What is Inktober?

Inktober is an annual month-long event when a prompt word will be posted for each day of October.

What is Inktober 52?

Inktober 52 is what happens during the months that aren't October. A new prompt will be posted once a week (typically Thursdays.)

How do I join in?

Simply draw by hand something based on or inspired by the prompt word. It can be inked traditionally (on paper,) or with a digital "ink" brush. The drawing can be anything from a simple doodle to an elaborate illustration. The color of the ink is negotiable.

Rules

  1. Be kind. Constructive criticism at most, if requested. We welcome artists of all skill levels and varying levels of free time to commit. This community is meant to encourage people to create art.

  2. No AI-Generated work The marks in your work must be physically drawn by (your) hand.

  3. Submissions must meet the theme of this community Your work must be based on the given prompt. Late work based on expired prompts are still eligible for submission.

From Inktober.com:
Jake Parker created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.

"This week’s prompt is your excuse to unleash your wonderfully wicked side! Think of all the directions you can go: a classic cape-wearing mastermind with an over-the-top monologue, a misunderstood antihero just trying their best, or a tiny, adorable villain whose evil plan is something like… stealing everyone’s snacks. You can dive into fantasy and create a shadowy sorcerer, design a stylish comic-book nemesis, or sketch a villain who looks terrifying but is actually just having a very dramatic Thursday. Lean into tropes, flip them upside down, or invent something totally unexpected. This prompt is ripe for personality!

Play with silhouettes, sharp angles, expressive eyes, dramatic poses. Villains are all about presence. And don’t forget, Inktober is about getting back to the basics: simple tools, strong ideas, and letting your imagination run the show. You don’t need flashy tricks to create someone deliciously devious. Just your pen, your creativity, and a spark of mischief. So go big, go bold, go dastardly… and have a blast bringing your villain to life!"

"Get ready to dive headfirst into the swamp and stir up something fun, fierce, or downright weird! You can crank up the drama with a gator gliding through murky water, eyes just breaking the surface like a classic thriller scene. Or flip the tone and go playful! Draw a gator wearing boots, strutting through the bayou like it’s a fashion runway, or sipping sweet tea on a front porch. Maybe you want to tap into folklore and legend: imagine a giant, ancient gator as the ruler of the swamp, scarred and wise, guarding secrets beneath tangled roots and hanging moss.

Want to push it even further? Play with perspective, exaggerate those teeth, go heavy on the texture of scales, or keep it loose and cartoony. And remember, Inktober is all about getting back to the basics. ink, paper, simple ideas, bold lines, and showing up. Don’t overthink it. Let your hand move, make mistakes, discover happy accidents, and enjoy the messy magic of creating. Whether your gator is scary, silly, or legendary, just have fun with it and let it snap some life into your art! 🐊"

"It’s all about big energy, bold hearts, and wandering spirits. Sagittarius is the adventurer of the zodiac! The archer aiming high, chasing meaning, truth, and whatever might be glowing just over the next horizon. You could explore centaurs and constellations, fiery arrows and star maps, or capture the feeling of movement, freedom, and curiosity itself. Think open roads, night skies, and that restless spark that always wants to learn more and go farther.

And since today is Thanksgiving, it’s also the perfect moment to pause and appreciate something pretty special: art and creativity. We’re grateful for the way drawing helps us see the world differently, slow down, and connect to ourselves and each other. As you draw this week, remember that Inktober is about getting back to the basics: simple tools, honest lines, and making art for the joy of it. So aim high, stay curious, and let your creativity be something you’re thankful for today and every day."

"This week’s Inktober 52 prompt is GOOSE, and honestly, it’s one of those prompts that can go in delightfully weird, whimsical, or wildly majestic directions, your choice! You could lean into the nostalgia of Mother Goose, letting classic nursery rhymes inspire soft, storybook-style illustrations. Or go full comedy with the classic silly goose, stumbling, honking, stealing snacks, wearing a hat it absolutely did not ask permission for… embrace the chaos! And we can’t forget the mighty Canadian goose, a creature capable of both elegant migration scenes and absolute park-dominance energy.

