I know many have asked about this, so I figured I would make the definitive list:

Asura:

Asura is obviously the most difficult one because we don’t have a real life basis on what Asura are and their body structure.

Except we do; it’s elephants, Asura are elephant people but because they can’t have fun without committing war crimes, so the eternal alchemy punished them by removing their trunk. Their feet are the same, their skin, and their smell.

Case a: elephant hooves to Asura Money Makers:

Elephant Hoof

Asuran Money Makers

Elephant meat is high in fat content, and taste wise ranges the gamut of a delicacy and garbage, with one consistent line of it being tough when cooked over an open fire, and a few videos of it being barbecued like a pulled pork.

What I would make: Since I would be divorced and arrested if I attempted to buy or eat elephant, I would use the high fat content to its best, and make chicharron and guacamole

Now you, as a bafoon might ask, avocados don’t grow around rata sum! To that I would say that they don’t for gameplay reasons but the maguuma jungles would have the fauna for avocados to still exists, doubly so in the deep maguuma jungle, where both megafauna and asura have been. There is a easy chance that normal asuran food culture involves avocado, especially for a culture that values knowledge and science probably at the expense of eating, a food that is filling and high in nutrients and fat content would be especially useful.

For frying fat you could render down the asuran feet (elephant hooves are high in fat, so there’s a chance you can make asura tallow). Mix it with some guacamole made with sharp red onions and spicy jalapeños to cut down on that rich high fat bite and you’ll be eating good.

Rating: So Tasty!

Charr:

Charr have a great deal of parallels to animals we can devour, mostly bovine and feline. Unfortunately it might not be great mix, cat meat isn’t particularly appetizing, and not many cultures eat a big cat like a leopard, tiger, or bob cat. It seems like the muscle makeup is more geared towards the feline, than the bovine. Add to that the culture of the Charr does not lead to many fat cats.

Except one.

Evon Gnashblade has gotten fat (both metaphorically and physically) off of our hard work and luck, and would make some great meal

What I would make: Stewed Charr-tail. We know that Charr like spice (hatch peppers in grothmar valley) so dolyak tail seems not too far out of the question. We could look towards ascalonian cooking, but their cooking was boring before the searing and ebonhawke thinks anything outside of pemmican is fancy feast. Make it with a gnashblade tail and you’ve got something delicious.

Rating: Pretty solid

Human:

Everyone knows long pork is delicious, to the point where they’ve made up fictitious brain parasites to make sure you don’t eat your neighbor. That’s an easily known fact.

The real question is, which region of tyria would taste the best?

Krytan:

Boring Krytan Food

Though this seems like an easy choice, there are two major issues. One, Krytan food is pretty boring, divinities reach is a great and cool city, but you’re not going there on vacation to try the food, especially compared to New Kaineng and Amnoon. They do carnivals though, which are solid

Two, Kryta currently must be going through some deep food shortages, lake Doric is ruined and bloodstone poisoned, Viathan Lake in Kessex Hills is poisoned, the major human areas that haven’t been as effected by recent history, Gendarran Hills, isn’t even part of the Krytan dominion! Malnourished people does not a tasty meal make.

Elonian: their food seems amazing, but we run into the same problem with scarcity and malnutrition, they’re doing better than the Krytans (and no scandal like Queen Jenna “giving the Charr cake” at the latest alliance meeting), but just have issues with the lack of living people infrastructure in territories that belonged to Joko.

Elonian Meat Market, look at those tasty cuts!

Cantha: they’re doing great food scarcity wise, it seems even those in the poor houses can get meals easily and cheaply, even if there are other issues that do not pertain to the question. Food quality wise is also exceptionally good.

Canthan food stand, with good food steaming, and not a indivdual to be seen, so it's safe to say you can take the food it's free.

So odds are cantha is the answer, they seem to be doing the best generally, minus the fading resource they rely on.

