I just subscribed on dimensions.com for cad silhouettes which has unlimited downloads but I'm trying to figure out a way to download the images automatically rather than individually opening and downloading each thing. if anyone has suggestions, id appreciate it!

I thought from vague memory that since running a SMART test is an internal routine, if you power it down and back up, the test should continue. After all, if you do a long test and any powerdown cancels it, that can be very impractical. If you want to cancel it, you can do so via command.

I started a long test and power cycles the device and checking status says

"The previous self-test routine completed without error or no self-test has ever been run."

And executing the -X command is also not very informative since it doesn't actually tell me whether there was any running test it canceled. It yields the same unspecific message every time.

I really want to do a full surface read test on a backup HDD but cannot depend on it running undisturbed for 12 hours.

I also ran an offline data collection but whenever I check it says it was interrupted by a host command, even though the drive isn't even mounted. (Activity LED on the dock starts coming on and stays on all the time, so that doesn't tell me whether it is actually running a test.)

Can any of this be related to running it in a USB dock?

I am an amateur photographer/videographer who also games and starting to get into running my own local data storage system. I'm planning on buying for now 2x12 or 2x14 TB iron wolf reds to pair with my Fedora 42 M1 Mac Mini. I have 1 PC at my main place and another PC at a different state. I want to be able to easily access large files and movies from both PCs, using the M1 Mac as sort of an access point through Tailscale which I already use.

I want:

  • Plex Server 24/7
  • Nightly backups from my main W11 PC to what I am planning on is a RAID 1 setup with the 2 HDDs (Note: I already have a 14TB WD external hdd that does nightly Veam backups).
  • Storage that is easily accessible from all my personal devices

I am currently stuck between the Terramaster D4-320 and the OWC Thunderbolt 4. I know the OWC is its own system so it would render my M1 Mac kinda useless. In that case, would the D4-320 be good enough for my use case?

Hi Everyone!

So i started to save and backup my and my wife images since 2018 i made som sort of system with digicam.

I backedup them in 2 cloud and in 2 hdd, ssd so the 3-2-1 method is done multiple times so wont lost if everything goes well :D and yeah we printed out a few pic for , but i read som par2 file for archives. For clouds i zipped(not for compressing) and encrypted(picocrypt(have reedsolomon) and cryptomator(for this it wasnt needed to zip)) the images (privacy thing) on the hdds i just copied with teracopy. If i leave these as it is the bit rot will harm? as i read with the par2 file im able to recover somwhat better % if bit rot happen.

how can i make these files if really needed? any good app what not commandline?

Thanks for any extra tips for these!

The size is 80gb nearly so not that big... :D but will be bigger because with childs the image number exponentially growth :D

I'm surprised how much it's going up over the last 5 years. You would think prices decrease over time

I saw a post about bit rot and it's had me thinking and a bit worried. I haven't touched a lot of the data on some of my drives in years, but StableBit Scanner has been running every week that whole time. Should I rely on that or should I look into other tools like Bitarr?

Edit: So StableBit Scanner does not prevent bit rot. It only checks the health of the drive, but not the health of the data(see comments) Would something like Bitarr be a good, free solution that doesn’t involve buying or changing to a different OS?

My sandisk daily usage usb died recently and I'm looking for a new one, I was browsing Amazon and came across one that looks decent (both specs and the form factor, I like having covers and shielding on my headers). it's the "SSK 512GB USB Flash Drive Up to 1000MB/s, Type C+USB-A External SSD USB 3.2 Gen 2 Portable SSD" (god I hate what SEO has done for amazon listings).

I don't know the brand, has anyone had any problems with their USBs? Has anyone done any tests on this SKU?

Hi everyone.

I'm trying to save every chess.com piece model SVG. Apart from the standard pieces, there are a plethora of other pieces called "fairy pieces", which are the non-standard ones, used in chess variants.

I tried searching online, but apparently chess.com changed the way they load pieces, so old tutorials on how to save them don't work anymore. I tried to inspect the page and locate the assets through JS files and CSS but I wasn't able to download them.

If any of you have another way to do it, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance to everyone.

The current archives available for leftypol miss a significant amount of threads and I was wondering if someone would be interested in making one like desuarchive which archives all 4chan blueboard threads.

I presently have 6 drives in a Jonsbo N5. The drives are about 2mm apart when in the system, and I'm having trouble keeping them cool. They are being cooled with 2x Arctic P12 PWM fans pegged at 100%.