Whatever direction you choose, remember that Inktober is all about getting back to the basics. Simple lines, strong ideas, and letting your creativity flow without overthinking it. So grab your pen, loosen up, and let this goose prompt waddle, flap, or charge your imagination wherever it wants to go!"

"This week, think of SNEAKER as a little invitation to slow down and just enjoy making something. Grab whatever traditional tools you love, a simple pen, a favorite sketchbook, that inkwell you only pull out when you’re feeling fancy, or even that beat-up pencil you’ve had since forever. There’s something grounding about putting real ink on real paper, especially in the fall when everything feels a little nostalgic anyway.

Let SNEAKER take you wherever your memories or imagination want to go: the shoes you wore out as a kid, the pair you always wanted, a magical sneaker running through crunchy leaves, or just a quiet, cozy sketch that feels good to make.

No pressure. No rules. Just you, your tools, and a little creative moment in the middle of your week.

Use the hashtag #Inktober52SNEAKER so we can all cheer each other on. But most of all, enjoy the time slowing down and being creative.

Stay warm, stay inspired, stay inky!"

"We are still doing Inktober52! A creative challenge that keeps the ink flowing all year long. Each week, there’s one new prompt to inspire you to keep drawing, painting, or creating in whatever way you love most. It’s a slower pace, but the same creative spark, perfect for keeping your artistic momentum going strong.

And speaking of sparks… the Inktober52 prompt of the week is: SCORPIO

Let that inspire something bold, mysterious, or maybe even a little intense, whatever “Scorpio” means to you. Share your work using #Inktober52Scorpio and connect with others who are keeping the creative energy alive week after week.

You’ve already proven what you can do in 31 days. Now let’s see what you can do in 52 weeks.

Stay inky, The Inktober Team🖤"

@ink@sh.itjust.works : I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to leave a comment on almost all of the submissions and for always finding something positive in the pictures. That's really encouraging. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your art here in the last month and special thanks to @ink@sh.itjust.works for organising the whole thing!

I always enjoy anthologies, where you can see the different interpretations of various people or in contrast similar thought patterns as seen with the Deal day. I'm looking forward to next year!

This is it! Day 31!

Thank you to everyone that's participated and made Inktober 2025 such a memorable event! You all deserve an award! :)

Extra accolades go to those who've navigated the grind and successfully submitted art for all 31 daily prompts! That's not an easy feat, to which those of us have yet to hit 31 submissions may attest. However, if you've participated in this Inktober and have interacted with our little community at all, whether that be posting a sketch or leaving a kind comment, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and hope to see you continue to interact and grow with us here on /c/Inktober.

If you've enjoyed being a part of this daily month-long main event and would like to continue being a part of this community in some capacity, we also host "Inktober 52." where we post a prompt for each week of the year in-between October events. Whether you post weekly, semi-weekly, or just simply browse what others have submitted and leave a comment or two, we look forward to your contribution.

That said, it's the last day of October, so whether you celebrate Halloween or not in your part of the world, we hope you commemorate the last day of our event by kicking back with a treat or two, and pampering yourself with the grace and kindness you deserve. :)

So that's it! As always, you’re free to create a separate post for your own stuff if you wish, or you can post it as a comment below (though I'd advise creating a separate post to maximize visibility.) We will corral any individual posts and post them here as a comment when possible. Rinse and repeat.

Rules:

  1. Please remember to be kind. All skill levels are welcome here.
  2. AI art is not allowed.
  3. Submissions must be based on the daily prompt, but either traditional or digital mediums are welcome.

Thank you in advance, and let’s continue to have fun! :)

I did it! Thanks everyone for the encouragement along the way. Especially to ink@sh.itjust.works our host, for being both incredibly talented and unfailingly generous with feedback.

Turns out this required much more space (or a smaller pen) but oh well.
