While Sony gave the film a promotional push in recent weeks, it seems the film’s dreadful reviews – including a one-star pan from The Independent, who called it “abysmal” – affected cinemagoers’ desire to watch it: Kraven the Hunter had the worst opening weekend of any Sony-produced Marvel film.

The film pulled in just $11m (£8.7m) in the US and $15m (£11.8m) globally, earning it overall takings of $26m (£20.5m) – an even more meagre amount when considering it cost between $110-$150m (£86.9m-£118.5m). As of 22 December, the film had made just $30.2m (£24m).

These global takings sit behind the equally-as-maligned Morbius, starring Jared Leto, which took $39m. Madame Web was another Spider-Man spin-off released by Sony and, while despised by the critics, it amassed half of its budget back in the opening weekend alone, with takings of $49.1m.

Sony did enjoy big success with the Venom franchise, which became a sleeper hit when it launched in 2018.

The first Venom made $856.1m (£676.2m) with 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage amassing $506.8m (£400.3m).

Meanwhile, the third and final entry in the series, Venom: The Last Dance, has made $475.5m (£375.6m) since being released earlier this year. At the time of writing, this makes it the ninth highest-grossing film of the year.

The report outlined that the fallout is due to differences over the creative direction of the franchise, with Amazon reportedly in favour of “Marvel-style” ideas to expand the franchise, such as spinoff shows and films.

Broccoli is reported to have baulked at the pitch, telling friends that Amazon are “fucking idiots” who are taking the franchise “hostage”. She has reportedly expressed her disinterest in continuing to work with Amazon for any Bond films. NME has reached out to Amazon MGM Studios for comment.

More than 76 percent of Americans between ages 12 and 74 saw at least one movie in a cinema this year, while 85 percent plan to go as often or more often in 2025, according to a new report.

Highlights of the report include the fact that 85% of moviegoers plan to go to the movies in 2025 as often or more often than they did in 2024. Similarly, 72% of those surveyed across 14 countries said they’re going to cinemas “more” or “the same” as six months ago. 76% of Americans 12-74 saw at least one movie in a theater this year, with loyalty programs seeing a 12% jump in new subscriptions from 2023 to 2024.

Gen Z moviegoers are the most active of any group, with 90% of females and 89% of males going to at least one movie a year, according to NRG — though males listed movies as their No. 2 favorite activity, behind video games.

Meanwhile, the report points out that Hispanic moviegoers continue to be strong supporters of moviegoing, and are 11% more likely to see prefer seeing a movie on opening weekend than the general moviegoing population. 27% of Hispanic moviegoers attend six movies a year or more.

NATO also projects that next year will see more movies released in 2,000 locations or more in the U.S., going from approximately 95 in 2024 to 110 in 2025. And many of them will be seen on bigger screens, with 37% more large format screens around the world than five years ago.
