OTTAWA — Prospective federal NDP leadership candidates will have to raise $100,000 and amass 500 signatures from members — most of which cannot come from cisgender men — to be officially in the running, according to rules that were released on Tuesday. Article content

With the NDP leadership race now underway, candidates who are hoping to succeed Jagmeet Singh should be making themselves known in short order. The winner will be announced in Winnipeg as part of the party’s national convention on March 29, 2026.

For the moment, Edmonton MP Heather McPherson as well as left-wing activists Avi Lewis and Yves Engler are expected to throw their hats in the ring, but others could follow.

In a press release, the NDP said there was “strong interest” in the contest after application packages for prospective candidates were released on August 20, reflecting “members’ enthusiasm for a dynamic and engaging race that will shape the future of the NDP.” Article content

“This leadership race is an exciting opportunity for our members and for people across the country who share progressive values,” said party president Mary Shortall.

“It will spark important conversations about the kind of future we want to build together, rooted in fairness, justice, and hope. I know our members are eager to take part in a contest that is democratic, inclusive, and inspiring for the entire movement,” she added.

Prospective candidates will need to collect at least 500 signatures from party members, including a minimum of 50 from each of five regions — the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, the Prairies as well as British Columbia and the territories.

Rules indicate that at least 50 per cent of the total required signatures must be from NDP members who do not identify as a cisgender man — meaning a male whose reported gender corresponds to their reported sex at birth.

The American tourist who was stabbed in the face while protecting two women on a tram in Germany is speaking out about what he calls Europe’s "immigration problem."

In an interview after his release from the hospital, 21-year-old John Rudat told "Fox & Friends First" Wednesday he believes the attack highlights Germany’s failure to address immigration. He said he later learned one of the suspects — a Syrian asylum seeker already known to police — was arrested, released by prosecutors and then re-arrested. Another suspect remains at large.

"People have been telling me over the past 10 years [that] it has been getting worse and worse and worse. And, since this incident, thousands of people, especially women, have reached out to me claiming that they haven’t been feeling safe on the trams. They haven’t been feeling safe in their own home city, their own country," he said.

During a press conference announcing the program on Monday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier referenced a recent fatal accident in which three people were killed after Harjinder Singh, 28, a semi-truck driver, allegedly made an illegal U-turn in Florida.

“Most people in Florida are now aware of the serious tragedy that happened down in southeast Florida,” Uthmeier said. “Someone that never should have been given a driver’s license, much less a CDL license to drive larger commercial vehicles, engaged in reckless behavior that took three lives.”

Uthmeier continued to admit that there is “no telling how many illegal aliens are” in the United States “driving large commercial vehicles and putting American families in a safety risk every single day.”

India’s government should oppose a U.S. government crackdown on the 150,000 Indian drivers in the U.S. trucking industry, said an Indian politician whose district includes many of the drivers’ families.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal represents a district in the Punjab region, which is home to many members of the Sikh ethnic group who work illegally or legally in the U.S. trucking industry. They include the Indian truck driver, Harjinder Singh, who is facing homicide charges after killing three Americans in a turnpike U-turn.

Badal was formerly a cabinet minister in India’s federal government, and used Twitter to ask India’s foreign minister to intervene in U.S. politics to protect the Sikh truck drivers:

More than [150,000] Punjabi truck drivers in the US shud not be discriminated against due to Harjinder [Singh]’s mistake & their livelihood shud not be snatched from them by denying them work visas & making it more difficult for them to drive [U.S.] trucks by bringing in new language proficiency rules.

A crackdown would “have a detrimental effect on [the left-behind] families” in India that depend on the wage remittances sent home by Indian migrants, said Badal, who is a Sikh.

The crackdown is being prompted by public protests about highway deaths and economic damage caused by the growing use of overworked, underpaid, unsupervised, dangerous, and unprofessional foreign truckers on U.S. roads.

Sikhs are a distinct religious and ethnic group in northeastern India that emerged in the 1700s. Sikh men can be recognized by their distinctive turbans that cover their uncut hair. Some Sikhs are pushing for an independent nation-state in the Punjab region, to be called Khalistan.
