Plasma 6 Bugs

If you encounter a bug, proceed to https://bugs.kde.org/, check whether it has been reported.

If it hasn't, report it yourself.

PLEASE THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE POSTING HERE.

Developers do not look for reports on social media, so they will not see it and all it does is clutter up the feed.

I have been curious for some time now if there is any difference between them besides one being located in "Display Configuration" and the other in "Power Management". They seem a bit redundant to me so as if the folks from the Plasma team weren't sure where to put and how to name it, lol. >.<

Hello folks! I’ve been having this issue seen in the screenshot. I get this Wayland window and krunner and other things run in there. After a time I even get the login screen inside the wayland window. If I close it I lose krunner, alt-tab, and other keyboard shortcuts.

Not sure how this is happening or how to make it go away. I did try Wayland at one point but it wasn’t quite working out for me and since I reverted back to X11 I get this issue.

If anyone’s wondering, my main issue with Wayland was that it wasn’t setting the DISPLAY and WAYLAND_DISPLAY environment variables for some reason, and this would cause all kinds of software like Steam and Firefox to not even launch. I tried setting them manually but that didn’t go do well either.

Edit: Thank you all! With your help I managed to find and fix it - it was my fault due to a systemd override launching a service after kwin_wayland.

[Unit]
Requires=plasma-kwin_wayland.service
After=plasma-kwin_wayland.service
[Install]
WantedBy=graphical-session.target

That was the issue. Remved the override and everything works!
I even tried Wayland again and now the display variables are defined correctly from the get go and everything works - although this has been on again off again so it might stop working at one point.

tried plasma a year back and gave up because I couldn't get the above setup to work (annoying lines appearing while typing) on three different laptops (125, 133, 150%). there was supposedly a fix (increasing line spacing) but that didn't work for me. just checking in to see if some workaround came to light? thanks.

Hello fellow KDE users! I use KDE Plasma on my tablet, but found windows managements a bit painful when using only the touchscreen, so I wrote this KWin script: it just organize automatically each window in a separate virtual desktop, maximized and borderless, allowing you to use the built in touchscreen gestures (3 fingers slide) to switch between them (animations are real smooth!)
I also released it on pling/kde store

Hope you'll find it useful! Let me know your thoughts about this!

I have an issue with NVIDIA and wayland which persists since Kubuntu 22.10. It still happens in 23.10.

Normally I run Wayland with the integrated Intel GPU and everything is fine.

If I want to play a game then I run "prime-select nvidia" and reboot. However if I run "glxinfo | grep renderer" after that, the output is the Intel GPU. ("prime-select query" outputs nvidia).

If I switch to X11 then everything runs on the NVIDIA GPU which is fine. But I wanted to use Wayland with NVIDIA and thought it should work by now.

Any ideas what is going on?

I am running Kubuntu 23.10 on Wayland and Firefox (snap version) does not show a Minimize or Maximize Button anymore in the top right corner (see attached screenshot).

How can I bring these buttons back?

Krita 🖌️ is now available on the macOS store.

If you are an #Apple #Mac user, you can now install KDE's powerful #painting program @Krita directly to your #macOS-powered machine.

Read why it took so long and how to avoid scammy knock-offs (of which there are quite few) here:

So I jumped ship from Windows to Kubuntu last night, and It's mostly been pretty good. However my general performance of the computer has been abysmal. Like it takes upwards of 5 seconds to open anything. All of my hardware seems to be running at max speeds, so I have no idea why it would be so sluggish? It's as if I'm running on 2gb of ram and a cpu at like 1.5ghz. My specs are:

i7-8700k at 4.7mhz max Amd Rx 6750xt 16gb ram at 3200mhz Linux is on an m.2

Any ideas? This is practically unusable for any normal operations, let alone any gaming.

