My main concern is replacing the remote, because bluetooth on linux is quite awful.

Im guessing run kodi is the other solution? I want the SO to be able to use it as easily as the smart tv, which is of course riddled with ads and downloading random shit on my network that I hate (20 gigs to Disney + in a month. I dont have any subs. Wtf is it downloading? I blocked it now ofc)

For reference, trying to axe the smart tv and use my atari vcs with mint on it to fulfill those needs. It should have the power and I want to keep the sleek look and not have an actual pc in the room.

Originally, XFE rollout on devices other than ROG Xbox Ally was planned for 2026 but MS decided to release it a few months earlier. Probably as a response to the reveal of Steam Machine.

Tomorrow, the update will be available to all existing PC handhelds with Windows. Additionally the XFE will also be available to desktop PC for users who sign up to the programs: Windows Insider and Xbox Insider (source: TheVerge).

XFE is a lightweight shell that replaces the standard desktop (Explorer) to limit memory usage and reduce number of background processes. It also support gamepad and show games installed from all stores. When the system is booted into this shell you will have additional 2 GB memory and 30% fewer background processes. That additional memory is available because the system doesn’t start the desktop as some other default apps and services. Those features still exist in the system but new Xbox shell don't load them

You need to remember that when you start some apps in background those apps will use memory. They can also trigger system to load some additional features that was skipped by XFE. So by default all games launchers will be disabled in auto-start and XFE will start them only when you click a game installed from such service.

  • games from GOG will start without any launcher at all.
  • games from MS Store (Game Pass) have launcher already loaded into memory (XFE)
  • games from Steam, Epic, Ubisoft etc. will start additional launcher when you click a link to a game. Some launchers can waste up to 1 GB

How to optimize handheld for max performance?

  • Always think about available memory. Your handheld have only 16 GB divided between system memory and video memory. Any app launched in background will waste resources
  • Disable all game launchers in auto-start
  • Don't launch overlays
  • Disable Steam Big Picture and use classic Steam interface which use less memory. Classic interface don't support gamepad but you will never click anything in Steam app because you will launch games from XFE
  • Disable Xbox button app in Steam to make sure that Steam will never launch Steam Big Picture by accident.
  • Disable ads in Steam. By default, Steam launches a small window showing ads every time you start the launcher. This window not only wastes memory but also will “intercept focus” when you close a game. So instead of returning to XFE, you will return to a window with ads that can’t be closed using a gamepad. You don't want that. Find option "Special Offers" in Steam settings and turn it off
  • When you close game remember to also close game launcher. That launcher will stay hidden minimized to system tray and will waste resources

I will test it tomorrow on my ROG Ally Z1E (2023) to check how much memory is available in XFE and update this post with some data: memory used, number of background processes, impact of each launcher etc.

I'm looking to finally ditch Onedrive with a self hosted alternative, but I'm not sure what to go with. I want something with all of the files on a central server, with an Android client with the option to sync individual files for offline access as needed. Preferably the files should also be stored in plain format on the server to make backups easier and as a fallback if the service completely fails and I don't have time to fix it. Linux and Windows clients are a bonus but I'm happy just using a web gui if that's all that's available. These are the options I've considered so far:

Seafile - This was the one that I thought fit my needs the best until earlier but apparently it has a weird disk layout which means the files are basically inaccessible by anything else?

Nextcloud - I had originally ruled this out because I don't care about any of the additional features which people claim also slow it down and make it a bit of a resource hog, and I also don't want to deal with forced https. However I think the community image may actually be what I want as it seems to be just the file server and works with just http? I am a bit confused about the different options for the database though. https://hub.docker.com/_/nextcloud/

Syncthing - Not quite what I'm looking for as you need to sync the entire thing, and I don't like whatever weirdness is going on with the Android app at the moment

SAMBA share - Also not really what I'm looking for as there's no offline syncing, but very easy to set up and basically nothing to go wrong

Are there any other options I should be looking into?

A court in Tokyo has ordered a US internet infrastructure firm to pay over 3.2 million dollars in damages to major Japanese publishers over manga piracy websites.

The company, Cloudflare, was found to have aided publishing-rights infringement by providing content delivery network, or CDN, services to piracy site operators.

The lawsuit was filed by the four Japanese firms, Kodansha, Shueisha, Shogakukan and Kadokawa in response to piracy sites that post popular manga works, such as "One Piece" and "Attack on Titan," without authorization.

The Tokyo District Court handed down its ruling on Wednesday.

It noted that CDN services allowed the piracy sites to efficiently distribute large amounts of data.

It also said Cloudflare is presumed to have failed to verify the identities of the operators of these sites when entering into service contracts with them.

The court ruled that the company neglected its obligation to stop providing its services despite being made aware of the rights infringements through notices from the publishers.

The court ordered Cloudflare to pay a total of over 500 million yen, or over 3.2 million dollars, in damages, fully granting the claims of three of the publishers.

Lawyers for the publishers say this is the first court ruling to order a company to pay damages for providing CDN services to piracy sites.

Cloudflare released a statement to the media following Wednesday's ruling.

The statement, released the same day, maintains that companies such as Cloudflare that provide CDN cannot control or delete content that they do not host that is uploaded on their services.

It says the latest ruling handed down to a technical go-between serves as a problematic precedent on a global scale and may have a serious effect on the efficiency, security and credibility of the internet -- not only in Japan, but the rest of the world.

It says it plans to appeal the ruling to ensure that limitations on liability, which are essential for an open and secure internet, remain in place.

Zorin OS 18 was released on October 14. Just 48 hours later, the team announced it had already been downloaded 100K times. Now, a month later, they’re reporting an even bigger milestone: Zorin OS 18 has surpassed 1M downloads in its first month.

“We’re thrilled to announce that Zorin OS 18 has amassed 1 million downloads in just over a month since its release, breaking all previous records.”

In fact, it would be great to see more Linux distributions adopt this practice and share their download numbers. That alone would give us a much clearer sense of how widely each one is used, since the Linux community still doesn’t have a reliable way to measure the popularity of individual distros.
