  • Scientists from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute are collaborating with local communities in the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca, a protected Indigenous territory, to foster a ground-up reforestation strategy using native trees and carbon payments.
  • The project involves about 30 plots totaling 100 hectares (247 acres) of land, giving participants full ownership of their trees.
  • The approach is based on carbon-sequestration data and other scientific metrics collected from Smithsonian’s Agua Salud research site in Colón.
  • The work also leans on economic analyses to ensure that reforestation projects can become reliable and sustainable livelihood strategies for Panama’s rural communities.

The title of a 2,000-year-old Greek philosophical text has been read by computer scientists using AI to study scrolls buried by the eruption of Vesuvius.

I've heard of similar tech being used to decipher text from the dead sea scrolls, it's awesome to see these advances happening.

The latest data, for the first quarter of 2025, shows that China’s CO2 emissions have now been stable or falling for more than a year, as shown in the figure below.

However, with emissions remaining just 1% below the recent peak, it remains possible that they could jump once again to a new record high.

Outside of the power sector, emissions increased 3.5%, with the largest rises in the use of coal in the metals and chemicals industries.

Sector-by-sector analysis suggests that, in addition to the power sector, emissions have likely also peaked in the building materials and steel sectors, as well as oil products consumption.

The endangered little tern has experienced one of its best recorded breeding seasons across New South Wales, sparking hope among conservationists.

Each spring, the small seabirds migrate thousands of kilometres across the ocean from East and South-east Asia to nest on Australian shores.

They lay eggs directly on the sand where they are so well camouflaged they become almost invisible, making them vulnerable to beach visitors and cars.

They are also at risk from predators, flooding and, adverse weather conditions.

For the past 25 years, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has been involved in trying to conserve and monitor the species.

The NPWS said since 2019 the breeding population had more than doubled...[story continues]

Wow these sure are some cute birds whomst I am glad are rebounding. (Surely this makes up for grumping on the beagles story...)

Amidst the dry and arid city of Bharuch in Gujarat, there exists a remarkable house that defies the norm of blasting coolers and air conditioners to beat the heat. Unlike most households, this unique abode manages to remain comfortably cool without any of these devices.
