Should we also boycott companies that basically do what Trump wants by making other nations pay the US tariffs? E.g. in the link you can read about Sony (Japan) and Xbox (Microsoft - US). I know Microsoft is already American, but it is another major manufacturer that is hiking prices globally.

Those are so far few companies, but I read that some clothing brands and even food markets are discussing about this option.

What do you think?

Anticircumvention laws are the reason no one can sell you a “jailbreaking” tool so your printer is able to recognise and use cheaper, generic ink cartridges. It’s why farmers couldn’t repair their own John Deere tractors until recently and why people who use powered wheelchairs can’t fix their vehicles, even down to minor adjustments like customising the steering handling.

These laws were made in the US but they are among America’s most successful exports. The US trade representative has lobbied — overtly in treaty negotiations; covertly as foreign legislatures debated their IP laws — for America’s trading partners to enact their own versions.

The quid pro quo: countries that passed such laws got tariff-free access to American markets.

With the tariffs being imposed at Trump's whim, it's worthwhile for the rest of the world to revisit their laws which limit peoples' ability to control the software on devices they own.

Hi all,

Moving away from USA solutions I also want a good European vpn. I contracted GOOSE because it's from my country, but their servers are spotty on mobile and I regularly have connection issues on my Linux.

I want a stable VPN, streaming and P2P enabled, from a European provider. Who has good options? Must be Linux compatible either through an app or OpenVPN/WireGuard.

Is proton a good option?

For EU citizens and residents: contact your local MEP.

The EU is a big ship and it takes time to turn around. That's fine and understandable, but I feel they haven't really understood the world has radicaly changed and they cannot hold onto the fairytale of US/EU cooperation, even if Trump is undone tomorrow, Hate towards us can come back in 4 or 8 years.

https://alternativeto.net/

AlternativeTo is a large database of software and online services focused on showing popular alternatives to applications. They have a lot of filters that you can use to find the right app for you and hopefully they will soon include an EU or country of origin filter!

Btw, it's a Swedish website.

So apparently Zalando is problematic, see https://lemmy.ml/post/29285005.

I liked it because they have plenty of brands and despite they made it more difficult some years ago, it was still possible to filter somewhat by environmental and ethical gradings.

Alternatives?

My 2yo nephew and his parents are moving to Latvia from overseas. I'd like to send the kid birthday and Christmas presents each year, and usually the easiest way to do this is by ordering a gift online within his country/region (I live in Australia and international shipping is expensive).

What are some European online shops that ship to Latvia? At his current age I'm mostly interested in books and toys, but may need more variety as he gets older. Bonus if the store offers gift certificates, as that may be the best option until they get settled.

Thanks!

Is it time to start an Infomaniak community on Lemmy to post news and Q&A?

I’ve recently picked Infomaniak for my buyeuropean/degoogling process and I think it’s pretty great, but the online dicussion is really limited compared to Proton or Tuta.

I'm looking for an alternative to duolingo, the main appeal for me of duolingo is the gamification of the app as this helps me to stay consistent (so just normal flashcards would not be suitable).

Thanks in advance
