I've been contemplating this for almost half a year now. I recently moved back to Android from Apple and first I thought I'll just get another wireless set of earbuds. The more I thought about it though my mind has gone more towards maybe doing a portable DAC + a pair of really nice sounding wired buds.

The absolute max I think I can spend on the buds themselves are around $300. I can be flexible but I am not looking in the Sennheiser 600 ballpark haha.

So if you have any recommendations, experiences or just have some tips to what to look out for please share them with me!

My first 'real' headphones were MDR6s/V600s from Sony, maybe 20 years ago. I was DJing so went for closed back, and to me open headphones just seemed dumb. 90% of the time I was listening to music in public, going places, so I always went for maximum isolation.

I ended up with some Etymotic ER-4s, with the triple cone silicon tips. When wireless came around I got the Dash in-ears, and used triple flange silicon tips there too, so again, total isolation.

At home I used Sennheiser Amperior, also very closed.

Recently I felt the need for something very light but wanted to easily pop them on and off, so grabbed some PX-100-IIs, and holy shit.

The audio is fantastic, soundstage is so huge, and at the same time, being able to hear everything through them is great. I can have music on super-low and hear everything that's going on around me.

When I got the Dash, it was amazing to be able to turn on the microphone and hear the audio around you, but also have music on. It felt like AR for the ears. I had no idea that nice, light, open backed hps did the same thing already.

Hey, it's not a headphones sub if there's no Koss-post. And since it's the brand that brought the first stereo headphones to the world. Why not start with that.

These are mine, had several. Usually broke the cable, sometimes used the life-long warranty to get free parts.

As i got more interested in headphones, the portapro wasn't quite good enough for in-door listening as it used to be. So i made "wireless" mod so i could have something decent while running.

They are perfect, the tuning actually works better outside.

  • The mod was "designed" so that nothing was broken to archieve it. The cable is intact.

  • The BT-adapter is switchable, i have another one for instant full battery.

  • Adapter is in a weird angle to keep the if off my head. Found out fast how the head blocks signal and in wide spaces the audio would hiccup.

  • Headband has an adjustable locking mod, keeps from eating hairs.
