I don't know a good way to explain this, but let's try.

Imagine that these icons...

...are all Google Chrome, but three different profiles. That is what I want.

What happens, whether creating .desktop files by hand or using kmenuedit is this:

  • the launcher will respect the unique icons I choose
  • I can force Chrome not to group the icons
  • The panel icons still all show the default Chrome icon...

...instead of using the icon I chose for each instance.

The reason, for the interested, is that I want to have a work profile, a non-profit profile and a personal profile which all open and can be pinned with a unique icon.

I've gotten far enough that having separate menu entries with unique icons and individual .desktop files and ungrouped panel icons seems like progress, but Plasma seems to treat any instance that points at the final binary as "the same."

VPN Notifier (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 years ago by ja2@lemmy.world to c/kde@lemmy.ml

My workplace has a VPN that I need to connect occasionally, but normally do not. I want to set up a prominent, unignorable status notifier so when I am connected to it, I am highly aware and have to disconnect to make the status clear.

Originally I thought maybe I'd like to find a way to query the status of tun0 and turn my main panel #FF0000, but I am having a hard time finding information on how to change panel color programatically. My other idea was assigning a hotkey to open a terminal window with a profile that has a red background and executes a shell script to run the VPN connect script in the foreground, but that feel super hacky and I'd love something cleaner.

Any ideas?

You can now test version 6 of KDEs Plasma Desktop by using the unstable edition of KDE Neon. Not all distributions offer an easy way of installing Plasma 6, for now (for good reasons, too).

I only know of one other distribution, that offers an easy way of testing a Plasma 6 version: KaOS: https://kaosx.us/news/2023/kaos04/ (Feel free to add comments to other distributions or e.g. wiki pages with easy installation instructions).

Be aware that in any of the above versions, there will very likely be lots of (smaller and bigger) bugs, as this isn't even considered an Alpha-Release, yet, and still heavily in development.

Hi guys! So I use KDE Neon on most of my computers, and I'm overall very happy with it. However, I have a search problem on the start menu that really drives me nuts whenever it happens. Say I hit the menu key to open the launcher menu, and start typing to launch the app I'm looking for. For example, if I want to open Kcalc, I start typing "calc" and it correctly identifies it (I think based on description) as my first result. However as I drive my finger to hit ENTER and launch the app, the result selected jumps from the first result to some result in the middle of the list, about the 5th or so. This happens in a fraction of a second right before I hit enter, after holding for a full second on the correct result, and ends up launching a completely unrelated spreadsheet, that has "calculation" on the title. But it's the fifth result.

I always thought maybe this happened because maybe the mouse was hovering in the wrong place and it was overly sensitive to mouse position instead of search results? But nah, I noticed that sometimes the mouse can be on a different monitor altogether, and IT STILL JUMPS AWAY on the results search. Any idea what causes this? It's super frustrating to search something, get the correct result, and then open the wrong app.

This happens only on my notebook (desktop is ok), I just cannot click to take a color, since the icon seems "unfocused".

Bonus point if you can tell me why my (minimized) Firefox window border is bad; I already have GTK apps on breeze in settings.

[SOLVED] Wow, after long time I solved this enigma, it was pretty simple: without compositor enabled this stuff do not work properly.

KDE Itinerary gained the option to share locations via the Matrix protocol, so making sure NeoChat can actually properly handle this as well.

Hello! I'm trying to realize some CSS customizations for some websites (Lemmy, Whatsapp, Startpage) in the style of the breeze theme (dark). I'd like to make it more universal by considering the accent color. and now my question... how do I obtain all the nice colors derived from the accent color, like for instance the highlight color of Dolphin files? there are many different shades of the accent color, but I don't know how to obtain it programmatically from css

sorry if it's a stuipid question but I'm taking the first steps in the CSS language.

thanks in advance!

Vulkan brings some advantages like async compute, better defined behavior and in general more control over the specifics of what's happening. This is a rough plan on how to get there, and how to do it in steps, without having one giant merge request

I daily drive Plasma Mobile on my PinePhone Pro and I enjoy it. Phosh is generally more popular choice for a Linux phone because it is more stable. But the latest version of Plasma Mobile works well and I like its UX more.

Hopefully this is the right community to ask this question in.

I have been tasked with providing a way for a small team to send and receive text messages via a real mobile phone from their computers. Having daily driven Fedora since 2017, my first thought was KDE Connect SMS. Unfortunately, I have to be able to support Windows in this endeavour.

As such, I have three questions:

  • KDE connect is available for Windows, however as far as I can figure kpeoplevcard is not. Am I mistaken? Is there a way to get contact names syncing successfully in a Windows environment, even just one-way?
  • Despite the notification permission being granted on Android, incoming text messages produce no notification on Windows. I have read this may be a fault that occurs when the Android client was installed from F-Droid. Is this the case? I haven't made a Google account for this device, so perhaps I need to do that and install the Play Store version.
  • MMS images appear fine in the KDE Connect SMS application, however they are only thumbnail sized and can not be saved as a file or copied. Can they at least be made bigger, if not exported?

I'm worried that KDE Connect may not be the correct choice for this use-case if these issues don't have workarounds. I may have to use Google's Messages for Web, but that doesn't allow concurrent connections from multiple PCs like KDE Connect does - and it will mean I have to deal with Google.

Coming from Windows 10 (I switched 6 months ago), I find the task switcher animation in KDE extremely obnoxious, as I expect it to pop up instantly.

Still, I enjoy the other animations in KDE, so I don't want to turn off all the animations in the global settings.

I searched for a solution but all the relevant posts were on the now defunct KDE subreddit which I cannot view.

Is there any way to turn off just the fade in/fade out animation?

Hi, I've installed a new computer with Debian 12 Bookworm and KDE 5.27.5. I am unable to browse SAMBA shares/servers on the network using this computer.

A different computer also has Bookworm installed (but upgraded from Bullseye), and this computer can browse all shares/computers in the network just fine.

All the computers have firewalld / firewall-config installed (with both mdns and all ws-discovery services enabled to pass through), and all computers are running the wsdd daemon to enable being discovered through ws-discovery.

I've tried to disable the firewall on all the computers, but this made no difference.

This is working on all computers except the one I recently built and installed with bookworm. That computer cannot browse the shares/servers (= other computers in the network), but it CAN reach all them by entering smb://computer_name in the address bar of Dolphin. All computers can also ping all other computers.

What could I be missing here? Thanks.