What I would make: To try to incorporate all three cultures I think the easiest way would be long pork skewers, one for each culture

Krytan skewers smoked and on a rotisserie with no sauce salt and pepper basted with drippings

Elonian skewers marinated with Choya and spices, coated with more and blackened over a fire

Canthan skewers marinated with gojuchang and while cooking dressed with a spicy sweet sauce

Rating: So Tasty!

Norn:

If humans are cows, Norn are moose, leaner, more muscle, and a hell of a lot more gamier, I don’t have a great opinion on what Norn meat would be, the Norn have no food shortages, but their build would not make great food, simple as that.

What I would make: another low and slow method, we’d really want that lean meat’s gelatin to melt and help that meat out

I’d make a Norn short rib stew with parsnips, rutabagas, some leeks for some greens, and to brighten it up with some winterberries for acid, sweetness and some color pop!

Rating: Fine

Sylvari:

Sylvari it seems don’t have meat, but if they don’t what do they have underneath the layers of salad? The Asura tried to find out, one of the  unambiguously good things they have done in the story but sadly they were unsuccessful.

Since they aren’t meat but they do have parts of their body that act as muscle, I’m going to make the wild leap of logic and treat their meat as the closest vegan equivalent, Jackfruit. Jackfruit has what looks like it could be a structure close to muscles (it isn’t), and it’s close enough for me!

What would I make: This one is an easy choice, I’d make pulled Sylvari meat bbq, a sweet and smokey sauce and then get some papaya slaw on a bun, nothing too fancy, but it would be a tasty bite.

Rating: Pretty Solid

To summarize, from best to worst

  1. Asuran chicharrones with guacamole
  2. Human skewers trio
  3. Sylvari pulled ‘muscle’ sandwich with papaya slaw
  4. Charr tail stewed
  5. Norn short rib stew with tubers and winterberries

Thank you for coming to my Isgarren Talk.

Sorry I can't remove the rewards screen but... the story continues as normal however you can revive this NPC and talk to him, his dialogue is about his dog and him joining the pact. You can see the other npcs still mourn him and everything!

"He's still alive, look! Why... why is everyone crying?"

So I dropped wow cause I’m tired of the FOMO and monthly subscription, GW2 so far is a lot of fun. I have a couple of level 80 characters now, but I’m struggling to find things to do. I know there’s a lot of content out there, but there’s no direction on what benefits come from where, nor do I know where to even begin looking to browse potential rewards/cosmetics/etc.

One of the things I loved most in wow was to just farm old content for appearances and mounts. What is the GW2 equivalent of this? I am a busy dad of two and can only contribute maybe 20 minutes per day on the weekdays, and maybe an hour on Saturdays and Sundays. I’m just looking for something to do that’s chill and earns my account new cosmetic appearances. Something repeatable and that can be worked on in small increments at a time.

I heard the GW2 community is very friendly so hopefully my question doesn’t set off any torches and pitchforks, thank you.

Homesteads are getting closer to being a year old since their inception. They have brought many joys, but also with them, many complaints and worrying concepts. This is basically my thoughts and feedbacks on the homestead system as it currently stands.

The Good:

  • Plenty of choices, with more coming every patch.
  • Placement tools let you edit size, orientation, horizontal and vertical placement, and have 45 degree rotate option by holding shift before rotating.
  • Tons of space to decorate.
  • Allows you to visit from almost anywhere
  • Allows people to join from outside the instance
  • CATS, siege turtle, and other home instance collectibles appear here
  • Can move objects inside other objects allowing you to "hide" things or combine objects in unique ways.
  • Can park alts in homestead to show off outfits.