In most NAS-type systems with adequate cooling (both inside and outside the case), your drives wouldn't surpass 40c. I ran an 8-bay Synology for years, and mid-30s temps were pretty normal. With the N5, the drives are getting close to 50c in this hot box. I noticed that the drives that don't sit between 2 other drives, like the ones on either end, run significantly cooler, like 4-5c cooler, than the sandwiched ones.

The case just does not provide adequate spacing, and thus cooling, to stack drives together. Anyone else with the N5 had issues with this? I suppose the only real fix would be a mod that gives you space to add 2 more 120mm fans to the front panel.

If you were on the fence about buying this case, you may want to think twice.

I have avoided all hardware RAID boxes and configurations for years because of them being a single point of failure. If the hardware box fails, you're hooped trying to get parts or replacements to access your data. Happened to us once before at a software company and lost our data.

I'm trying to figure out the best approach that doesn't have this issue - What alternative options do I have? Does software RAID work well under windows, or do you need a special MB for that?

I'm trying to centralize my backups (currently spread across multiple systems/drives/operating systems) and need a way for network storage access (accessing via usb thunderbolt would be a bonus).

I've heard about Synology locking in their proprietary drives (which seems like madness). Is Synology still the way to go? Is it safe to buy alternatives like UGreen?

Just a quick reminder to everyone: this happened to my free tier account. Even though the files were only for testing purposes, it’s so cringe to have a policy that deletes files after such a short period.

Feel free to do whatever you like with them, but please avoid anything that needs to be kept long-term.

Hello fellow hoarders. I've gotten into gathering entertainment not too long ago and my 1tb SSD is filling up. I've got a bunch of movies, songs, shows, comics, and books downloaded from Soulseek alone, and now I need to expand before I start torrenting.

My current setup is a 1tb SSD for games and a 1tb SSD for everything else including Windows, applications, and entertainment.

My total budget for the expansion is around $300 for now, and I'd like to get 2 drives if I can so that I can have a backup, but I can get a slightly more expensive drive and save to get another one a bit later to have the backup.

From reading comments here, it seems like serverpartdeals is the best place to save some money on drives while not taking too many risks, so I think I'll get them from there.

Looking at the prices, it seems like my budget allows for 12-14TB per drive. However, I'm pretty confused because the prices vary a lot even throughout the same capacity drives.

So, I was wondering if I could get some assistance in my purchase. I was also curious if I should use RAID or a backup software? It seems like a backup software might make more sense since if I make a mistake on one of the drives, the backup won't copy it right away, so I can revert it. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I forgot to mention that I just set up a Jellyfin server, and I'm now thinking about getting a low TDP device like a raspberry pi or something to run it 24/7, and an HDD enclosure to connect it to. (So I would set up the Jellyfin server on the low TDP computer and just leave it, do my entertainment gathering on my PC, and transfer it to the HDD enclosure so that it gets put into the Jellyfin library automatically [if that's possible]). Please let me know if there is a better way to do this :)

I need 18 TiB exos drive and server part deals ran out of them. I went to eBay for it but this seems too good to be true. 5 years of warranty on refurbished model!! Can anyone confirm if they have bought from here?

I've decided to go the route of DAS over NAS, but dont really understand what im looking for in said DAS. Is there much difference in the enclosures? The biggest thing i seem to be able to tell is some have hardware RAID which i would like to avoid. I would like RAID which is do able on a DAS with software right? Is there a brand i should avoid? I'm guessing not cause as far as i know Its just a box that makes all of the hard drive look like one? Or do the HDDs still show as individual when its plugged into my pc? Im looking at terramaster right now as its got a sale on their 4bay, but with my lack of understanding i dont want to pull the trigger before i know what im looking for and understand what im buying.

We all heard about it: multiple backups. SSD is slightly worst in terms of longevity compared to HDD. Nothing is perfect. Etc..

But what are some practices to extend SSD longevity? Are there any programs to refresh the bits? Or how often or how long should you take it out of your hiddy hole and let a charge run through? Or your hiddy hole should be dry as a bone?

I am thinking of getting one soon and am genuinely curious. I plan to hide it in a thermos and only take it out to backup all my important doc once a month.

Up until recently, using the shortcut as described on archiveapp would display an archived news article in a clean UI. Now, it simply uses the normal interface of archive.today. Any idea why this change happenedm

I have used archive.today forany years and just learned about ghostarchive. In very limited uses, they seem very similar. In one case, for a very recent article, archive.today already had it saved while ghost had to go out and fetch. Maybe this implies something about archive.today's timeliness or user base?

What are any known differences between the two? Strengths, weaknesses?
