Each group's approach

Progressive

If we get enough power, we will stop using your tax money to bomb brown kids / march towards extinction.

That will mean you're free to work for your own survival. The savings will also let us cut taxes overall.

You might not hear these basic, obvious ideas every day. We're so outnumbered by extinction cultists, it's probably harder to encounter us than to encounter liars who say "banning guns is progress" or "leftists support starvation" or something. Lately, we're basically not allowed to be famous in real life, so I'm just a picture of Captain Kirk from Star Trek.

"Socialist"

If we get enough power, we will become "social workers" who give you basic needs like food and water in exchange for the time you spend explaining basic shit to us. However, we will constantly bitch at you about how hard it is to understand what you're saying, and how we wish you would just join our extinction cult instead.

When we get tired of paying for your food and stuff, we aren't really sure if we'll kill you, or enslave you, or finally listen to what you're saying / let you work for your own survival.

You've probably heard all these ideas before. Don't worry. You'll hear our ideas again, and again, and again. We're one of the groups backed by the FCC.

"Moderate right"

If we get enough power, we will enslave you for not willingly joining our extinction cult.

Social programs will be put in place to make sure you can't be homeless, because you can't be jobless.

We'll keep your living/working conditions just tolerable enough to make you comply without killing you too fast.

You've probably heard all these ideas before. Don't worry. You'll hear our ideas again, and again, and again. We're one of the groups backed by the FCC.

"Far right"

If we get enough power, we will kill you ASAP for not joining our extinction cult.

We'll call that "freedom" because we'll be "free" to do whatever we want to outsiders: people who don't follow the rules to be part of our in-group.

Since you're dead, you won't be able to argue "freedom" means "not having a bunch of dumb rules people can be killed for not following."

You've probably heard all these ideas before. Don't worry. You'll hear our ideas again, and again, and again. We're one of the groups backed by the FCC.

I down voted because I disagree with your portrayal of progressive, socialist. Socialism is a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. Socialism aims to achieve greater social equality In practice, this can range from democratic systems that use government intervention to regulate capitalism, to more authoritarian models where the state has dominant control over the economy.

The Bernie Sanders model aims for the government to pass laws regulating capitalism to ensure workers have their basic needs for food, water, housing, and healthcare met. This could mean laws that regulate corporate pollution so your private well doesn't become tainted making your water undrinkable. This could mean, minimum wage laws to ensure works are making enough to survive. This could mean tax laws written in a way that are progressive, so that the people that are the most well off have the highest burden, and that money is redistributed by the government in the way of well paved and safe roads, emergency services (EMT, fire, police,) free public education/universities, and universal healthcare.

In the star trek universe working for currency is no longer a thing. Everyone in the ST universe has their needs met automatically, (some unlimited energy source converts energy to food via replicators, everyone has access to the healthcare they need, people work in fields that they enjoy AND contribute to the betterment of society without needing money.) Fulfillment comes from earned prestige, rather than earned wages. In the ST universe ALL life is deserving of reverence. The presence of microbial life on an alien planet would shut down a terraforming operation in the ST universe, because that microbial life deserves to live in its native environment to evolve as conditions allow. I also would argue that Captain Picard is a better embodiment of a true progressive.

I don't really agree about the cult stuff, except for the far right. That's why I downvoted your post.

@ your paragraph on the Bernie Sanders model: good ideas, but maybe not helpful for me when I don't know if I'm going to be enslaved or killed for not wanting to go extinct or bomb brown kids

@ your paragraph on Star Trek: all of that would have to start somewhere. My personal view of Kirk and Picard's characters is they would both support the Sumud flotilla and support gun rights, and overall respect everyone's right to defend themselves and others. Those are criteria I couldn't find a real life celebrity to use a picture of

I don't think any of that contradicts my portrayal of progressive and socialist positions

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Why don't you think what I said contradicts your portrayal of being a progressive or socialist? What is your line of reasoning? Are you a bot or a troll? Can you even define terms like socialism or progressivism? Do you understand the nuance between pure socialism and democratic socialism?

Being free to work for survival is not what happens in the ST universe. People get what they need to survive, working is optional.

Socialists aren't interested in being social workers. They are interested is making sure people have their needs met through legislation. People still work jobs and earn income under socialism, but that income is legislated to ensure the worker doesn't starve to death. The shit about forcing people to joint a cult, or socialists at some point deciding that they will maybe kill you if they don't feel like paying for food an stuff at a later date is one of the most uneducated sentences I have ever read.

I replied twice because I realized my first one didn't explain enough. Not sure if the other reply will help.

I'm not a bot or a troll. I don't understand the nuance between pure socialism and democratic socialism. I also put "socialist" in quote marks and not progressive, because it's a group of people everyone seems to call "the socialists" even though every group kinda has socialism mixed into their ideas, by my understanding.

People get what they need to survive because the Star Trek universe takes place after past generations worked for survival. They didn't end the planet with nuclear war and climate change, they let smart people reverse climate change and stabilize geopolitics with modern technology. They developed a post-scarcity economy, instead of just wasting all their crude oil and then dying.

I'm definitely concerned I will be behind bars or underground after socialists take over and get tired of paying for my food. I'm not gonna work for income if they keep trying to make me file taxes to bomb brown kids. I might not even make it far enough to see their takeover, or I might last longer than that if people turn more reasonable. But it seems inevitable that the group people call "the socialists" will run the country soon, and I don't see much evidence they will actually protect me instead of just turning into / letting themselves be replaced again by the groups to the right.

But it seems inevitable that the group people call “the socialists” will run the country soon

Do you know who the president of the united states is and what the president's party affiliation is? Do you know which party holds the majority in the house and senate? Because they sure as hell aren't socialists.

Don't bother responding; I won't reply because the current dialog tells me you're incapable of looking basic things up to attempt self education, or you're making bad faith arguments to troll.

You're making no sense. If you don't reply again, so be it

[–] finitebanjo@piefed.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This bro thinks the absolute only progress is if government magically stops existing and anything else is a doomsday cult.

Your reply might have been meant as an insult, but you're the only critic that actually replied instead of just silently downvoting. I appreciate that, so you're the first person I'll ask for feedback on this revised version. Does this get across better?