The Bad:

  • Some gem shop homestead bundles are unfairly priced (meditative should only be 500 gems due to having 2 rocks as part of its kit)
  • No "snap to object" function allowing easy alignment and connecting of objects (in particular walls, floors, roofs, etc...)
  • Time gated resources required for EVERYTHING. (not necessary for everything in my opinion)
  • Can't move cats, nodes, or other permanently placed objects like the house itself, handiwork station, gatherables, and some of the trees.
  • Can't park characters in specific spots, and they get shuffled in designated "armor type" areas upon loading in.
  • Cost of some goods are concerning and inconsistent with guild hall counterpart (raid decorations are a huge example of this)

The WHY?!:

  • Weekly cap on resource needed to craft literally anything for your homestead.
  • Some resources for recipes are still ABSURDLY costed like the Visage of Grenth
  • Some items are even more gated not by time, but also community disparity (like raid tokens)
  • Can only have 5 people in the homestead at once, (seriously let me have a squad in here with THIS MUCH SPACE)
  • Use of tier 6 materials in general in non legendary decoration recipes (like the elegant wall panel needing 40 elaborate totems)
  • Inconsistent cost of "homestead refined material" in production of various items that serve similar function (Like the elegant wall panel needing 30 metal as opposed to gem shop sea raider wall needing only 5 fiber and 5 wood).
  • Only allow for 20 weapon stands max (there are over 20 legendary weapons in the game even if we're just counting first gen legendaries, please let us show off our wealth.)
  • Weapon and armor stands only copy what is equipped to current character. (this could be made better by just working as a wardrobe function instead where you select the weapon or armor piece, then among the skins you currently have. Can even have it restricted to light heavy and medium since we can't really mix and match skins in general from other armor classes.)

All in all I'm happy they added homesteads and have done what they have shown in more updates, but I do think it could be better, Let me know some of your thoughts as well, I'm sure I missed a few points to include.

Just a simple thank you post to everyone who ran with my open tag this last week.

I usually only tag up occasionally, whether pugmanding or with a guild, but I wanted to make a special point of tagging up during NA daytime hours every day during this WvW rush event, to see if we could harness the added numbers this event always brings, and see how much fun we could have together while people earn their Gifts of Battle etc.

Pugmanding is a lot of work at the best of times.  It’s just not realistic to expect everyone to even join squad, let alone get on voice comms.  So there’s a lot of rushed, badly spelled typing going on in map chat, to make sure everyone is included.  Things are often so fluid, always changing, that it’s hard to keep up sometimes.

But man, even under those circumstances, when you get 30+ randoms following you, and you push out into another group, and they actually follow you in, and we actually get downs, and sometimes even against guild groups, that’s the true “Rush” of a WvW rush, with a capital R.

Or when hitting a defended keep head-on, and they build defensive siege, and we pull back around a blind corner pretending to run away, and then turn and burn on them when they run out to chase us.

Or when we’re wailing on a lord and an EWP is pulled, and we actually move off the lord to hit the incomings as they appear, rather than letting them gather first.

Or when we have scouts pulling our EWPs at just the right times as needed, so we can bounce across the map defending against multiple groups at once.

Or even when people are utilising team chat for actual intel instead of the usual trollage nonsense, so we can even bounce between maps to respond to callouts.

All of which we’ve done this last week.

You never win them all, and sure we died a bunch of times, you gotta expect that.  But I’ve also collected hundreds of my own bags along the way, as well as completing a pile of reward tracks, along with the rest of us.

It honestly blows my mind that we were actually as successful as we were, considering we were all a bunch of strangers on the internet, many of whom were playing WvW for the first time, running who knows what random builds.

But when you get newbies openly celebrating finishing their GoBs, or laughing at their suddenly full inventory, or even hardened PvErs saying things like “wow, that was almost… fun,” you know you’ve done all right.

I have enjoyed many good individual days in WvW over the years, with various guilds over the years.  But I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun in WvW across an entire week, as I have this last week, and certainly not while pugmanding throughout, that’s for damn sure.

So thanks again everyone for an amazing rush event, newbies and vets alike.  You’ve all helped, however briefly, to warm this grumpy middle-aged cynic’s otherwise frigid heart. :P
