I have a Ugreen DXP4800 Plus with four 10TB WD Red Plus drives set up in a raid 5 configuration. I'm a newbie to all this NAS business, but want to upgrade my drives to the biggest possible drives. I just ordered two 28tb seagate exos (ST28000NM000C) drives off serverpartdeals.com. From reading around on reddit, it seems like these drives are still pretty new and are HAMR drives so people are unsure of their quality and longevity. I guess my main question is if I replace two of my 10tb drives with these and rebuild my raid, if there are any failures with either of the two new drives can I put the either of the original two 10tb drives back in with no data loss? If everything goes well I plan to get two more 28TB drives and take the four 10TB drives plus a few more drives and build another NAS for off-site backup in a raid 6 configuration.

Just finished scanning roughly 600 photos of assorted size and shape and nearly all need to be cropped to get rid of small/large/skewed white borders. I didnt pay it much mind during the scanning as i assumed there would be plenty of apps that do this automatically. I was wrong :o

Does such a tool exist anywhere?

Thanks.

i have a beelink eq14 n150 and i purchased 2 ORICO M.2 PCIe M Key to 6 x SATA

only 1 slot works with the adapter and its not a broken one because i can swap them and they both do work. 1 slot is labeled M.2 PCIe Gen3 x1 / SATA III socket and the other is M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4 socket. the slot that works is the gen 3x1 slot.

im trying to connect 8 14 tb seagate exos hard drives and 1 2tb ssd

at this point im looking into converting it to usb c im so lost or finding a low power motherboard/cpu that can "fit" in a 10 inch rack

I currently have an Intel/Solidigm D7-P5620 (3.2TB) installed in my nas using a simple PCIe to u.2 adapter card (no cables, SSD is mounted straight to the card). I'm considering getting a couple of 4TB P4510 drives as I can get them for a pretty good deal, and I'd like to have the option to add up to a couple more, so four in total, in the future. My board has 3 PCIe gen 3 x16 slots, which can run at x8/x8/x4 with 3 devices connected.

All that said, what would be a reasonable solution that allows PCIe 3.0 x8 -> 4 U.2 NVME drives? Is a simple aliexpress board without any real electronics like what I already have to convert pcie to 1x u.2 but that splits to more devices sufficient? Should I add another HBA, or is there an option I'm overlooking? Thanks.

Full parts list in case it affects this:

i5-10500

64GB DDR3

z490 aorus master

LSI 9211-8i -> 4x SATA hard drives, 4x SAS hard drives

Solidigm P5620 in 2nd pcie slot

What it says on the tin! I collect weird clickbait and scam ads--especially old Flash ads from the 2000s-- and I'm working on a site archiving all the ads I've found. These things are absurd, and I wanted a way to embed them on my site in all their glory. Living in a post-Flash society didn’t leave me with many options, so (with help from ChatGPT) I built Flash Archiver.

Using Ruffle, Flash Archiver lets me browse my collection of swfs (stored in a specific GitHub repo), load them into the UI, and generate iframe embed codes to use on external sites. NOTE--this doesn't work on Wordpress free version. It does work on Blogspot and Wikidot, and probably a bunch of sites I haven't tried.

I can also use Flash Archiver to upload my local swfs to Github for storage, though manually uploading the swfs into their folder in the repo is probably more efficient. I can also just load my already-uploaded swfs into the UI and interact with them there. I tested an old Super Mario flash game on it and I could play it successfully right in the UI.

When I was researching solutions before building this, I saw a bunch of people across the internet looking for the same thing I was, so I wanted to build something sharable. The GitHub repo is totally set up for cloning/forking (either should work). All you need is a GitHub account, a GitHub credential token with a limited scope, and some swfs to get it running. There's a ReadMe on the repo page that walks you through it.

Just as a heads-up, this is an early build (I literally put it together in my free time over the last two days), so there may be bugs I haven't found. I already know about a minor bug where an error text reading "file already exists" gets mangled when you press the upload button again. It's running really smoothly for me, but YMMV.

If you use it, feel free to provide feedback and let me know if it was useful! I'm adding some screenshots in the comments. I had a lot of fun making this :)

ETA: I forgot to mention both the archives and the frames work perfectly on mobile too!

Second ETA: also, the embeds fully support the original animations’ sound effects/music/etc

I’ve been building a tool that tracks real-time HDD prices and SSD prices - new, refurbished, and used — across eBay (worldwide) and Amazon, and organizes them in a way that’s actually usable.

It monitors over 50,000 listings, ranks them by cost per terabyte, and can also sort by real-time popularity based on buyer activity. It updates constantly and stays fast.