I hope this doesn't violate the low-quality rule. For those who don't know, when you right click an archive in Dolphin, the extract menu has a "Extract archive here, autodetect subfolder" option and its absolutely brilliant! If you've ever extracted a zip, tar, etc and ended up with files splattered everywhere this feature will prevent that. Basically when you choose this option it will:

  • Look to see if the archive has a top level folder, if it does, it will extract it normally
  • If it does not (so all of the files are at the top level), it will automatically create a folder for the archive and extract those top level files into it

It's something I really wish other file managers had, and is just another one of those features from the KDE team that gives me the "The developer(s) who created this also use this in their daily lives" impression (which is not to say that others don't). You can of course just open your favorite archive utility and manually check, then manually make the folder yourself and extract the files into there, but this lets me skip those couple of steps and I appreciate that so much.

Not sure if it's okay to ask for support in here, I'm just giving it a try. 🙂

I'm using Manjaro Linux with KDE 5.26, and I thought in this release touchpad gestures should be working out of the box, but I was wrong. In an X11 session, I got three-finger swipe up/down to switch virtual desktops, and in Wayland I just get two fingers for scrolling, everything else doesn't seem to work.

How can I enable all the touchpad gestures?

I began distro hopping in 2021, with a slight break in 2022, before coming back full swing this year. After a while of trying almost anything that seemed interesting to me, tinkering, and learning about Linux as a whole, I've absolutely fallen in LOVE with KDE as a whole. I'll mainly be talking about the desktop, here.

I've a hard time using other stuff now, with how well Plasma fits my use-case as well as just how customizable it is. I even made my desktop sorta like GNOME, in a setup I jokingly call 'KNOME'. Yes, name 100% stolen. Works just like Plasma with some of the looks that I like from GNOME.

Beyond that, I do need to mention I run Arch [btw] for this, but I absolutely love how quick and efficiently updates are delivered as well as how the community is kept-up with. I know there are distro differences, but from my experience on Arch, KDE updates typically go great and SUPER quick / painless.

The community being kept-up with the development process also really helps everything feel more engaging and, therefor, easy to engage with. I was VERY scared about posting on Linux forums, boards and threads, but the KDE community was honestly a large part of the reason I opened up at all, and I've made some great friends along the way!

I look heavily forward to using a KDE phone as soon as possible, as well as Big Screen. I'm fully invested in KDE from here on out. Thank you to everyone for working so hard to make KDE what it is!

For the last bit of this, I'd like to give special thanks to Nicco Loves Linux on YouTube, for making such great KDE and Linux content in general. Their videos are a big reason I'm so comfortable with KDE today! If they happen to be here, thank you so much! Love your videos!

Picture of desktop for those wondering what KNOME is. As for the point of this post? Just wanted to show some love to the devs, kontributors, and the kommunity. Hope that's okay!

I use my own custom keyboard layout based on the US International layout that adds in all the symbols needed to write in all Latin script European languages, such as č, ħ, ð, ş, ł, l·l, ő, ů... Most are created via dead keys, others such as ø, æ, ə are added into the third and fourth levels (AltGr and Shift). I find it very useful as I write in different language and have to input a lot of names from all over the world for work. It's not optimized for any language, but is reasonably easy to use for all of them.

Originally I had used a keyboard layout creator on Windows, but when it came to recreate it on Linux I had to resort to editing system files: I mapped every key by duplicating and editing one of the layouts found in the /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us file, gave it a new name and then edited /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base to add the name of the new layout. Logout, login again and there the new layout was, perfectly functional.

This system is not practical at all though, especially because some updates (not all) rewrite the files and revert my keyboard to normal US international, so I have to copy-paste the layout again. Plus, I don't know if xkb is one day going to be deprecated, as it is part of X11, leaving me without my layout.

Is there any "proper" way to create a layout and have it recognized by Plasma possibily without editing system files?

Edit: It was built into the MX theme.

I just installed MX Linux KDE and there's a clock widget in the top right that I can't seem to remove. Also it seems to be persistent between workspaces. How can I get rid of this? It disappeared when I tried to edit the regular widgets and then came back when I was out of edit mode.

Any idea?
