It’s surprisingly hard to pin down exactly how Apple’s M1 compares to Intel’s x86 processors. While the chip family has been widely reviewed in a number of common consumer applications, inevitable differences between macOS and Windows, the impact of emulation, and varying degrees of optimization between x86 and M1 all make precise measurement more difficult.

The Chinese government is responding to dramatically increasing costs for coal and natural gas, both of which are used extensively in the country for electricity generation. Beijing is also reportedly unhappy about the failure of regional governments to hit targets for reducing emissions. Additionally, it’s not uncommon for China to order local shutdowns when air pollution levels increase, especially during events that attract foreign visitors.

City and regional governments have said that domestic energy usage is being prioritized over industrial use.

Right now with most Bluetooth tracker devices such as Tile (I've tried a few) they require you, and everyone else, to have the app installed in order to locate the lost device. That severely limits the potential reach and effectiveness.

If Apple's global network of devices are all able to function as locating devices to help find lost items, that will change the picture dramatically as the locating is then no longer dependent on who else has installed the same app. It will be interesting to see what hoops must be jumped through to participate, and also whether Android will go more global with something like this.

The program, which gives third-party repair providers access to genuine Apple parts, tools, repair manuals and diagnostics, was initially lunched in the U.S. in 2019, and expanded to Europe and Canada in 2020. This year, it will be available in more than 200 countries — "nearly" every country where Apple products are sold, Apple announced on Tuesday.

The repair providers that want to join the program can get free training from Apple, but they do have to commit to having an Apple-certified technician on duty (certification is also free). According to Apple, there are currently more than 1,500 Independent Repair Provider locations in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

I'll bet this is because of the heat around right-to-repair groups and accusations of monopolistic practices. But either ways it is a good thing for competition and boosting local economic development.

I sometimes show a mobile screen when I record videos and have been looking for something as easy to use as Android has through their emulator. I tried a few apps but most were quite clunky, and I have now got it down to RPiPlay (Linux desktops or for a Raspberry Pi) or installing the Windows version of 5KPlayer (installs and runs perfectly if you have WINE installed on Linux).

Both will work without any apps being installed on the iOS device (just use normal screen mirroring to AirPlay) mirror the screen and audio. Control remains on the iOS device though, so you can't use the mouse to control from the Linux side. Instructions for RPiPlay are at https://github.com/FD-/RPiPlay, but it installed from AUR for me on Manjaro Linux.

I was used to Watchmaker for some excellent 3rd party watch faces for Android WearOS but was a bit disappointed with the selection there for Apple Watch. After looking around a bit I discovered Clockology and was really impressed with some of the watch faces there.

The only issue many have, is how to install and use it properly because of Apple's idiosyncrasies, so this video does help explain that. One thing to note about the wake screen setting is the menu option has changed, so instead you long press on the watch face and choose Stay Alive.

Unfortunately many watch face groups are on Facebook but you need not login especially for the Hong Kong one, and there is also a sub reddit for Clockology.