Some of its highlights:

  • Sort by $/TB: you can choose to include or exclude multi-drive lots
  • True $/TB calculation: detects lots with high accuracy, and includes shipping
  • Sort by “Hot now”: based on what’s rapidly selling in the past few days / hours
  • Capacity filters: e.g. show only drives ≥ 8TB
  • Amazon comparison: if the same drive exists on Amazon, shows if it’s cheaper, equal, or pricier - with direct link, and indication if it is new, used or refurbished
  • Keyword Filter: You can filter to listings that only include a certain keyword in their title (e.g. SATA, SSD, etc), and also exclude any keyword by using a hyphen before that keyword. You should use it if you wish to to filter for certain interface, physical size, brand and so on.
  • Seller insights: see if the seller has sold drives before and whether they were praised for them
  • Listing previews: all key info shown directly, so you don’t have to open multiple tabs
  • Popular seller filters: You can filter for sellers you trust, or discover what sellers are most active in each category
  • Email alerts: Set rules like “<$10/TB + keyword SATA” and be the first to discover about any new listing that suits that criteria
  • International support: Works for U.S., EU, Canada, UK, Australia, etc. You can change currency using the same drop down menu where you choose your region.
  • Optimized speed: runs smooth despite fresh data from tens of thousands of listings

Link in first comment.

If you find it helpful, please drop a comment - it helps me stay motivated to keep building and improving it.

If you run a blog, GitHub profile, or anything similar, a small link to the tool would go a long way in keeping it alive.

If you want better coverage for something specific, or a new feature, please leave a comment - I try to prioritize new features based on actual demand.

P.S this project also covers other categories like GPUs, CPUs, memory, and more - you can switch using the category dropdown.

Hey everyone,

I had an old laptop that I recently upgraded by installing a new SSD. I removed the old HDD from that laptop and placed it in a USB enclosure so I could use it as an external drive and access my previous data.

When I connect the enclosure to my current system, Windows does detect it as a mass storage device (I can see it in Device Manager and "Safely Remove Hardware"), but nothing shows up under This PC / File Explorer — no drive letter, no access to files.

I don’t want to format the drive, since it has important data I need to recover.

Has anyone faced this issue before? What steps should I take to safely access or recover the data from this drive?

Thanks in advance!

Based in the UK and want to record a few snippets of something on All4 for a personal project. I have the show on DVD but the edit is different for licensing reasons, and any third party copies of the original cut are poor quality off-air recordings from the better part of twenty years ago.

All4 is unfortunately very robust when it comes to screen recording to the point that it even black-screens you trying to take a screenshot (Though not for adverts, which is a p*sstake frankly).

Does anybody have any software recommendations? My go to is OBS, which works a treat for BBC iPlayer when I need clips for the same reason but it has the same black-screening issue for All4.

I've been wanting to make a collection of art for personal use/storage, however this has proven harder than downloading music from composers in large amounts such as Mozart, Bach, etc.

For example I couldn't find a website that had all the works of an artist, for example Gustav Klimt, available for download. At least not in batch/download all options. Only downloading every work separately which is time consuming.

I have come across books in the Internet Archive which had many works but are limited by login and can only be borrowed. I am not necessarily interested in books which are products and have copyrights, I am more so interested in the works of art themselves such as the paintings in the highest quality possible. I won't use these for any commercial purposes whatsoever, that is not at all my intention, merely personal storage and appreciation.

I've seen quality images of some artists work on wikipedia but so far I'm not sure wikipedia has all the works of these artists or only a limited selection of examples, also I haven't tried downloading all works from wikipedia, not sure about the right tool for that.

I mainly use Jdownloader2 for basically everything so far and it has proven to be a very good and versatile tool however it obviously doesn't support every website and sometimes requires tuning or cookies to properly extract certain elements from a page.

I would appreciate if someone who has downloaded or also keeps art/full works of artists has any recommendations of websites with great options of full downloads or full works in good quality that can be downloaded, and any tools necessary for such a feat.

Also if you can recommend me a way to search in Internet Archive for these types of works, for example all works of a painter in image format and high quality, in zip or torrent, I would also appreciate. So far all I find, when I find it, are books from museums...

Thanks.

Hello! Quick question for y'all. I got a 20 TB Seagate Barracuda recently. I had been using it for under a month in my PC internally, and the other day it simply stopped spinning up. I put it in a USB dock and it didn't work with that either. I can kind of hear a noise when I plug it in, but it's very faint. Maybe it's the motor trying to spin up? Not sure.

Any idea why this could by? I've read about people disabling the 3.3V pin on the SATA power connector with shucked drives - would this technique help with my drive since it was purchased as an internal drive? I would try it, but just left on a trip. Are there any ideas for any other things I could try? I just had some files on the drive I'd like to get back that I hadn't backed up yet.

Thanks so much! I should've bought an enterprise drive. I used to test new drives before starting to use them but fell out of the habit lol.

