I'm not sure if it is entirely accurate to compare them in this way, as "Matrix" refers to simply the protocol, whereas "Signal" could refer to the applications, server, and protocol. That being said, is there any fundamental difference in how the Matrix ecosystem of federated servers, and independently developed applications compares to that of Signal that would make it less secure, overall, to use?

The most obvious security vulnerability that I can think of is that the person you are communicating with (or, conceivably, oneself, as well) is using an insecure/compromised application that may be leaking information. I would assume that the underlying encryption of the data is rather trustworthy, and the added censorship resistance of federating the servers is a big plus. However, I do wonder if there are any issues with extra metadata generation, or usage tracking that could be seen as an opsec vulnerability for an individual. Signal, somewhat famously, when subpoenaed to hand over data, can only hand over the date that the account was created, and the last time it was used. What would happen if the authorities go after a Matrix user? What information about that user would they be able to gather?

Hi all,

I want to host my own matrix server, so that i can run bridges to all the other (stupid) messaging apps.

I am looking for any advice or experience in choosing which server to run, and if you know of any good tutorials, run throughs, etc. i typically would like a lighter instance, as i expect about 3 users, with 2 of us needing bridging.

  • dendrite
  • synapse
  • conduit
  • construct

and then the addition of bridges, (Signal, WA, Messenger and hopefully SMS).

I am fairly self sufficient when it comes to self hosting, and i run everything on linux, in docker, proxied by Nginx proxy manager. but typically prefer stuff that works more or less out of the box.

Thanks all!

I see that in the blog post regarding Element Call, they say that Element Call is fully implemented using Matrix:

What’s more, Element Call is built entirely on Matrix: it doesn’t need any additional servers to get going. You can run it against your existing Matrix homeserver to provide complete self-sovereignty… while still being able to talk to anyone else anywhere on the wider Matrix network!

Does this mean that group voice, and video calls will work on other Matrix clients? Element seems to have the ability to create something called a "Video Room" which seems to match what discord does with the pop-in/pop-out voice-chat room; however, if I look at that room in another client like Nheko, it does not appear to have the functionality. Is that simply because they have yet to implement it themselves, or is it that the feature is unique to element, and, as a result, will not work with any other client? If so, is Matrix going to implement it so that it can be mirrored across other clients?

I have been trying to figure out a way that my son can have a messaging account, that doesn't track him and that we can limit who he has access to and who has access to him.

What are you thoughts on matrix for kids?

Are there any features available for that sort of control? I really only want him to be able to contact his family (and also indoctrinate him into matrix and open source young 😉)

Is there a way to connect Matrix to MS Teams? And for bonus points, Zoom's messaging system?

As the title states I would like to migrate to another server/provider (currently I am on matrix.org). Is that possible, without losing my chat history. I heard, that there is a tool, that invites your new account to all chats. But wouldn't that make my "person" chats to group chats?

I only made my account yesterday, so I went to try out the Android apps. I know Element is the official one, but I was curious about the alternatives.

Apparently Fluffy supports multiple accounts - which I'd honestly expect to be a basic feature - and also appears to be more lightweight.

Schildi is apparently a fork of Element and I like its look the most. I'm so sick of Google's rounded rectangles, that I jump on every opportunity to use an app that doesn't have that "design language".

When testing, I ran into two problems with Fluffy: notifications don't seem to work at all (which is ironic, because I finally registered with Matrix because Discord completely stopped doing notifications for me), and I couldn't figure out how to reinitialize verification. Also, my first attempt to register an acct was with this client, and it couldn't show a captcha.

On the other hand, I can copy my username into clipboard easily, which is such an important thing that messengers keep forgetting to include.

Schildi seems to work reliably, buuut I guess it can only receive notification through a resident notification and a service that takes up 200 megs of memory? That's really not good for my old low end phone. ~~Maybe the F-Droid version is omitting GMS integration since it looks like there's a settings selection missing...?~~

(Ed: Of course, I forgot that F-Droid won't host GMS, and Google mandates a permanent notification if one doesn't use GMS. Lack of sleep, lack of memory.)

Guess I'll be trying the default app after all.

Anyone has time to troubleshoot stuff that I might need to figure out? Gotta admit this is a tad more confusing at times than what I expected.

Ed ed: ok I have ntfy now and am satisfied. Met a lot of cool and helpful people in support rooms of these clients. I think I'm liking this Matrix thing.

Wanting to be more secure and switch most of my chats to a matrix messaging service, buy I have some older contacts I don't think I can get on board. I know SMSMatrix is a bridge, but looking for any alternatives, preferably a built in option for the app.

If it doesn't exist, good to know also.

If I accidentally leaked my Matrix recovery key (which I assume that's what the long string of spaced out random letters is called?), is it possible to reset it such that the previous key can no longer be used to decrypt the messages?

I wish I could recommend matrix to people, but I consider the current available clients way too user-unfriendly. Element’s UI/UX is really confusing for non-techie, even techie. Its settings are way too bloated. A lot of other clients have the same problems.

I have been using Element X on TestFlight, and it fixes most of the things I hated for the previous version. It looks awesome with SwiftUI. It’s still missing some basic features but I'm sure they will add it later. I hope they release it soon, and recommend it to everyone.

Voice channels similar to discord and Teamspeak, where you don't need to "call" the people you want to talk to, you just join the channel. Is this a feature in Matrix?

Thanks.

I've been on Matrix for a few weeks now and like it quite a bit, but I'd like to join another homeserver to aid in the decentralization movement. Are there any trustworthy ones the people of Lemmy know of?

Edit: After looking, the only ones I found that were "recommended" are weird lolicon servers, or aren't federated with ANY of the rooms and spaces I want to be in. Why is the home server situation this bad??? Is Matrix's federation system different/worse or something? This is making very little sense to me.

Hi, I have no IPv4 from my ISP, so I host everything through Cloudflare Tunnel. I recently tried matrix-docker-ansible-deploy and got it to work, but I couldn’t get calling and federation to work over Tunnel. Is there any way to do this?

Hello! I'm looking into creating a Matrix account, but I'm not sure where to register it. Does anybody have any recommendations of stable, reliable Matrix instances? I suppose I could use matrix.org, but I figured I'd support decentralisation by joining some other instance. Thanks

Been having issues with folks logging out...then unable to decrypt after signing in again. Even tho they use their passkey, prior messages will not decrypt as they were not logged in anywhere.

So trying to understand some use-cases:

  • If someone is only logged-in on their phone, go somewhere without a signal (e.g., plane, hiking), and then get signal again...will they be able to decrypt messages sent while they were offline (but never chose to sign-out)?
  • If NO....will they be able to decrypt prior messages they had been able to decrypt (i.e., just not the ones sent while offline)?
  • If they lose their phone (again, only source of logging in)...will they be able to backfill messages when setting up a new device with their passkey?

Sorry for the perhaps basic E2EE questions....getting traction with my family using Matrix, but worried about some spouse-acceptance concerns.

I have being searching for Matrix rooms that are tech-related and which have great communities. Does anyone know about one that would fit those requirements?
