Average Lemmy enjoyers:

[Matthew] Broderick plays David Lightman, a young computer hacker who unwittingly accesses a United States military supercomputer programmed to simulate, predict and execute nuclear war against the Soviet Union, triggering a false alarm that threatens to start World War III.

... It was a widespread critical and commercial success, grossing $125 million worldwide against a $12 million budget. At the 56th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay. ... WarGames is credited with popularizing concepts of computer hacking, information technology, and cybersecurity in wider American society.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WarGames

It also helped popularize the concept of computer gaming, which was still in its early days back then. Specifically, by showing that they could be more than arcade-style games like Galaga, and be more sophisticated interactive simulations. And while there had been several movies with AI characters in it before, this was the first one that involved needing to teach an AI, in a way that resonates with later machine-learning approaches. Also, the whole concept of someone who was "really into computers", and who might thereby influence the world, was still very new.

RIP Dabney Coleman, btw.

This is the best film about a 13th century zen master that you're likely to see in a while. OK, maybe that's too specific. Anyway, if you're at all interested in Asian history or Buddhism, this is for you.

Russell Edwards of Variety described it as "The origins of a spiritual tradition are depicted with prerequisite solemnity and a pleasing veneer of arthouse showmanship."[5] Mark Schilling, writing for The Japan Times, gave the film three and a half stars and described it as a "rare serious film about this form of Buddhism, which has had a huge cultural influence but is little understood — let alone practiced — by ordinary Japanese."

Yippee-ki-yay, motherfuckers, it's Christmas in July!

Die Hard follows New York City police detective John McClane (Willis) who is caught up in a terrorist takeover of a Los Angeles skyscraper while visiting his estranged wife.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Hard

One of the reasons this movie has endured is because it's so well written. Exposition is handled smoothly (through various natural conversations), minor characters are personalized briefly and efficiently, and the suspense just doesn't let up.

Another reason is Alan Rickman.

Zulu is a 1964 British epic adventure action war film depicting the Battle of Rorke's Drift between a detachment of the British Army and the Zulu in 1879, during the Anglo-Zulu War, in which 150 British soldiers, 30 of whom were sick and wounded, at a remote outpost, held off a force of 4,000 Zulu warriors.

... By 2007, critics were divided over whether the movie should be seen as deeply anti-imperialist or as racist.[32] ... In 2010, Alex von Tunzelmann of The Guardian gave the film a grade of B, saying: "The Zulus are a mystery, the Welsh are misplaced, a Victoria Cross recipient is slandered, and no one has enough facial hair. Nonetheless, Zulu is a brilliantly made dramatisation of Rorke's Drift, and it does a fine job of capturing the spirit for which the battle is remembered."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zulu_(1964_film)

tbh I found it hard to empathize with the British. But it was interesting to watch two-rank and three-rank volley fire being executed, especially as compared to the Zulu rifle use. (Although note there are limits to the historical accuracy of the film.) There was also a class conflict theme between the two British officers, one an upper-class "inheritor" of his post, the other a military engineering officer who achived his post more meritocratically. And of course there were distinctions between the English, the Welsh, the Boers, and their allied "native contingent". Overall, this movie is great as a starting point to inspire further reading, less so as a work that makes a worthwhile point by itself.

[Chuck] Norris plays karate champion Matt Logan, who is hired to assist an anti-narcotics police unit, who are being targeted by a killer.

OK, Chuck Norris is a far-right extremist. But this movie is from early in his career and it has a couple interesting things.

First, it was made during a time when karate and Asian martial arts in general were still being introduced to the US. This was way before MMA, and not too long after Bruce Lee's movies, and karate is depicted as a mix of "mysterious fighting arts", in-a-ring kickboxing, and after-school activity for kids.

Second, it has some interesting costars: Ron O'Neal who starred in the 1972 blaxploitation movie Super Fly (and who later had a memorable supporting role in the 1984 movie Red Dawn) among others. And Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, an early star of American kickboxing.

So it's not bad as a "background noise" kind of movie.

  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvR7j69knwE the link from above. GLITCHES: this movie pauses for a second or two, like 4-5 times at the start of the movie every 15 minutes or so, but it quits doing that after a while.

In a retrospective review of the Dollars Trilogy, Paul Martinovic of Den of Geek said, "For A Few Dollars More is often overlooked in the trilogy, awkwardly sandwiched between both the original film and the best-known, but it's a stunning film in its own right."[30] Paolo Sardinas of MovieWeb said, "Eastwood gives it his all and turns in another iconic performance along with scene stealer Lee Van Cleef, who helps make For a Few Dollars More twice as good as its predecessor."[31] Film historian Richard Schickel, in his biography of Clint Eastwood, believed that this was the best film in the trilogy, arguing that it was "more elegant and complex than A Fistful of Dollars and more tense and compressed than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". Director Alex Cox considered the church scene to be one of "the most horrible deaths" of any Western, describing Volonté's Indio as the "most diabolical Western villain of all time".[32]