Hey guys, I'm Building my first Unraid NAS Mainly for my Plex Library. I'm On a relatively tight budget bud I gave my best for good enough components.

i5 12600k 173€;

ASrock Z690 Riptide 120€;

Patriot Signatue Line 32 GB 51€;

2 x Patriot P400 LITE SSD 1 TB, M.2 2280 110€ (DRAM less - does it matter?);

be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 550 W 90€;

Thermalright AX120R 17€;

Aerocool Cipher bk-v1 86€ (Proud I found that one lol);

Existing 20TB HDDs

I want to use the NAS for plex, Hosting Teamspeak and Minecraft. Data security is not the highest priority bacause it's not that sensible. Power consumption is also not a priority because anything is better than my gaming rig running 24/7 wich it is right now. Anyway if read online, that two SSDs should be in there? My understanding is that Unraid will use these SSDs mirrored as storage for docker and my server files. Does it also automatically cache file thumbnails etc for faster file browsing? Also what usb stick should I use for Unraid?

I'm sorry if that a nightmare to read through, but it's my first time doing such a project.

I see it's said that an SSD's data retention without power time goes down after the drive's TBW is exceeded and this leads me to assume there is a link between how many write cycles a drive is built to endure and its ability to keep the data when not powered. So in two drives with the same capacity but different TBW ratings data retention time without power would be higher in the higher-rated TBW drive. Is this true?

I'm seeking advice how to better implement RAID 10 for two HDDs. Don't ask me why RAID 10, I need it for future easy expansion of my array, something that is not possible on RAID 1. I'm checking options and it seems the only option I have is pure mdadm. All the home cloud solutions I tried (CasaOS, ZimaOS, Cosmos Cloud, UmbrelOS) are missing RAID 10 support or do not support RAID at all. Is there any user-friendly distro or wrapper like CasaOS with a 1-click RAID setup? I treat myself as a novice in home cloud, so I want minimum manual configuration. I do not seek ZFS solutions, I do not seek TrueNAS or Proxmox, so please don't propose them. Only Linux-native solutions based on MDADM.

Orico seems to level-up (wanting at least) from pure enclosures to a true NAS solution however they still need to fix some things here and there as can be read here in this review.

Although not enterprise/professional leage, I thought I bring this article here for the home users as "hmm interesting".

Maybe we will see some cheap-good complete NAS solutions in the upcoming years from them too, among some already existing more expensive ones.

Enjoy.

(I have no affiliates with Orico or Nascompares or anything else mentioned).

Hey, so I am in the process of pulling the offline installers from GOG and I intend to keep them long term. But some of these installers are 100GB+ and I do not need these on my computer. currently these are going onto a portable ssd, but this is a very low capacity one I had sitting around. It got me thinking, if it's gonna be something that never gets rewritten and is gonna end up across multiple devices anyway... Why not put them individually on low profile usb's or microsd cards, then keep a physical archive folder like we did in the days of CD's, (or like switch gamers do). So my question is, which should I do this in? I'm leaning towards Microsd because of the size and consistent form factor no matter which brand but what are your arguments for or against these?

I have had a 16TB for ages, where I keep a variety of movies/tv shows and random files from other drives (this is the way) I connected it tonight, to power and attempted to plug it into my Mac, with no success. I changed the cord several times, until realising it was something to do with the power.

I have an external docking station, and after struggling with it for hours to get it powered on, I eventually said F it and tore it to shreds.

Thankfully I plugged it in, and it works. But it was just frustrating and I didn’t see any other option.

Hi all, I wanted to make  a tool I've been developing: Kemono Downloader. It's meant to be an end-to-end download solution from Kemono and Coomer, loaded with features that will put you in complete control. You can download from creator or post URLs and apply strong filters to scrape content only for certain characters (with group and alias aliases supported), Skip posts containing particular keywords, and choose file types such as images, videos, or archives. For sequential content, a really useful Manga Mode is available that automatically keeps files in order and renames them. It also features high-end options such as powerful folder structuring, multithreading to make it faster, cookie support to access favorite content, an inbuilt error-handling mechanism to re-attempt failed files, and even UI personalization with themes and multiple language support. Hope you'll find it helpful!

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to locate a specific Mastodon post from a few months ago. Luckily it was on a rather small server, so I'd be able to find it if I could just pull in the data.

It seems Snscrape has been abandoned, so I'm looking for an alternative before trying to coax an LLM into cooking something up.

Thanks

Ive been sreaching continuously for more than 3 hours rn trying to download this book called (Ready to print: Handbook for Media Designers)

link: https://archive.org/details/readytoprinthand0000nick/page/14/mode/2up

I have it borrowed for 16 days and it showed and option to download as an LCP PDF which is the first time i've come across sth like that. Downloading the file results in a .Icpl file. I tried searching for ways to convert that file but all my metiods failed.

At the end i came across JDownloader 2 and i had hope but was soon crushed to find only 11/286 jpegs actually downloaded with the others showing an error of "Offline Files".

I tried to search for ways to override that but cant seem to understand how. I also found people saying sth along the lines of copying the .php file from Network in Inpector on the website then pasting it to terminal and adding an O at the end and it should download but doing that resulted in nothing on my end so idk if i'm doing sth wrong.

It's 5 am atp and i'm both tired and desperate, any help would legit be appreciated. Thank you all lovely people in advance < 3
