Like when I was a kid, seeing all the holiday decor around the neighborhood, the stores, the streets, always felt cozy. I don’t get that feeling anymore. I get the memory of it, but not the actual feeling. I don’t think I got jaded but maybe I did. What about you?

There are lots of cultural opposition movements online, like against work exploitation, consummerism, car culture, surveillance, intellectual property, etc. I can find communities on lemmy for all those topics. But regarding a more general opposition to advertisements and marketing, other than the occasional person telling others to use adblockers online (what about ads in every day life?), I fail to see organized attempts to challenge advertisements. There is a lot that can be scrutinized. Ethical concerns such as manipulation, lack of consent and just the simple fact your attention is for sale. The effects range from damage to environment, to our mental health, to harming industries themselves, lowering product quality and maintaining monopolies.

Things along the range of:

"Checklist - 1. Ensure that the thing is on."

I've seen stories of people who just don't get it and need their hands held all the time, so what are things where you kinda feel that things are a bit too "hand-holdy"?

Photos, journalist, audio recordings, video, blogging, printing photos, making music, posting online etc...

How do you record certain events? Make a journal entry? Just keep it in your memory to yourself?

How do you trust you wont forget the small details that you know today?

How do you trust the security of your documented life? your journal, your printed photos?

You you like analogue or digital documentation? Do you store data on HHDs? (they have a ~30 year lifespan) Mdisk? Photos? Pen and Paper?

Childhood memories? How do you view these archives?

Do you even believe in documenting the events of your life? Is it important to you? The quicker you write down an event, the more emotion you can convey.

What do you do and don't do?

I have a boss who tells us weekly that everything we do should start with AI. Researching? Ask ChatGPT first. Writing an email or a document? Get ChatGPT to do it.

They send me documents they "put together" that are clearly ChatGPT generated, with no shame. They tell us that if we aren't doing these things, our careers will be dead. And their boss is bought in to AI just as much, and so on.

I feel like I am living in a nightmare.

I want to test some tweaks to my adblocking, but those ad blocker test sites are crap, so give me your worst and let's see if I can see it clean lmao

Meg doesnt want to babysit Stewie

Meg: I could be out having a life.

Lois: Meg, if you don't want to babysit, that's fine, but don't you stand there and lie to me

Try to keep it practical (like something that would not be fairly doable, you just havent gotten around to it...yet)

Bonus question: What is an invention that was really important and there is no telling how long we would have to wait for it to appear had it not been discovered by the one credited with it?

I've been using Thunderbird to sort out my junk email for a while, ever since I walked away from my Gmail account. Thunderbird does a great job, but it does mean it has to stay running somewhere.

However I'm currently in the process of moving and as a result I've had to shut down the system that that I had been running Thunderbird on. The result of which, obviously, is that my inbox is now being flooded with spam.

Since it's been a while since I last looked at the problem, I figured I ask. How do you deal with spam email?
