you find it useful too.

You can ignore the "How to Join Lemmy" part if you're already happily set up on startrek.website, but the rest'll still be useful.

I'm happy to answer any questions people may have!

(These instructions are for using Lemmy in a browser. If you are using an app, some steps may differ.)

How to Join Lemmy

To use Lemmy, you need to be a member of one instance from the list at https://join-lemmy.org/instances. You will still be able to see content from anywhere, but the instance you choose will determine:

  • What URL you use to log in to Lemmy,
  • What content shows on the homepage when you select "Local" or "All",
  • Who moderates your instance, and
  • What rules you agree to when you sign up.

Choose an instance that matches your interests, language, and region. (If you want more information about an instance, you can tap its "Join" button, which will show you its current homepage in the main view and its description in the sidebar. You can also check the tables here and here.) Please avoid joining instances that are already crowded (1K+ users/month). If an instance gets overcrowded, it can start running slowly or experiencing downtime, so choosing an uncrowded instance will give both you and others a better Lemmy experience.

Once you have decided on an instance, tap its "Join" button to open it and then tap "Sign Up" in the upper-right corner. Fill out the form and wait for your account to be approved.

When your account is approved, log in and customize your profile and settings. If you change your language settings, select "Undetermined" in addition to any languages you speak so that you can still see posts and comments that are not tagged as being in any particular language.

How to Find and Subscribe to Communities

There are four ways to find communities through Lemmy:

  1. To browse communities that others in your instance are already subscribed to, tap the "Communities" tab at the top of the page and choose the "All" scope. Tapping on a community name will open it through your instance.

  2. To browse communities across all instances, visit https://browse.feddit.de/. Tapping on the community's name will open it, but probably not through your instance (in which case the page will say that you are not logged in). Instead, follow these steps:

    a. Copy the community's URL or remote name. You can use the copy button next to the community name, you can open the community outside your instance and copy the URL from your address bar, or you can open the community outside your instance and copy the remote name (which will look like [!community@instance.tld](/c/community@instance.tld)) from the sidebar.

    b. In your instance, tap on the "🔍 Search" button in the upper toolbar.

    c. Make sure that you have chosen "All" for each of the four filters: "Type", "Scope", "Community", and "Creator".

    d. Paste the community's URL or remote name into the search field and tap "Search".

    e. One of the results should be the community shown as an icon, a name, and a subscriber count. If you do not see it, or it is buried too deep in the search results, try changing "Scope" to "Local". If that does not work, you may need to wait a bit and try again.

    f. Tap on the community in the search results to open it in your instance.

  3. If you want an experience similar to Reddit's r/all, visit https://lemmy.directory/home/data_type/Post/listing_type/All/sort/Hot/page/1, which aggregates from these communities as described here. As in Option 2, you can copy and search for a community's URL to open it in your instance and subscribe to it.

  4. If you don't see a community by browsing, subscribe to https://lemmy.ml/c/findacommunity and make a post about what you're looking for.

Once a community is open in your instance, subscribe to it by tapping on the "Subscribe" button at the top of the sidebar. It will then appear in the "Subscribed" section of your "Communities" tab, and its posts will show on your home feeds.

Can't find a community you're looking for? If your instance allows it, you can create the community yourself by tapping "Create Community" in the upper toolbar.

The simple version of that wall of text is if you're the first person on your instance to subscribe to a community:

  1. Get the URL (for example, https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy)

  2. Go to the Communities page

  3. Search for that URL

  4. Change all search options to "All" (even "Communities")

  5. Click the federated link it gives you (for example, https://startrek.website/c/lemmy@lemmy.ml)

  6. Click subscribe

EDIT: Also, there's a new project for finding communities across instances! lemmyverse.net is a REALLY cool and easy way to find communities that you might want to subscribe to!
